"Process the full lease."

The manager’s fingers practically flew across his tablet, tapping furiously as the terminal gave another crisp, green confirmation chime. "D-done! Full year lease secured, Mr. Host!"

I grabbed the set of keycards from the counter, turning around to face the two of them.

Julian was completely frozen, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. His face was a mixture of absolute shock, embarrassment, and raw fury, completely unable to process how the "broke loser" he had tried to crush yesterday had just dropped forty thousand dollars in cold, hard cash without even blinking.

Beside him, Sarah’s entire posture had shifted. The sneer was gone, replaced by a pale, wide-eyed look of deep regret. Her eyes flicked back and forth between the luxury keycards in my hand and my indifferent expression, realizing in real-time the massive mistake she had made.

"Now," I said, my voice cold as I tossed a keycard lightly in my palm, "get out of my lobby, and stay the hell away from my suite."

Julian clenched his fists so hard his knuckles turned white, but with the manager and security guard now looking at him like an obstacle to a high-paying VIP tenant, he had nowhere to turn. Giving me one last, hateful glare, he grabbed Sarah by the arm and stormed toward the double doors.

Sarah looked back over her shoulder at me one last time, her expression filled with lingering disbelief and hesitation, before being dragged out into the morning sun.

I pocketed the keycards with a sharp, satisfied smirk. The apartment was officially secured. Now, all I needed was to get Chloe through that front door.

I headed back to the library later that afternoon, weaving through the quiet aisles until I spotted her in the same tucked-away corner.

Chloe was curled into her oversized hoodie, her head resting on her arms beside a fresh stack of notes. Her shoulders were trembling. She was trying so hard to muffle her soft, shuddering sobs, desperately wiping at her face beneath her thick glasses whenever a floorboard creaked nearby.

I pulled out the chair next to her and sat down quietly, making sure not to startle her.

As soon as she sensed someone beside her, her head snapped up. She flinched, rapidly brushing the back of her sleeve against her eyes, ducking her head away to hide the blotchy redness on her cheeks.

"I’m—I’m fine," she choked out, her voice raw and muffled as she tried to pull herself together. "Just tired."

"Hey," I said softly, keeping my tone steady and calm. "You don’t have to pretend."

My gentle response broke whatever last shred of restraint she was holding onto. Chloe let out a sharp, ragged breath, her lower lip trembling as frustration boiled over her pain.

"He called me," she whispered, her fists clenching tight over her worn notebook. "My uncle. He called just to tell me that if I don’t finish his son’s research paper by tonight on top of my own work, he’s changing the lock on the front door. He said I’m an ungrateful parasite who owes him everything."

She wiped away another stray tear, her eyes flashing with a mix of utter exhaustion and bitter anger. She looked up at me through her smudged lenses, her jaw setting into a tight, resolute line.

"I can’t do it anymore," she said, her voice shaking with quiet determination. "I can’t go back to that house. If your offer... if that apartment offer is still open... I’ll take it."

"The offer’s still good," I said, offering her a calm, reassuring smile. "It’s yours. But before we go check out your new place, we’ve got one more thing to take care of."

Chloe blinked, wiping the last traces of moisture from her cheeks. "Take care of? What do you mean? My stuff is still at my uncle’s—"

"That can wait," I interrupted, standing up and pulling her chair out for her. "Trust me."

We walked out of the library together. I grabbed my bike from the rack, and without a single complaint, Chloe carefully swung her legs over the rear rack, holding tightly to the waist of my shirt.

As we pedaled down the smooth campus roads, the wind blew through her hair, blowing away the heavy, suffocating atmosphere of the library.

"Where are we actually going?" she asked loudly over the rush of the breeze, her arms tightening slightly around me as I navigated through traffic. "The apartment isn’t this way, is it?"

"You’ll see in a second," I called back with a small grin.

A few minutes later, I pulled up outside a sleek, modern commercial complex on the upscale side of town. Warm, ambient lighting glowed through frosted glass windows, and the subtle scent of eucalyptus and lavender drifted out every time the front doors opened.

Chloe stepped off the bike, looking up at the elegant sign in confusion. "A... a day spa? Why are we at a massage parlor?"

"Because you’ve been carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders for months," I said, walking over to usher her toward the entrance. "You can’t start a fresh Chapter looking like you haven’t slept since last semester. Today, you relax."

Her jaw dropped slightly, her cheeks flushing a light pink as she looked between me and the high-end spa doors. "Wait, you’re paying for this too?!"
