Chapter 299: Chapter 286: These Two Scholars Are Incompetent

"Uh... Well, that’s from yesterday..."

Faced with Weiya’s questioning, Lloyd had been about to say he’d cut his hand while cooking, afraid she would get angry again.

But when he saw her staring at him, her expression a mix of seriousness and deep concern, he couldn’t bring himself to lie. He had no choice but to tell her the truth about what happened yesterday.

’Besides, what I did yesterday was a pretty big deal. It was bound to come out sooner or later.’

Weiya listened patiently without saying a word. She seemed surprisingly calm and not at all angry. Then, she snatched Lloyd’s hand, pulled off his glove, and saw the long, narrow scar. An expression of heart-wrenching pain instantly appeared on her face.

As she gently and carefully stroked the scar, she asked:

"It must have been so painful, wasn’t it?"

Lloyd smiled and scratched his head with his other hand. He replied:

"Honestly, it was fine. I was barely conscious at the time, so I didn’t feel much pain."

’Still, he had to admire the investigator Kading’s skill with that Flying Axe. It managed to slice his arm without even touching his fingers. That level of precision and control was incredible. If he were on Earth, he could definitely pass for a Giant Demon General.’

’Maybe that’s the power of a veteran investigator with twenty years of experience?’

Lloyd had actually learned the technique by helping Kading shoulder his Spiritual Contamination.

But the system panel must have looked down on such a rudimentary technique, as it wasn’t registered as a skill. So, while Lloyd understood it in his head, his hands couldn’t yet perform it. He’d need a ton of practice to reach Kading’s level.

He planned to practice when he had some free time by having the little kitten balance an apple on its head.

Just then, Weiya spoke again.

"Why did you go so far out of your way to get involved in something like that?"

"Well... I was gathering information for my third [Transcendence] and happened to hear about it. I thought some malevolent entity was hurting people over there, and I felt I was capable of dealing with it, so I went. I couldn’t just stand by and let it keep harming people...

But I didn’t expect to run into something even more troublesome. At that point, I just had to see it through. I couldn’t just let that Cult run rampant, could I?"

Lloyd explained his reasoning honestly, sneaking a glance at Weiya to gauge her reaction.

’He’d expected her to be angry, but her expression was just serious. She wasn’t angry? Or maybe just a little?’

She was silent for several seconds before sighing in resignation.

"Sigh... My boyfriend is a great hero. I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing... But at least this time, you weren’t taking risks because of your own poor choices."

From her words, Lloyd pieced together what she meant. ’She wasn’t angry, right?’

’Or maybe just a little?’

After all, his previous risk-taking was all about finding a shortcut to complete his [Transcendence]. This time, however, he was fighting against the forces of evil for the sake of the city’s peace. The two situations were clearly different in nature.

So, Weiya wasn’t against his actions, just worried for his safety.

A warm feeling spread through Lloyd’s chest. He quickly wrapped his arms around Weiya’s slim waist, showering her with promises to be careful, and managed to smooth things over.

He then excitedly told Weiya the good news about his university admission.

Weiya didn’t know much about Mizkakotok University, but she trusted the arrangements Chief Judge Tirtus had made for Lloyd. She only had one little concern:

"Just don’t let any of the other girls at that university steal you away."

"Heh heh, of course not, of course not," Lloyd said, a little guiltily.

"Oh, right. Don’t forget, we’re visiting those two scholars tonight to help stabilize your Tier. After that, I’ll take you to buy some new clothes. You can’t keep wearing your Holy Judgment Court uniform when you’re going to such a prestigious university, can you?" Weiya added.

"Heh heh, sounds good."

And just like that, having successfully navigated the difficult conversation, Lloyd returned to his daily routine: executing Demons, having an Audience with the Saint, eating lunch with Weiya, and then spending the afternoon calculating the coordinates for Mizkakotok University.

This proved to be much easier than calculating the coordinates for ’Elolo’s side.’ In a single afternoon, Lloyd managed to find the general location of Mizkakotok University. His progress was even better than he’d anticipated.

If things went just as smoothly tomorrow, he should be able to pinpoint the final coordinates.

This put Lloyd in a fantastic mood. After they finished work and left the Eighteenth District together, he couldn’t resist sneaking a few extra kisses.

Instead of rushing to visit the scholars, the two first headed to a shopping district known for its high-end boutiques. They strolled hand-in-hand through a few stores, where Weiya took the lead in picking out three new outfits for Lloyd.

They were all rather formal, serious suits, complete with accessories like leather shoes, a top hat, a watch chain, a monocle, and a Walking Stick, giving him an exceptionally prim and proper look.

’Lloyd couldn’t help but feel it would be a little strange to go to university dressed like this...’

’It was almost as if Weiya wasn’t picking these clothes for school, but for some other occasion entirely...’

But since Weiya had picked them out—and even paid for them—Lloyd couldn’t really object. He could only let her dress him up however she pleased.

"Mhm, handsome."

Weiya beamed as she looked at her boyfriend, now dressed as a proper gentleman, and reached out to pinch his cheek.
