Level 999: The Glitch King

Chapter 60: Human Yield: None

  • Next Chapter

The well opened its first memory before anyone touched the Charge. A station announcement moved through the abandoned platform in a language Jace did not know.

They drew only a little Charge at first. Mateo watched the conduit temperature while Wyatt watched the contamination meter and Jace watched his own memories. Nobody trusted one instrument enough to let it decide for all three of them.

HISTORICAL RESET RESIDUE

Contamination: 38%.

Memory pressure: 4%.

Infrastructure overwrite: 0%.

Extraction available.

Hazel shut the outer panel.

"We do not draw from it until we know what thirty-eight percent contamination means."

Wyatt lifted the receiver.

"Warden is half a kilometer from the shield."

"And feeding corrupted power into the territory may open the shield from the inside."

Mateo stood between the well and the human junction boxes bolted over its conduits.

"The barrier has no clean supply. This is the first source we found with no living yield."

"No living yield now," Hazel said. "The residue contains identity fragments."

"Fragments are not batteries."

"They may still be people."

Mateo looked toward Jace. "Can Breach Sight separate them?"

Jace opened it. The well divided into layers.

CHARGE WELL ANALYSIS

Environmental accumulation: 62%.

Dead-claim residue: 23%.

Historical reset residue: 15%.

Living yield: 0%.

Recoverable identity signatures: 0 complete / 317 partial.

Extraction paths:

Fast draw.

Filtered draw.

Structural bleed.

Fast draw offered 436 Charge in less than a minute and a sixty-one percent chance of contamination transfer. Filtered draw required equipment they did not have. Structural bleed routed small amounts through the old transit grid with lower contamination and terrible efficiency. Hazel selected the third.

STRUCTURAL BLEED

Estimated usable Charge: 96.

Time required: 00:18:00.

Contamination transfer: 9%.

Quest requirement: 350.

"Too little," Wyatt said.

"Too safe," Mateo replied.

Hazel faced him. "You say that like safety is a defect."

"I say it like two hundred people are under a failing wall."

"And I am saying a wall powered by a reset may stop recognizing which city belongs above it."

SUBWAY INSTANCE MAP

Current route stability: 73%.

Modern transit layer: ACTIVE.

Prior-layer overlap: 11%.

Projected overlap after fast extraction: 48%.

Projected overlap after structural bleed: 17%.

Samuel studied the old service lines. "Seventeen percent is enough to move a platform."

Mateo looked at him. "You said these routes have shifted before."

"I said people reported routes that did not connect."

"Maybe the bleed has always been happening."

Hazel turned back to the human junction boxes. Modern copper, fiber, signal cable, and the pale conduit beneath them all followed the same curve toward the well. Mateo pulled insulated gloves over both hands.

"We take a controlled draw. More than ninety-six. Less than fast."

Hazel opened the extraction controls manually.

CHARGE EXTRACTION CALIBRATION

Flow gate: 0%.

Contamination filter: Environmental only.

Identity-residue exclusion: INCOMPLETE.

Territory route: Anchor Room.

Emergency cutoff: Manual.

Mateo connected the transit power trunk to the pale conduit. Hazel handled the filter values. Samuel watched the map for routes that stopped matching the city he remembered. Wyatt kept one hand on the Warden receiver. Jace supplied the claim permission without claiming the well.

RESOURCE ACCESS REQUEST

Target: Transit Node A.

Relationship: Unowned environmental structure.

Temporary use requested: 350 Charge maximum.

Ownership transfer: REFUSED.

System efficiency penalty: 44%.

The well accepted anyway.

EXTRACTION STARTED

Progress: 0%.

Gross Charge: 0.

Usable Charge: 0.

Contamination: 38%.

The blue-white light turned slowly beneath Mateo's hands.

Progress: 19%.

Gross Charge: 82.

Usable Charge: 46.

Contamination transfer: 2%.

Barrier Reserve: 0 -> 46.

Safe Zone Barrier: 29% -> 31%.

Wyatt's receiver pulsed.

WARDEN REMNANT DISTANCE: 0.3 kilometers.

Mateo increased the gate.

Hazel caught his wrist. "We agreed controlled."

"We agreed enough to matter."

"The filter is falling behind."

"Then tell me where the limit is."

She watched the contamination values.

"Forty-two percent gate. No higher."

Mateo set it to forty-two.

Progress: 47%.

Gross Charge: 204.

Usable Charge: 114.

Contamination transfer: 5%.

Historical overlap: 11% -> 14%.

Barrier Reserve: 46 -> 114.

Barrier Integrity: 31% -> 35%.

Daily deficit: 8,577 Charge.

The reserve bought time without solving the debt. The well shed three black flakes that hardened before touching the platform.

CRAFTING MATERIAL ACQUIRED

Reset Residue [Uncommon] x3.

Status: Quarantined.

Hazel collected them with insulated tongs. Mateo kept his eyes on the flow.

"You were right about the contamination."

Hazel glanced at him.

"You were right about the wall," she said.

Neither treated that as victory. At sixty percent progress, the platform sign changed. The modern station name vanished. A different name appeared underneath, written in the same damaged symbols Jace had seen in the Anchor Room.

INFRASTRUCTURE OVERWRITE: 3%.

Samuel stepped toward the sign. "I know that symbol."

"From the survey marks?" Mateo asked.

"No. From a dream I had when I was nine."

The extraction stuttered.

Progress: 64%.

Gross Charge: 278.

Usable Charge: 156.

Contamination transfer: 8%.

Jace's vision split. The abandoned platform remained around him. Another platform occupied the same space, crowded with people wearing coats cut in an unfamiliar style. Their lights were white flames held inside glass. Above them, rails climbed toward a skyline where Manhattan should have been.

HISTORICAL RESET VISION

Source layer: Unknown Earth cycle.

Identity synchronization: 6%.

Exit condition: Break contact or complete memory event.

"Cut it," Hazel said.

Mateo reached for the manual cutoff. The Safe Zone flashed across the territory link.

Barrier Integrity: 35% -> 27%.

Warden proximity: 0.1 kilometers.

Inspection agent: Awaiting entry.

Structural failure estimate: 00:04:12.

Mateo's hand stopped.

"If I cut it now, they lose the reserve."

"If you continue, he may lose the present."

Jace looked through the vision at the people under the blue shield.

"Continue to three-fifty."

Mateo opened the gate two more points. The well answered.

Progress: 81%.

Usable Charge: 233.

Barrier Reserve: 233.

Barrier Integrity: 27% -> 38%.

Then the other station vanished.

Jace stood in Times Square beneath a skyline that had never existed. Red lines appeared across the sky. Drawing from the well kept the Safe Zone alive and showed him Times Square being destroyed centuries before the city existed.
