Chapter 209: Chapter 209

Dron quickly got the new recruits in order.

Aliq and Crilium took the lead in making sure the soldiers knew the rules of the settlement.

It actually was going much smoother than Dron had anticipated.

He thought there would be some push back. Thought there would be at least one or two in the massive newcomers who would try to challenge Dron for their place as the leader.

It didn’t happen.

They were all content to just follow along with Dron because he had killed the strongest of them all. There was no real loyalty but as long as everyone stayed in their lane, it wouldn’t be so bad.

The problem once again was they would have to clean up the massive mess that the newcomers made.

Dron looked around for Tempest. He wanted to make sure that she was okay.

He was surprised when she was fighting but didn’t have the time to swell on it, now that the danger was over he could really think back on all that she was doing. He didn’t know what Rynax had taught her but she was able to handle herself well. The most impressive part wasn’t the fact that she could take life but the fact that she was willing to put herself in danger just to perserve life.

She tried to protect as many people as she could.

It was more than just impressive to Dron, it was a major turn on.

Before all of this started, Tempest had just started her heat. He was sure the adrenaline of all that had happened must have been enough to dampen the affects but that wouldn’t last for very long.

Dron had to find his woman and quickly.

"Everywhere you turn there’s someone there to follow your lead." Rynax spoke from next to him.

Dron hadn’t even realized that he had walked up on him.

"Yeah, seems like it. Have you seen Tempest?" Dron questioned.

"She walked off with Mexyn to help out with relief."

"Oh, thanks." Dron tried to walk off. He never really had much to say to Rynax.

"What is it about you that draws people to you like that?" Rynax questioned.

Dron turned waiting for the sarcasm or the snide comment. Rynax was always good for one of those but it never came.

He was genuinely trying to connect with Dron. With the knowledge that Temepst was safe he could spare a few minutes to talk with the man that had help keep her that way while Dron was off on the start of his mission.

"I wish I could tell you. I spent most of my life believing that no one would ever want to follow me and now it seems I can’t get anyone else to take the lead even if I wanted to."

"So, a lack of self confidence then. No, it would never work." Rynax sighed and ran one of his hands through his hair.

"It’s not that I lack self confidence, at least that’s not what it is anymore, it’s just that I know that I don’t know everything. I’m figuring this out right along with everyone else."

"Sounds like a lot of pressure."

"It is but it’s worth it."

"Especially when it means you get to have a mate like Tempest." Rynax muttered and looked away.

Dron tilted his head and realized that maybe now was the best time to figure out exactly what else happened while Tempest was on her journey. Maybe Rynax knew something that Tempest hadn’t told him.

"Come, let us relax for a bit."

"Relax? I didn’t know you knew how to do that."

Dron chuckled, "Tempest said something similar."

Rynax followed behind Dron as they walked off into a small clearing. There were no bodies there. At least none that Dron could see.

Dron found a small boulder for him to sit on while Rynax leaned up against a larger one.

"Do you think we really have a chance?" Rynax asked.

"Against the high royals you mean?"

"Yeah, not just that though. To be happy? I mean do any of us really have a chance to be happy in this life?"

"Yes, we do. I would have never thought it possible but even with all the obstacles Tempest still makes me happy. As long as she’s with me, there’s nothing more that I could want."

Rynax groaned and shook his head, "Yeah, so she says."

"I’m glad she told someone that. For a while, I was worried that I would lose her."

"Why?"

"There was a few days when I wasn’t able to reach her. Something must have been going on with the communication system.

It was just by chance that Dron looked up at Rynax when he said that.

Just by chance that he saw the fleeting looking on the alpha’s face as he basically forced himself not to meet Dron’s gaze.

"Did she tell you anything about that?"

"She didn’t have to." Rynax admitted in a low voice.

"What are you talking about? Why?"

Rynax sighed and pushed a hand through his hair once again, "Look I know you’re going to blow this way out of proportion, but I just want to remind you that everything is fine now. You and Tempest are together and safe. No harm done."

Dron’s hands slowly balled into fists. He didn’t know what Rynax was about to say but he knew that whatever it was he wasn’t going to like it.

"What are you talking about. Speak plainly Rynax." Dron spoke through a clenched jaw.

"Fine." He sighed hard and stood up straight before he continued talking, "At the start of the journey, I was the one who instituted a block to all of our wrist devices to make it so communications couldn’t get in or out."

Dron blinked a few times before his eyes nearly popped out of his head. "You did what!" He roared and lurched to his feet, ready to rush Rynax.

Rynax dashed to the side, his hands up in surrender.

"I didn’t mean any harm. I was ... confused." Rynax offered an explanation.

"You better get unconfused real fast and explain to me what you could have possibly gained from putting not just yourself but the entire party in danger by doing that."

"I wanted to buy some time." Rynax admitted.

"Time for what?"

"Time to find out if the blessing was unique to you or if I could be blessed as well."

Dron gaped for a second. Rynax did this because he wanted a shot at Temepst.

Dron felt completely foolish for having trusted him at all. He knew there was a possibility that Rynax would try to convince Tempest to be with him, but to go to that extent.

"Like I said, I was confused. Can you really blame me for being envious? I may never find what you have, if there was a chance that I could change my fortune by just putting a little space between the two of you, I had to try."

Dron wanted to get more angry. He wanted to push his fist through Dron’s face. He couldn’t. He knew what it felt like to be on the outside of a blessing he so desperately wanted.

"What did she do when she found out the truth?" Dron questioned.

Rynax’s eyebrows shot up. Seems like he was expecting Dron to attack as well.

"She was incredibly angry. She yelled and didn’t talk to me for a while. She avoided me at all costs. I think that was the worst part of it. I’d gone from a close friend to little more than her enemy. It wasn’t worth it. She told me in no short terms that she wasn’t interested in me that way."

"Do you think she was lying?" Dron asked.

"I wish she was."

Dron understood the longing. Even when Dron tried to convince himself that he didn’t want to be with anyone, the longing was still there.

"I can’t say that I approve of your methods, but I do understand."

"Really?" Rynax questioned.

"Yes. Now that I know what love feels like, I can understand anyone wanting that for themselves." Dron shrugged a shoulder. He was going to have to talk to Tempest about keeping this bit of information from him, but that would come at a different time.

Rynax leaned up against the large stone again, clearly feeling less threatened than before.

"It doesn’t make a difference anyway, it’s not like I’m going to find any other omega who would be willing to try with me."

"You never know. We are in a new time. There are so many new omegas. You may find..."

Rynax cut him off, scoffing at Dron’s words, "You can’t possibly mean the human women. There’s no way. The ones that I’ve been around are all so...annoying."

"Annoying? I didn’t get that from them. Intense. Scared. Yes. Not annoying."

Rynax rolled his eyes, "then you obviously haven’t spent any time with the one they call Minnie. She swears she’s always right. And competitive...ugh. Not to mention, she takes so long to groom herself."

Dron laughed but masked it with a cough into his hand. "You were watching her groom herself?"

"Yeah, she has that long hair, it looks like black waves in a fast moving river. It sort of shimmers in the sun. She brushes it over and over before she ties it back up into the long braid. Honestly, how someone could be so vain is beyond me."

Dron’s jaw nearly dropped. The man with a full fortune of jewelry on his person was complaining about someone else being vain?

What in the world was happening?

Dron continued to look at Rynax as he went on and on about how much he couldn’t stand Minnie. Finally, when Rynax let him get a word in, Dron could only ask one thing.

"Have you ever thought that maybe your aversion to Minnie is something else? You do seem incredibly preoccupied with her."

Rynax furrowed his brow, looked back up at Dron.

"No, not a chance. I’d rather rip my own skin off than be with her."

Dron simply nodded.

He’d had that feeling before.

The day they told him he was to marry Tempest.
