Devara slowly approached the guardian beast, his eyes remaining fixed upon the cursed chains that covered its enormous body.
Up close, the chains looked even more unnatural.
They were not merely wrapped around the beast like ordinary restraints.
They had pierced through its flesh and sunk deep into its body, with portions of the metal disappearing beneath its skin before emerging again from another part of its massive frame.
Every link carried a dark, ancient energy that pulsed faintly, almost as if the chains themselves possessed a heartbeat.
The winged guardian watched Devara approach without moving, its enormous golden eyes following every step he took.
There was pain in those eyes, but there was also something else that Devara immediately recognized. Hope.
He finally reached the first chain crossing the guardian’s chest and slowly extended his hand.
The moment his fingers touched the dark metal, the chain reacted violently.
SSSSSSSSSS!
The metal instantly heated beneath his palm.
A wave of scorching energy rushed through Devara’s hand, spreading toward his wrist as the chain attempted to burn him.
The temperature rose so rapidly that even the surrounding air began to distort.
Devara’s skin reddened, but he did not withdraw his hand. Instead, he tightened his fingers around the chain.
The guardian suddenly threw its head backward and released a tremendous roar.
ROOOOOAAAAARRRRRR!
The sound shook the entire cave.
Karna instinctively stepped forward, his hand moving toward his weapon, while Ashwatthama narrowed his eyes and watched Devara carefully.
Even the snakes surrounding the cave entrance retreated slightly from the thunderous roar.
But Devara remained where he was.
The chain burned hotter.
Flames began crawling across his forearm.
The guardian beast struggled against its restraints, causing the chains embedded within its flesh to tighten.
Its wings trembled violently, while its claws scraped helplessly against the stone platform.
Devara looked directly into its eyes.
"Don’t fight the chain."
The guardian’s breathing became heavier.
"Fight the curse."
His grip tightened.
"I know it hurts. I know every moment you’ve spent here has been pain. But if you want to leave this place, you cannot surrender now."
The guardian released another pained growl, its enormous body trembling beneath the cursed restraints.
Devara’s expression hardened.
"I am going to break these chains, but the curse will fight back. It will test you. It will test how much pain you can endure before your will breaks. So don’t let it break you."
The dark energy suddenly surged.
BOOM!
A shockwave erupted from the chain.
Devara’s entire arm shook, and cracks appeared beneath his feet as the stone platform struggled to withstand the force.
The heat became unbearable, but instead of letting go, Devara pulled the chain toward himself.
The guardian screamed.
Its muscles tightened as the cursed metal dug deeper into its body.
Devara gritted his teeth.
"That’s it."
He pulled harder.
"SHOW ME YOUR WILL!"
The guardian’s eyes widened.
"YOU HAVE SURVIVED THIS CURSE FOR CENTURIES!"
Devara shouted, his voice echoing throughout the cavern.
"YOU HAVE BEEN CHAINED, DRAINED, TORTURED AND FORCED TO HEAL ONLY TO BE HURT AGAIN! BUT YOU ARE STILL HERE!"
The guardian’s wings suddenly spread.
Its enormous claws dug into the stone.
For the first time in countless years, the beast actively resisted the curse instead of simply enduring it.
Devara smiled faintly.
"That’s the spirit."
The chains began glowing crimson.
The dark knot inside the guardian’s chest pulsed violently, reacting to Devara’s attempt to sever the curse.
Devara could feel something pushing against him through the chain.
It was not merely physical resistance.
The curse was attempting to enter his body, trying to drain his life force just as it had drained the guardian’s.
His vision briefly blurred.
Yet Devara held on.
"You’re not the only one who has something to prove."
The guardian stared at him.
Devara’s muscles tightened as he began pulling the chain apart link by link.
"I’ll break the chains."
His eyes burned with determination.
"But you..."
He looked directly into the guardian’s eyes.
"...have to break the curse with me."
The guardian answered with another roar, this time not purely from pain.
There was defiance within it.
The sound reverberated through the cavern as Devara pulled harder, while the cursed chain continued heating beneath his hands, determined to make him release it.
But Devara did not let go.
And neither did the guardian.
Devara planted both feet firmly against the stone platform and tightened his grip around the cursed chain.
The moment he began pulling with all his strength, the entire chain trembled violently, its dark surface glowing hotter with every passing second.
The curse reacted immediately, sending waves of scorching energy through the metal and into Devara’s arms, but he refused to release it.
His muscles tightened as he slowly dragged the chain away from the guardian beast’s body.
The guardian beast let out a deep, agonized growl.
It was trying desperately to remain silent, trying to control the pain just as Devara had instructed.
Its enormous claws dug into the stone, creating deep scratches beneath them, while its wings trembled uncontrollably.
Every movement caused the cursed chains embedded within its flesh to pull against its wounds, and its healing factor desperately struggled to keep repairing the damage.
But the pain was becoming unbearable.
The guardian’s growl gradually grew louder.
"Grrrrrrrrrrrr..."
Its eyes squeezed shut as its body shook violently.
Devara glanced at it but did not stop pulling.
"Hold on."
The guardian opened its eyes again.
"Just a little longer."
Devara’s arms trembled as he poured more strength into the chain.
The dark energy surrounding the metal erupted like black flames, wrapping around his forearms and trying to force him away.
Yet Devara continued.
Seconds passed.
Then minutes.
The entire cavern seemed to disappear around them as Devara focused only on the chain and the curse attached to it.
Karna and Ashwatthama stood several steps behind him, watching silently.
Neither dared interrupt him.
They could see how much strength Devara was using, but they could also see something else.
The guardian was enduring it.
Despite the unbearable pain, it had not surrendered.
Suddenly...
CRACK!
Everyone froze.
A tiny fracture appeared across one of the links.
Devara’s eyes narrowed.
"Got you."
He pulled again.
CRAAAAACK!
Another fracture appeared, spreading across the dark metal like lightning across a storm cloud.
The guardian let out a deafening roar.
ROOOOOAAAAARRRRR!
The entire cave shook.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
The snakes outside the chamber scattered deeper into the darkness.
Devara’s feet sank slightly into the stone beneath him as he gathered every ounce of strength he possessed.
"COME ON!"
He pulled with everything he had.
The cracks multiplied.
CRACK! CRACK! CRACK!
The cursed chain began breaking apart.
The dark energy surrounding it became unstable, swirling violently around Devara and the guardian.
The knot of darkness inside the guardian’s chest suddenly pulsed once, twice, three times.
Then Devara gave one final tremendous pull.
BOOOOOOOOOOM!
The chain shattered.
Fragments of cursed metal flew in every direction before dissolving into black smoke.
For several seconds, absolute silence filled the cavern.
Then the guardian suddenly collapsed onto its knees.
Devara released the broken chain and immediately stepped forward.
"Easy."
The guardian struggled to breathe.
Its body was trembling.
But something was different.
The wounds caused by the chain were no longer reopening.
Its healing factor was finally working without the curse interfering.
Then the dark knot inside its chest began to glow.
Devara’s eyes widened.
"Everyone, step back!"
Karna and Ashwatthama immediately moved away.
A thick black smoke suddenly burst from the guardian’s body.
The smoke rose from its chest, flowing through its wounds and across its enormous body before gathering above it.
The dark mist began taking shape.
Slowly, a silhouette emerged.
It had the same massive body.
The same wings.
The same lion-like head.
The same enormous claws.
It was almost an exact shadow of the guardian beast.
The creature’s eyes glowed with a dull crimson light as the smoky apparition struggled against the air, twisting and writhing as though it had been forcibly dragged out of the guardian’s body.
The guardian watched it silently.
The shadow let out a distorted roar.
Then the wind inside the cavern suddenly changed.
The smoky creature began breaking apart.
Its wings dissolved first, followed by its legs and torso.
Within moments, the entire shadow had transformed into countless strands of black mist.
The strands scattered through the cavern.
Then they vanished.
The curse was gone.
The guardian remained motionless for several seconds, almost as though it could not understand what had happened.
Then it slowly lifted its head.
For the first time in centuries, there was no pain in its eyes.
Devara stood before it, breathing heavily, his hands still slightly burned from the cursed chain.
He looked at the broken remains of the restraint scattered across the floor.
Then he looked back at the guardian.
"You are free."
The enormous beast stared at him.
Its wings slowly unfolded.
For the first time since Devara had entered the cave, the guardian spread them without the chains restricting their movement.
It raised its head toward the ceiling and released a powerful roar.
But this time, there was no agony in that roar.
It was the roar of a creature that had finally been released from its prison.
