Level 999: The Glitch King
Chapter 55: Title Pressure
The phrase reached the west rooms before the food did. The king's block. People repeated it because it was shorter than active illegal shelter inside a contested territory. The System did not care why the name was useful.
Jace watched people organize faster when they used the title. He could not dismiss the benefit. Shared language reduced confusion. The danger was letting usefulness quietly become permission.
UNOFFICIAL TITLE PRESSURE
Local designation: KING.
Influence: 8% -> 10%.
Recognition threshold: 25%.
Behavioral compatibility: LOW.
Jace closed the panel. It reopened above the ration table, the medical line, and every marked exit.
Seraphina watched the copies spread. "You cannot close a title once it begins observing the territory."
"Can I charge it rent?"
"The irony would probably count as acceptance."
Madison stood over a new board made from a cabinet door.
SAFE ZONE OPERATIONS
Food reserve: 485 meal portions.
Water reserve: 1,733 liters.
Medical capacity: CRITICAL.
Shelter occupancy: 204/204.
Active volunteers: 61.
Unassigned tasks:
Salvage.
Water inspection.
Sanitation.
Boundary watch.
Vault support.
First claimant arrival: 00:43:07.
Twenty-three people had volunteered for salvage. Eleven wanted the boundary watch because it sounded important. Two had volunteered for sanitation. Madison circled the last number.
"There is your kingdom," she said. "Everybody wants a sword. Nobody wants a bucket."
Jace looked at Benjamin.
Benjamin raised both hands. "I carried water."
"You also created a title problem."
"I said I was working on it."
Grace stood beside the board collecting task choices on paper. "Nobody gets assigned. Madison posts the needs, people choose, and we rotate the dangerous work."
Madison tapped the salvage line. "That gives me twenty-three people and no way to stop all twenty-three from leaving at once."
Unlawfully taken from NovelPhoenix, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon.
"Safety conditions," Grace said. "Teams of four. Check-in time. Anyone can refuse a route."
"And if nobody takes the route we need?"
"Then we explain what happens."
"And if they still refuse?"
"Then the route does not happen."
Madison looked toward the shield. "That answer may kill people."
Grace did not look away. "A forced answer may survive long enough to become normal."
Both women turned toward Jace without asking him to decide. That was the difficult part. People had begun bringing him choices because the System recognized his claim, but every choice still belonged to someone who would live with it. Saying nothing could become its own form of command if everyone waited for his silence to mean approval.
"Post the consequences beside each task," he said. "Do not hide the danger. Do not hide what fails if nobody volunteers."
Grace nodded.
Madison added, "And once someone chooses a shift, they finish it unless the route changes or they are hurt."
"Agreed," Grace said. "Commitment is not ownership."
The System processed the exchange.
STREET LEADERSHIP PROFICIENCY UNLOCKED
Observed function: Coordinating independent actors without command authority.
Proficiency: 0% -> 4%.
Community Reputation: 0 -> 6.
Authority gained: 0.
UNOFFICIAL TITLE INTERPRETATION
Claimant rejects command.
Population continues voluntary coordination.
Standard KING compatibility: 10% -> 7%.
Alternative title search: ACTIVE.
Jace read the change twice. "Refusing it made it search for a better one."
Seraphina's expression tightened. "The System does not abandon useful behavior. It renames it."
Madison sent the first teams out through marked exits. Benjamin joined the sanitation crew without being asked, which Grace recorded with visible satisfaction and no public comment. The barrier pulsed when the salvage team crossed the boundary.
Barrier Integrity: 34% -> 33%.
Outside protection status: SUSPENDED.
Madison watched the four figures move between ruined cars.
"Bring them back if the claimant arrives early."
The System routed the sentence through Jace.
CLAIMANT ORDER REQUEST
Recall salvage team upon hostile approach? Jace rejected the command field and opened the community channel instead.
VOLUNTARY SAFETY AGREEMENT
Trigger: Hostile claimant enters visual range.
Action: Return to nearest marked exit.
Participants: 4/4 accepted.
Madison read the confirmations. "Same result."
"Different exit."
"That matters until someone ignores it."
"Then we find out whether the agreement was useful."
A shout came from the northern shelter. The corner store owner had found three cases of bottled juice and refused to place them in the common inventory. Two parents accused him of hoarding. The crowd formed quickly because scarcity made every private object look public. Madison reached them first.
"The store stays his," she said. "The juice stays his. We ask whether he will trade or donate. Nobody takes it."
A mother pointed at the shield. "We all helped build this."
"And that does not turn everything inside it into community property."
"My son has not eaten."
Madison's face changed, not softer, but more tired. She opened her own bag and removed the meal portion she had saved.
"Then he gets mine. The store still stays his."
The owner stared at the food in her hand. After a long silence, he placed one case of juice beside the ration table.
VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTION
Donor: Withheld by request.
Items: 24 juice bottles.
Compensation: NONE.
Territory ownership credit: NONE.
Community Reputation: 6 -> 11.
Morale: 64% -> 67%.
TRUST-BASED ANCHOR RESPONSE
Voluntary contribution recognized.
Anchor Stability: 57% -> 60%.
Barrier Integrity: 33% -> 36%.
The shield gained three points without taking Health or Charge. Everyone saw it. The crowd did not cheer this time. They looked at Madison, the store owner, Grace, and the thin blue light above them. The barrier had responded to trust without turning the donation into tax. The System looked at Jace anyway.
TITLE CANDIDATE DETECTED
Standard candidates rejected:
Landlord compliance: 0%.
Noble claimant behavior: 0%.
Local king behavior: 7%.
Anomalous protection pattern: CONFIRMED.
Candidate designation: THE GLITCH KING.
Candidate progress: 0% -> 5%.
First threshold reached.
Nobody in the room mistook that for safety. Jace's Health dropped when Noah's maintenance cycle arrived through the Anchor.
Health: 6/420 -> 5/420.
No Authority was awarded. No command became easier. Instead, the territory recognized one more way people could support it without becoming property.
STREET LEADERSHIP
Proficiency: 4% -> 8%.
Community Reputation: 11 -> 14.
Title acceptance required for further authority benefits. Accept candidate influence? Jace selected REFUSE.
The System recorded Jace's denial as part of the title evaluation.
