The four divine sabertooths finally settled down after spending several minutes surrounding Devara, although none of them seemed particularly interested in moving away from him.
They stood together on the shore, their enormous bodies arranged in front of their master, occasionally nudging him with their heads as if making certain that he would not disappear again.
Devara looked at them with an amused smile before shaking his head.
Four years away had apparently done nothing to change their behaviour, and judging by the way they kept watching him, they intended to make up for every moment they had spent apart.
"All right, you four. I promise I’m not going anywhere just yet,"
Devara said, rubbing the mane of the nearest beast.
"Now, how about we make our grand entrance? I’m fairly certain the entire kingdom is waiting for us."
As though they understood every word, the four sabertooths immediately raised their heads and roared together.
Their voices rolled across the shore, drawing another wave of cheers from the citizens gathered near the bridge.
Devara chuckled at their enthusiasm and raised his hand, summoning the Vajravyaghra Rath.
Divine light gathered before him, illuminating the stone bridge as the magnificent chariot materialized.
Its imposing frame gleamed beneath the sunlight, while the four sabertooths took their positions in front of it with the familiarity of creatures who had performed this duty countless times before.
Devara ran his hand along the side of the chariot before climbing aboard and taking his seat.
He adjusted himself comfortably, rested one arm against the side of the Rath and looked toward the main gate with a satisfied smile.
"Well, then. Let’s go home."
The sabertooths answered with another series of powerful roars before moving forward, pulling the Vajravyaghra Rath toward the kingdom’s entrance.
The sound of their paws striking the stone bridge mixed with the rumbling of the chariot’s wheels, announcing their arrival long before they reached the gates.
The guards stationed at the entrance immediately straightened when they saw their king approaching.
One after another, they lowered their weapons, bowed respectfully and greeted him with voices filled with genuine happiness.
"Welcome back, Maharaja!"
Devara acknowledged them with a warm smile and a slight nod, clearly pleased to see familiar faces standing at their posts.
He had left the kingdom in their care four years earlier, and seeing the gates guarded as diligently as before reassured him that the people responsible for its protection had continued fulfilling their duties.
As the Rath passed through the main gate, the citizens gathered along the streets parted to make way for it.
The moment they caught sight of Devara sitting upon his chariot, their excitement erupted into a deafening cheer.
Men raised their hands in greeting, women smiled and called out his name, and children pushed through the crowd to catch a glimpse of the king they had heard so much about during his absence.
Some of the older citizens bowed their heads respectfully, while others simply stood watching with broad smiles, unable to hide their relief at seeing him return safely.
"Long live King Devara!"
"Welcome home, Maharaja!"
"Our king has returned!"
The cries followed the chariot as it moved deeper into the city.
Devara looked from one side of the street to the other, returning greetings whenever he recognized someone and smiling at the sight of the citizens celebrating his arrival.
He had spent four years away from Bhulok, training under Lord Vishnu and learning techniques that had pushed him beyond his previous limits, yet the warmth of the welcome reminded him that no matter how far his journey took him, this kingdom would always hold a special place in his heart.
The four sabertooths continued pulling the Rath through the cheering crowds, their heads held high and their roars occasionally rising above the voices of the citizens.
They seemed just as proud to bring their master home as the people were to welcome him.
Devara leaned back in his seat and allowed himself a quiet chuckle as he watched the celebration unfold around him.
"Four years away, and apparently nobody has forgotten me."
The nearest sabertooth gave a loud roar, as if answering him.
Devara laughed.
"Yes, yes. You can take some credit too."
The Rath continued toward the royal palace, carrying the king through the streets of his kingdom while thousands of people followed behind, eager to witness the reunion that everyone had been waiting for.
At the palace entrance, his family and closest companions were waiting.
And Devara was finally on his way to them.
The Vajravyaghra Rath continued through the cheering streets until it finally reached the royal palace, where the enormous gates had been thrown wide open to welcome their returning king.
The four divine sabertooths slowed their pace as they approached the entrance, their roars gradually quieting while the chariot rolled into the palace grounds.
Devara looked ahead, and the moment his eyes fell upon the gathering waiting for him, his expression changed.
There were so many familiar faces.
Bhishma stood near the entrance with his usual dignified posture, while Karna and Ashwatthama waited nearby, both wearing smiles that Devara recognized immediately.
Drona stood a little farther behind them, accompanied by several others whom Devara had known before leaving for his training.
Rajmata Satyavati was there too, looking at him with the affectionate expression she had always reserved for him, while Shakuni stood beside his sister with a smile that suggested he already had several remarks prepared for his returning brother-in-law.
Then Devara noticed Gandhari.
For a moment, everything else seemed to fade into the background.
She stood among his other wives, her eyes fixed upon him, and even from the chariot Devara could see the happiness she was trying to contain.
Four years had passed since he had last stood beside her, four years during which she had carried the responsibilities of the kingdom while raising their children, and now the distance between them was finally coming to an end.
But it was the sight of the children gathered around the adults that made Devara’s smile grow even wider.
Some were standing quietly beside their mothers, while others were practically bouncing with excitement, craning their necks to get a better look at the man approaching them.
A few of the older children seemed to recognize him immediately from the stories they had heard, while the youngest stared at him with wide, curious eyes.
They were unfamiliar faces in one sense, because four years had passed and they had grown during his absence, but Devara needed only a glance to understand who they were.
His children. His own blood.
The thought struck him with a warmth that spread through his entire chest, and a huge smile blossomed across his face.
He had left the kingdom knowing that his family would be waiting for him, but seeing so many little faces gathered together made him realize just how much had changed while he was away.
Some of his children had grown taller, some had learned to walk and speak, and others were now old enough to stand among their siblings and look upon their father with genuine curiosity.
Devara leaned forward slightly in his seat, his eyes moving from one child to another as he tried to take them all in.
"Look at them,"
he murmured with a soft chuckle, unable to hide the happiness in his voice.
The nearest sabertooth let out a low rumble, as though it had noticed the change in its master’s mood, and Devara reached down to pat its head before looking back toward his family.
He had spent four years learning from Lord Vishnu, enduring difficult battles and mastering techniques that had pushed his abilities to new heights.
Yet as he sat upon his chariot and looked at the people waiting for him, he felt a kind of happiness that no victory on a battlefield could ever provide.
He was no longer a student standing before his Guru.
He was no longer a warrior facing an opponent.
He was a husband returning to his wives, a father coming home to his children, and a son reuniting with the family that had waited for him.
And judging by the smiles spreading across the faces gathered before the palace, they had been waiting for this moment just as eagerly as he had.
The moment Devara’s Vajravyaghra Rath passed through the palace gates, the children gathered in the garden could barely contain their excitement.
For years, they had heard stories about their father from their mothers and Rajmata Satyavati, stories of his extraordinary strength, his divine weapons, his adventures across distant lands, and the countless times he had protected those who needed him.
To the youngest children, Devara had once been little more than a name attached to the wonderful tales told before bedtime.
As they grew older and began to understand the world around them, that name had slowly taken on a deeper meaning.
He was their father, the king whose throne stood in the great hall, the warrior whose weapons were spoken of with reverence, and the man whose return they had been eagerly awaiting.
Now, after four long years, the man himself was finally standing before them.
And what an entrance he had made.
The magnificent chariot, drawn by four enormous divine sabertooth tigers, rolled into the palace courtyard, its wheels gleaming beneath the sunlight.
The tigers moved with the pride of creatures who knew exactly whom they served, their powerful paws striking the ground as their tails swayed behind them.
