The shield formed from the ground up. Blue light ran along James's crooked boundary, climbed the bus wrecks, bent around the corner store, and rose between buildings in uneven sheets. It skipped every doorway marked as an exit. It curved around the unsafe third floor instead of pretending the structure was whole. For three seconds, the block held. Then the shield flickered.
