Chapter 346: Uncle Shields Peeking at My Mom

Anne Sutton watched his back, then her gaze fell to the door he’d meant to close, but hadn’t.

He’d left it cracked open just a sliver...

She sat on the sofa, feeling a little upset for some reason.

...

Still, Anne Sutton got up, walked over to shut the door, and went to bed.

A while later, lying in bed and unable to fall asleep, she opened her eyes. A thought struck her—Ian. ’Nathan Fawcett wouldn’t have taken Ian, would he?’

At that thought, Anne Sutton quickly scrambled out of bed.

She went out the door and into Ian’s room. Seeing him sleeping soundly in his bed, she breathed a sigh of relief.

She wasn’t afraid of anything else right now, only that this man would do something crazy and take her son away from her.

Instead of going back to her room, Anne Sutton decided to just stay in Ian’s and sleep beside her son.

...

In the morning, Caleb Summers got out of bed and poured himself a glass of water. He took a sip, feeling a bit more awake, and walked out to find Nathan Fawcett sitting on his living room sofa.

Caleb Summers jumped in surprise when he saw him. "What are you doing here? When did you arrive?"

"Last night."

"..." Caleb Summers said, "Weren’t you going next door? What are you doing at my place?"

He was just sitting there, silent and morose. It had nearly scared him to death.

Nathan Fawcett looked at Caleb Summers and asked, "Is it really that stupid for me to be with Anne Sutton?"

"..." Hearing this, Caleb Summers was confused. "No! She’s a great person."

"Then why don’t you want me to be with her?"

"..." Caleb Summers looked at Nathan Fawcett and said, "No one is stopping you from being with her. You’re overthinking things! I just hope that while you’re with her, you can also manage your relationship with your mother. Don’t disappoint her, and don’t alienate everyone else because of Anne. That’s what Anne Sutton wants, too."

"..." Nathan Fawcett said, "My mother doesn’t want me with her. She wants us to break up. So, I should just do as I’m told?"

"..." Caleb Summers said, "If you really can’t be together, then just break up. What is love, anyway? It’s just a story people made up to fool themselves! Who would give up money for a woman? You’re not that stupid, are you? We call people like that love-addled! This is a simple truth that even Anne Sutton understands. How can you not?"

"..." Nathan Fawcett fell silent, not saying a word.

Caleb Summers looked at him and said, "Nathan, I know you’ve been miserable lately, and it’s because of her. You take it out on me at the office every day, and I’ve put up with it. But... I’ll say it again: if being with her doesn’t negatively impact your life, I won’t say a thing. But I won’t agree to you giving up the company for her. I hope you’ll think about this carefully! And I hope you don’t make a decision you’ll regret. Don’t ruin your entire life over a moment of impulse."

Nathan Fawcett said, "What I hate most is when people claim they’re doing something ’for my own good’ while trying to make me do things I don’t want to do."

’Especially when it came to Anne Sutton. He clearly wanted to be with her, yet everyone was so opposed to it.’

’What Nathan Fawcett hadn’t expected was that even Anne Sutton herself was against it.’

Caleb Summers knew that discussing this topic with him was pointless, so he dropped it. "Are you planning on staying here all day? Not going next door?"

Caleb Summers was rather exasperated to see him just sitting there.

’And here he was, hoping to go next door and bum a meal!’

Hearing this, Nathan Fawcett glanced at him. "What, is there a problem with me staying here?"

Caleb Summers said, "It’s fine. Did you get any sleep? Want to go lie down for a bit?"

Noticing Nathan Fawcett was still in yesterday’s clothes, he asked, "You didn’t sleep all night, did you?"

Nathan Fawcett didn’t answer.

Caleb Summers didn’t push it.

He went to go work out.

That morning, Anne Sutton was woken up by Mrs. Sutton, who said, "Why were you sleeping with Ian? I was wondering where you’d gone."

Anne Sutton rubbed her eyes. "You’re up so early?"

"It’s not that early," Mrs. Sutton said. "I’m heading to the shop. I think I’ll drive myself today!"

Anne Sutton had been practicing with her for a few days, so she was used to it now.

Anne Sutton said, "Alright, be careful on the road then."

"Mm-hm."

Once her mother left, Anne Sutton couldn’t get back to sleep.

She got up, saw that Ian was awake, and dressed him. Then she went downstairs to make breakfast.

Before long, Justin Shields arrived.

He walked in, looked at Anne Sutton, and said, "Morning."

Anne Sutton watched the man, who she thought was at a hotel, walk in. "What are you doing here?" she asked.

Justin Shields said, "I drank too much last night. Did you take me to the hotel?"

Anne Sutton replied, "My mom was worried something might happen if you stayed at the shop, so she had you taken to a hotel."

"Thank you," Justin Shields said politely.

Anne Sutton stood in the kitchen, busying herself with her tasks.

Justin Shields stood to the side, watching her.

Anne Sutton was very focused when she cooked, and her profile was exquisite.

Ian, standing to the side, looked at Justin Shields and said, "You’re staring at my mom."

Justin Shields: "..."

He glanced at the little guy. Feeling a bit awkward at being caught, he said, "Your mom is very pretty."

"I think so too." Ian glanced at Anne Sutton and nodded in agreement.

Anne Sutton glanced at the two ’men’ and said, "Ian, go wash your hands. It’s time to eat."

Ian said, "Okay."

Justin Shields followed him to wash his hands as well.

After they came out from washing their hands, Ian picked up his phone watch and called Nathan Fawcett.

Nathan Fawcett was still over at Caleb Summers’ place. He was lying on the bed, just about to get some sleep, when his phone rang. It was a call from Ian. "Dad."

Nathan Fawcett asked, "What’s up?"

Ian whispered, "Do you want to come over and eat? Mom made yummy food."

"No." Nathan Fawcett had no desire to see Anne Sutton.

’She doesn’t like me anyway!’

Just thinking about their argument last night soured his mood.

Ian said, "Uncle Shields is here."

Hearing this, Nathan Fawcett froze. His mind instantly cleared. "What’s he doing there again?"

"He was just staring at my mom and said she’s pretty."

"..." Nathan Fawcett immediately shot out of bed and headed for the door.

Caleb Summers, who had just finished his shower, saw Nathan Fawcett coming downstairs and asked, "Aren’t you going to sleep?"

Nathan Fawcett said, "I’m going next door for a meal."

He walked out the door.

Caleb Summers watched this unfold, quickly towel-dried his hair, and followed him out.

In the dining room, Anne Sutton, Ian, and Justin Shields were just about to eat.

Justin Shields looked at Anne Sutton and said, "I never would have guessed you’re such a good cook."

"It’s been a long time since I’ve cooked," Anne Sutton said, glancing at him. "Try some. Is it any good?"

’It seemed Justin Shields had never really tried her cooking before.’

Justin Shields picked up his chopsticks. He had just taken a bite and hadn’t yet said a word when Nathan Fawcett walked in.

Ian saw him and called out, "Dad."

Justin Shields saw him too. "Huh? Ethan Linden, what brings you here?"

Nathan Fawcett shot him a look. "You’re in my house, asking me what I’m doing here?"

’Good thing I was right next door,’ he thought. ’Otherwise, this devious man might have actually succeeded!’
