Malicious Compliance: The Necromancer Who Hated His Script [LitRPG / Progression Fantasy / Satire / Comedy / Villain / Revenge]
Chapter 45: Corporate Mergers, Misunderstandings, and the Paladin of Cringe
Mordecai's office of Ravenloft Holdings—now formerly known as the Blood Throne Room—was now a triumph of executive minimalism.
The ominous throne of skulls you usually see in edgy manga had been swapped out for an ergonomic memory-foam chair (kindly offered by the System), and the oppressive torches were replaced by cold-light mana spheres, optimized for reading contracts and preventing digital eye strain.
Mordecai sat behind his massive ebony desk, massaging his temples aggressively.
The day had just begun, and it was utterly exhausting. Between the System actively trying to force a romantic side-quest with Jeanette, managing the grievances of the newly unionized goblin workforce, and dealing with constant notifications about Nick tanking his own global approval ratings, Mordecai’s stress meter was redlining.
The heavy oak door slid open with a soft, magical hum.
Cassandra stepped in. The Iron Banshee, usually the very epitome of mechanical coldness and ruthless efficiency, seemed strangely... glitchy.
Her formal secretary uniform was immaculate, her glasses perfectly aligned on the bridge of her nose, but there was an unmistakable, pulsing neon-blue glow dusting her pale cheeks. Her internal cooling system was emitting a high-pitched whir, sounding suspiciously like a breathless sigh.
The "Private Meeting."
The moment Mordecai had uttered those words over the intercom, Cassandra’s logic processor had completely shattered. The residual effects of the [Edgelord Rizz - Ultra Admin Edition] were still corrupting her base protocols.
The Banshee had spent the last few minutes walking with him, with her brain running probability calculations. 'The Hero is approaching. The "Main Heroine" (the Saint) is compromised. The Childhood Friend (Jeanette) rejected the intimate event. Cassandra’s logical conclusion was singular: The CEO needs to secure the corporate line of succession, and he has chosen me for a closed-door physical merger.' Too many things.
"S-So... what did you want to talk about with me, my Liege?" Cassandra whispered. Her usually metallic voice carried an uncharacteristic, velvety tremor.
She then locked the heavy door behind her while looking on the floor.
Click.
Mordecai didn't notice the click or the neon blush. He didn't even notice the fact that Cassandra had subtly undone the top button of her strictly ironed blouse. He was entirely focused on the holographic map projected across his desk.
"Have a seat, Cassandra," Mordecai grunted, his voice deep and raspy from sheer fatigue. "We need to do this quickly, before night falls. The situation out there is about to get very... physical. And I want to make absolutely sure we are protected from every possible angle."
In that moment, Cassandra's eyes widened, and her body twitched.
[SYSTEM ERROR: CASSANDRA CORE TEMPERATURE +400%]
Cassandra sat down rigidly, crossing her legs tightly. Her ceramic-plated fingers were trembling. 'Physical? Protected from every angle? My God, he isn't even using metaphors. He's so direct. So... dominant.' She thought.
"O-Of course, My Lord," she stammered, adjusting her glasses, which were rapidly fogging up from the ambient heat radiating off her chassis. "I am... I am ready to accommodate any of your directives. If you wish for me to... prepare for system integration—"
"There's no time for standard preparations," Mordecai interrupted, fixing her with that single, glowing purple eye that seemed to pierce right through her soul. "That blonde idiot is about to make his move. I know how he thinks. He's frustrated, he’s been publicly humiliated, and his stats are heavily inflated by his own ego. He’s going to try to penetrate our frontal defenses with brute force. We cannot allow that. I need you to put your signature on this binding agreement with me, right now, before something bad happens."
Mordecai slid a thick parchment document across the polished mahogany, tapping his calloused index finger on the dotted line at the bottom.
Cassandra’s non-existent heart skipped a beat. 'A binding agreement. A merger. A corporate marriage contract! I knew it! But... I'm very inexperienced... I don't know if I'll be able to satisfy him...!' The Iron Banshee snatched the quill, her hand vibrating visibly. She looked up at Mordecai, her glowing blue eyes shining with a devotion that bordered on romantic fanaticism. "My Liege... Kaito... I accept. I will be your partner. I will be your shield and your sword, your companion in the darkness... and the mother of your demonic children."
Mordecai blinked, thoroughly derailed. "Companion in the darkness? Mother? Cassandra, it’s a restraining order. What are you talking about?" He spoke. But, this time, he didn't overreact.
Cassandra froze. The tip of her quill hovered one millimeter above the parchment. "A... restraining order?"
"Yes." Mordecai pinched the bridge of his nose, sighing heavily. "For the village of Renea. And South Oakhaven. Did you even read the header?"
Cassandra looked down. The neon glow on her cheeks instantly shifted from 'lovestruck neon-blue blush' to 'fatal system error blue.'
The document read: [PRIVATE ZONING AMENDMENT AND RESTRAINING ORDER AGAINST ADVENTURER 'NICK'. CAUSE: AGGRAVATED TRESPASSING AND DISTURBING THE PEACE.]
Mordecai leaned back in his ergonomic chair. "Nick isn't going into the dungeons. I sent Larry to scrub them clean, so he won't find anything left to kill. His ego won't be able to handle the lack of an audience. His next logical move, dictated by that pathetic savior complex of his, will be to come directly at us. Judging from the map, he’ll surely step into Renea and other villages, looking to 'liberate' the peasants. And when he does, we’ll sue him."
It took Cassandra’s brain five full seconds to reboot, hastily deleting a temporary folder titled 'Names for our future demon children.'
She snapped her spine perfectly straight, coughing politely and re-buttoning her blouse at the speed of light. "T-The village of Renea, certainly, My Liege. Your logic is impeccable as always. I-I simply thought you were referring to... another form of protection for Fort Blackstone." She said, poking her index fingers together.
"Fort Blackstone is secure. Renea, however, is a soft target," Mordecai explained, completely oblivious to his secretary's catastrophic emotional collapse. "Nick will try to kick down house doors, shout heroic catchphrases, all of that in search of the 'evil'. Standard RPG clichés. I need this restraining order to be legally binding by midnight. Ensure Clause 4-B specifically states that unsheathing the Holy Sword within village limits constitutes the 'Improper use of weapons of mass destruction in a residential area.'"
Cassandra, recovering her usual icy efficiency (albeit flavored with a bitter pinch of disappointment), signed the document with surgical precision. "Executed, CEO. However, Nick is the Hero. His [HEROIC AURA] tends to naturally bypass standard city guards. Who will enforce the law in Renea when he arrives?"
A dark, cold, and purely corporate smile slithered across Mordecai’s face. "We aren't sending guards. We'll do something worse. I’ve already appointed the perfect man as the Leader of Renea." He said. "Open the primary communication channel."
Cassandra nodded. Typing rapidly on a floating, magical keyboard, she activated the communication crystal in the center of the desk.
The crystal hummed, projecting a crisp azure hologram. The figure that materialized was a man in gold-plate armor, so polished and immaculate it looked like plastic. He had gravity-defying, perfectly coiffed blonde and long hair, a blindingly white smile, and a lute strapped across his chest.
It was Sir Galadron the Pure, the Paladin of Light. The second strongest hero the world had ever known, who never wanted to slay monsters.
According to Ugo's audit, Sir Galadron always wanted to be a bard, but the world forced him into being the strongest hero to defeat Aldmax.
The funniest part? He died of a heart attack during a battle with Ugo.
He was the man whose singing was so atrocious, so deeply, spiritually grating and off-key, that it had driven Rogbal—a Level 80 Dark Lord—to commit suicide by signing a soul-contract with Ugo just so he wouldn't have to listen to it anymore. Mordecai, recognizing the tactical value of weaponized annoyance, had immediately made him Mayor.
Moreover, a hero like Nick would surely know his story.
The moment the hologram stabilized, Galadron threw his arms wide, took a massive breath, and began strumming his lute with violent enthusiasm.
"OHHHHH! THE DARKNESS YIELDS TO LUMINOUS BUREAUCRACYYY! OUR CEO CALLS FROM HIS SPIKY BALCONYYY! MY TAXES ARE PAID, MY HEART IS SINCERE, FOR RAVENLOFT HOLDINGS, I AM THE PREMIER PEER!"
Galadron’s voice was an unholy cross between fingernails on a chalkboard and a cat being stepped on at three in the morning. Cassandra instantly slammed her hands over her audio receptors, her face twisting in pure agony.
"Mute him. Immediately," Mordecai ordered, his eyelid twitching with a violent, stress-induced spasm.
Cassandra slammed a button. Galadron’s hologram continued to sing at the top of his lungs, his eyes squeezed shut in passionate emotion, but the office fell blessedly silent.
"Galadron," Mordecai said, his voice dripping with pure menace as he activated the one-way transmission. "Stop singing and listen to me. This is a corporate Code Red."
The Paladin’s hologram snapped to attention, opening his eyes and offering an exaggerated, theatrical military salute.
"You are expecting visitors very soon," Mordecai continued. "The Hero Nick and his party are heading toward the outer territories. Your job is not to fight him. I repeat: absolute prohibition on lethal force if not strictly necessary for the lives of our villagers. Nick still has the Goddess’ buff, and I refuse to pay the life insurance premiums for your corporate resurrection."
Galadron, still muted, nodded vigorously, slamming a gauntleted fist against his breastplate.
"I want you to use Bureaucratic Inhibition," Mordecai explained, resting his elbows on the desk and steepling his fingers. "When he enters the village, drown him in paperwork. Ask for his entry visa. Demand his permit for the transport of magical armaments. Make him fill out Form 104 for the separated recycling of monster parts. And if he resists... sing him the praises of the Renea Homeowners' Association guidelines. Use your lute. Annihilate his sanity, Galadron. Make him beg the heavens for a monster to fight."
The Paladin's hologram lit up with a pure, terrifying joy. He hoisted his lute into the air like a bloody trophy, ready to unleash sonic hell upon the Hero.
"Good. Cut the feed," Mordecai sighed.
The hologram vanished, leaving the office in quiet peace.
"A cruel maneuver, CEO," Cassandra commented, organizing the files. "Psychological torture via red tape and off-key ballads... Nick possesses no magical resistances against that."
"Nick wants to be the hero of a fairy tale," Kaito replied, looking out the tower window as the night swallowed the darklands. "But this isn't a fairy tale anymore. It’s a market economy. And he just walked into my monopoly."
Suddenly, the entire office was flooded with a blinding, opulent golden light.
It wasn't the holy magic of the Goddess, nor an enemy attack. It was something far, far more powerful. It was a System notification reserved exclusively for Administrators, accompanied by the distinct, heavy CHA-CHING of a cash register processing an obscene amount of gold.
A massive holographic screen, bordered in digital platinum and diamonds, materialized in mid-air above the desk.
[ATTENTION: VIP CONNECTION ESTABLISHED.]
[THE HIGHER REALMS HAVE AUTHORIZED A LIVE INSPECTION.]
[USER: LORD DIBBS57 (TIER 3 PREMIUM SPONSOR) HAS PURCHASED THE 'ALL-ACCESS DUNGEON PASS'.]
Mordecai sat bolt upright, his eyes widening. "A live inspection? From the Gods... I mean, the Viewers?"
An Avatar projected itself from the golden screen. It was a translucent but surprisingly well-dressed figure wearing aristocratic clothing from a bygone era, a spectral monocle wedged into his right eye, a top hat, and holding a bucket of ethereal popcorn.
"Greetings, greetings, greetings!" [Lord Dibbs57] exclaimed, his voice booming through the office in perfect surround sound. "I do hope I’m not interrupting any executive meetings or... ahem, closed-door corporate mergers." (He winked directly at Cassandra, who flushed violently neon and looked at the floor).
"[Lord Dibbs57]," Mordecai said, maintaining his absolute stone-cold CEO poker face, even as he internally cursed the System. "To what do I owe the honor of this premium intrusion into my office? I've read your supporting comments many times, but I never had the chance to say 'Thank you'."
The ghostly nobleman tossed a piece of ethereal popcorn into his mouth. "Mordecai, my boy! You are the absolute best thing to happen to this server since they introduced the Tentacle Demon DLC! The #NTR hashtag is making the viewership ratings explode, and your market manipulation is pure, unadulterated art!"
"Get to the point," Mordecai replied, crossing his arms. "My time is money. Literally."
"Right, right," [Dibbs57] chuckled. "Here’s the deal: I just dropped 50,000 Premium Coins into the System. I want a front-row seat to the show. Your network logs indicate you’ve dispatched that bizarre skeleton of yours, Larry, along with the skeletal archivist Ugo, to do a 'deep clean' of some of the deadliest dungeons on the continent. He has already cleared one dungeon, so I asked for a VIP pass. I want to join their cleaning crew as a live inspector. I need to see undead Mr. Clean face off against the Abyssal Dread-Wyrm!"
Mordecai rubbed his chin. Having a Premium viewer on the field was a massive liability, but it was also an astronomical opportunity. If Larry put on a good show, the funding from the Upper Realms trickling into Ravenloft Holdings would decuple. The public opinion of the Gods would firmly root for his janitorial staff instead of the actual Hero.
"I accept," Mordecai decided. "Cassandra, authorize [Lord Dibbs57]’s Avatar for Level 2 Access. Route his connection directly to Ugo's portal."
"A wise investment, CEO!" [Dibbs57] cheered, doffing his top hat in an exaggerated, sweeping bow. "You won't regret this! I'm going to grab more popcorn. I can't wait to see if a skeleton can successfully sue a ghost!"
The golden Avatar vanished in a flash of light, transferring directly to the Caverns of Wailing to join Ugo and Larry (thus initiating the events of the Solo Cleaning, 4).
After he was gone, the office fell silent once more.
Mordecai sighed, letting his edgy body sink back into the chair. His life was no longer just a bureaucratic nightmare; it had become a literal reality TV show for bored deities.
He glanced over at Cassandra, who was still standing near the door. Her arms were crossed tight beneath her chest, her expression caught somewhere between professional stoicism and a slight pout over the earlier misunderstanding.
"Everything alright, Cassandra?" Kaito asked, the genuine, heavy exhaustion in his voice cutting through the silence of the room.
Cassandra stopped. She didn't immediately adjust her glasses or recite corporate protocol. For a fleeting moment, the Iron Banshee dropped her impenetrable armor.
As a creature born of sorrow and wailing, a Banshee’s core function was to perceive the frequency of a soul—to hear the agonizing screams of the dying and the damned. When she had first started working for the original Lord Mordecai, his soul had been a deafening, chaotic cacophony of malice, cruelty, and bureaucratic horror, probably caused by his suffering. More than once, his soul had physically hurt her spiritual receptors just by standing in the same room as him.
But now, looking at this strange, exhausted man who inhabited the Dark Lord's body, she realized something profound.
His soul was... quieter, just like the one she once saw in Aldmax.
There was no brutal megalomania, no bloodlust, no roaring inferno of dark magic. There was only the low, steady, grounding hum of a profoundly tired, remarkably ordinary man who was just trying to fix things. The agonizing "noise" of the villain was almost gone, replaced by a strangely comforting, deeply human warmth. It was the soul of a man, not a destroyer.
To be specific, it was the soul of someone who was only seeking peace.
Her pulsing neon-blue glow softened into something much gentler. The obsessive, high-strung attorney faded for a second, leaving only a sensitive spirit who finally, truly felt safe.
"Your soul..." Cassandra murmured softly, almost to herself, her glowing eyes wide with a quiet reverence. "It makes no noise."
"Hmm?" Kaito blinked, rubbing his tired eyes with the heel of his hand. "Did you say something about the scroll?"
Cassandra shook her head. A small, incredibly rare, and genuinely tender smile graced her pale lips. She adjusted her glasses, the tips of her pointed ears now glowing with a faint, happy blue.
"No, My Lord. I simply noticed... the office feels much more peaceful today," she said softly. "I will go ensure the Renea contract is filed and instantly transmitted to Sir Galadron. Should you require anything else... my door is always open for you. Always."
Cassandra gave a deep, graceful bow—no longer a rigid corporate gesture out of fear, but one of absolute, genuine devotion—and quietly exited the room, the door clicking shut behind her.
The CEO was left alone. He looked out the window. Far away, past the blackened hills, he knew Nick was marching toward Renea, walking straight into Galadron's trap of red tape and tone-deaf ballads. And deep beneath the earth, Larry the skeleton was about to adopt an undead dragon in front of a paying audience.
Kaito looked down, rubbing his calloused hands together.
"I'm an electrician," he whispered to the empty room. "I just wanted to fix the wires."
He picked up his quill, pulled a new ledger toward him, and went back to work. Because in a world ruled by illogical heroes and capricious gods, bureaucracy was the only magic you could actually trust.
