Meanwhile, in the royal garden, the four divine sabertooth tigers that normally spent their time resting beneath the trees suddenly raised their heads at exactly the same moment.
Until then, they had been lying peacefully across the grass, their enormous bodies almost blending into the shade of the garden.
They had grown accustomed to the people of the kingdom, and the citizens had long since stopped being frightened by their presence.
Everyone knew that these four beasts belonged to Devara and that they served as his companions and mounts whenever he summoned the Vajravyaghra Rath.
But now something had caught their attention.
All four lifted their heads toward the same direction.
Their ears moved.
Their noses caught the scent carried by the wind.
For several seconds they remained completely still, as though confirming what they had sensed.
Then the largest of the four slowly rose to its feet.
The other three followed almost immediately, their massive paws pressing into the grass as they stood together.
There was a sudden change in their behaviour that anyone familiar with them would have recognized instantly.
They knew who had arrived.
The largest tiger raised its head toward the sky and released a tremendous roar.
ROOOOOOOOOAAAAARRRRRR!
The other three joined it.
ROOOOOOOAAAAARRRRRR!
ROOOOOOOOOAAAAARRRRRR!
ROOOOOOOAAAAARRRRRR!
The combined roar swept across the entire kingdom, echoing between buildings, travelling through the streets and reaching even the farthest corners of the city.
People immediately stopped whatever they were doing.
Merchants standing in the marketplace paused with their hands still over their goods.
Soldiers turned toward the palace.
Children who had been playing in the streets suddenly became silent, while several citizens stepped outside their homes to determine what had caused the enormous roar.
Inside the palace, Devara’s wives heard it almost simultaneously.
Gandhari, who had been speaking with one of the palace attendants, stopped in the middle of her sentence.
Her eyes widened slightly as she recognized the sound.
Lata turned toward the garden.
"That sound..."
Saurabheyi smiled.
"I know."
Even some of the children immediately understood.
The younger ones looked toward their mothers with excitement.
"Was that them?"
"Are the tigers calling?"
Gandhari’s expression softened into a smile.
"They wouldn’t roar like that without a reason."
Elsewhere in the palace garden, Rajmata Satyavati had also stopped speaking.
The children surrounding her immediately looked toward the sound.
Satyavati’s face changed.
For four years she had watched Devara’s children grow while their father was away.
She knew those four divine beasts better than most people, and she knew exactly what that roar meant.
She slowly smiled.
"Your father has returned."
The children stared at her.
"Father?"
Before Satyavati could say anything else, several of them immediately jumped to their feet.
"Father is back!"
Their excitement spread through the garden as they began looking toward the entrance.
At the same time, Bhishma was in another part of the palace when he heard the roar.
The old warrior immediately stopped walking and turned his head toward the sound.
A smile slowly appeared on his face.
"So, he has finally returned."
Shakuni, who was going through administrative reports, heard the roar and immediately lowered the scroll in his hands.
He stared toward the palace windows for a moment before laughing quietly.
"Four years, and those beasts still recognize him before everyone else."
Not far away, Karna and Ashwatthama were speaking when the roar reached them.
Both men stopped at the same time.
Karna’s expression immediately brightened.
"He’s back."
Ashwatthama nodded.
"There is no mistaking that roar."
Drona received the same message in a very different setting.
He had been standing before the students at the Gurukul, explaining an archery technique when the enormous roar rolled across the kingdom.
Every student immediately turned their heads toward the distant sound.
Drona stopped speaking.
For a moment, the entire Gurukul became silent.
One of the students nervously asked,
"Acharya, what was that?"
Drona looked toward the direction of the palace.
Then a faint smile appeared on his face.
"That," he said, "is the sound of your king’s return."
The students immediately became excited, whispering among themselves.
But before Drona could continue the lesson, another roar echoed across the kingdom, followed by the other three.
The four divine sabertooth tigers were no longer lying peacefully in the garden.
They had begun moving toward the palace entrance.
Their massive tails swayed behind them as they walked, their eyes fixed upon the direction from which they could sense their master’s presence approaching.
The entire kingdom seemed to have received the same message at once.
Devara had returned.
The four divine sabertooth tigers wasted no time after leaving the royal garden.
The moment they sensed Devara’s presence approaching the kingdom, they broke into a run, their enormous paws striking the stone streets with enough force to make the ground tremble beneath them.
Their massive bodies moved through the streets with surprising speed, their long fangs visible whenever they opened their mouths to roar, and their tails swept through the air behind them as they raced toward the direction from which their master’s presence was approaching.
For a brief moment, the people along the streets stepped aside in surprise, but the hesitation lasted only until they realized exactly what was happening.
"The Vajravyaghra!"
"King Devara has returned!"
The announcement spread through the streets almost instantly.
People poured out from shops, houses and workshops, while merchants left their stalls and children rushed behind their parents just to get a glimpse of the enormous divine beasts racing through the city. Nobody tried to stop them.
Everyone knew these four creatures belonged to their king, and their sudden appearance had only one possible meaning.
Their king was coming home.
The four sabertooths continued running through the streets, occasionally releasing powerful roars that echoed between the buildings.
The sound brought even more people outside, and soon a large crowd had begun following behind them.
Some ran, others walked quickly, while children tried their best to keep up with the adults.
The excitement spread from one street to another until almost everyone seemed to know what was happening.
"They’ve gone to receive him!"
"After four years!"
"King Devara is finally back!"
The cheers grew louder as the crowd followed the four beasts toward the outer road of the kingdom.
People who had not even known that Devara was returning suddenly found themselves caught up in the celebration.
Some waved pieces of cloth above their heads, others shouted his name, and several elderly citizens stood at the sides of the road with smiles on their faces as they watched the younger generation rush forward.
The four sabertooths did not pay any attention to the crowd behind them.
Their entire focus was on one thing.
Their master.
The largest of the four suddenly released another enormous roar, and the other three immediately answered.
ROOOOOOOOOAAAAARRRRRR!
The crowd erupted into cheers.
The sound travelled all the way toward the palace, carrying the excitement of the people with it.
For four years, Devara’s kingdom had continued without its king.
Gandhari had ruled it successfully, Shakuni had helped maintain its administration, and the kingdom had remained peaceful and prosperous.
Yet despite all of that, there had always been an empty space within the hearts of the people.
Their king had been away.
Now that space was finally being filled.
The four divine sabertooths raced ahead, leading the growing crowd toward the kingdom’s entrance, while behind them thousands of citizens followed with eager faces, each one hoping to be among the first to welcome Devara home.
After four long years, the kingdom was preparing to welcome its king.
Meanwhile, the news of Devara’s return had already reached the royal palace, and within a short time the entire entrance of the palace had begun filling with people.
Gandhari was among the first to arrive, dressed in her royal attire, her expression carrying a mixture of excitement and anticipation that she had tried unsuccessfully to hide.
Four years had passed since she had watched Devara leave with Lord Vishnu, and although she had remained busy ruling the kingdom and raising their children, there had not been a single day when she had not wondered about his return.
Behind her came Devara’s other wives, each of them carrying their own excitement.
Some were smiling openly, while others were quietly talking among themselves about how much Devara might have changed after spending four years training directly under Lord Vishnu.
They had heard enough about his training to know that he had not been sitting peacefully somewhere in a divine palace.
If anything, they suspected that wherever Vishnu had taken him, Devara had probably spent most of those four years being thrown across some battlefield until he learned whatever lesson his father wanted to teach him.
Rajmata Satyavati soon joined them, accompanied by several attendants, while Devara’s children gathered around her. The children were almost impossible to keep still.
They had been asking questions ever since the four divine sabertooths had roared across the kingdom, and now they were constantly looking toward the road leading to the palace entrance.
"How long will it take?" one of the younger children asked.
Satyavati smiled.
"Your father will arrive when he arrives. You will not make him come faster by staring at the road."
The child immediately turned back toward the road.
Satyavati shook her head with a quiet laugh.
"Apparently, that advice was wasted."
