The Warden signal moved south while Jace went down. That was the compromise nobody liked. Seraphina remained above with Olivia to answer the inspection request. Carter and Owen stayed at the north boundary, where the awakened unit had begun crossing the outer ruins without entering visual range. Wyatt took the receiver and followed Jace into the subway access beneath the Spire. The tow rig pulled Jace's chair down the first service ramp with all the grace of an appliance being stolen.

Mateo made them stop at the first junction and label the route back with ordinary spray paint. Jace almost laughed until he realized why. System maps could be rewritten. A crooked orange arrow on concrete was much harder to persuade that history had changed.

Samuel laughed once. "Three generations of the same error?"

Mateo did not answer. He opened the service corridor himself. The metal door resisted until his cutters touched a thin pale seam. Then the lock released as if recognizing the tool.
