They ran for eleven minutes.

Not clean. Nothing about it was clean. Kael took hits that would have ended the fight at Iron Realm and absorbed them at Bronze, the pathway taking the impact and the Void composition pulling at whatever elemental content was in the techniques and processing what it could. His left arm was going to have opinions about the last pressure burst for several days. His ribs had already filed a formal complaint about the exchange three minutes in where the fighter had gotten inside his guard before the reactive mode caught up with the speed differential.

But he kept moving.

The Azura Burst Flame every time the fighter tried to close distance. Not trying to damage, trying to disrupt. The heat forcing a defensive adjustment that cost the fighter a fraction of a second, which was enough. The Void Compression Strike loaded and released twice more. The second one caught the fighter across the forearm in a way that made the arm less reliable for the remainder of the fight.

The fighter was good.

He was also fighting someone who had prepared for a different opponent and hadn’t adjusted his fundamentals fast enough to compensate.

The twelfth minute.

The fighter came in with the same compressed Essence burst from the right that had opened the fight. Not because he hadn’t learned, because he’d been setting it up. The previous three exchanges had been pushing Kael to a specific position in the courtyard. Left side compressed. Right side open.

The burst was a feint.

The real technique came from the left. A direction he hadn’t used once in eleven minutes, which was why it had taken Kael eleven minutes to realize he was being set up for it.

He didn’t get clear in time.

The technique caught him across the left side and took him off his feet entirely. Two meters of air before he hit the courtyard ground and rolled, the impact jarring through his left shoulder and up into his neck, the world tilting briefly before his Bronze Realm body processed it and his mind caught up. 𝑓𝑟ℯℴ𝓂

He was on his hands and knees.

The courtyard was very quiet.

He looked at the packed earth beneath his hands. At the marks around the post in the center. At the morning light coming through the compound walls at the angle it came at this hour.

‘Get up,’ he thought. This couldn’t have been the result of the countless trainings he had endured to reach this peak state.

He got up.

The chosen fighter was watching him from across the courtyard. His right arm held slightly lower than his left. The Compression Strike damage still present, the arm not fully reliable. His breathing was controlled but not easy. His guard had small gaps in it that hadn’t been there at the start.

Eleven minutes of fighting a Bronze Realm Void cultivator with techniques he’d never encountered had cost him something.

Not enough to have lost.

Enough that the gap between them was smaller than Silver Realm against Bronze Realm should produce.

Kael looked at the ring.

The passive draw was running at maximum. All crystals integrated, the channel at fullest capacity, Seradhiel’s presence through it as close as it had ever been. Whatever the first seal breaking had done to the quality of the channel was running at its clearest in this moment. The pressure of a fight, the Void composition developing under combat stress the way she’d told him it would.

He found the Void thread.

Drew it down his arm.

Past the wrist.

Into the palm.

The compression built faster than it had ever built before, the pathway running wide and clean, the passive draw amplifying the output beyond what his own Bronze Realm thread could produce alone. The heat from the Azura Burst Flame loading simultaneously on the other hand, pulling from the ambient warmth of the morning air and the sun-warmed compound walls.

Both techniques. Simultaneously.

Something he hadn’t been able to do at Iron Realm. Something that the Bronze Realm pathway expansion had made possible and the array had developed and this fight had pushed to the point where it was available.

The chosen fighter saw it.

Saw both hands loading.

Saw what was coming.

He moved first committed forward, closing the distance to get inside the technique range before the release, the experienced fighter’s correct read of the situation.

Kael let him come.

Three meters. Two.

He released the Azura Burst Flame at one meter. Not at the fighter, at the ground between them, the blue edged fire creating a sudden heat displacement that forced the fighter’s next step to adjust.

The adjustment took a fraction of a second.

The Void Compression Strike released into the fighter’s chest in that fraction of a second at intermediate proficiency with maximum passive draw amplification.

Ninety percent compression transfer.

Into an already compromised Silver Realm body that had been taking Void output for eleven minutes.

The impact sound carried across the courtyard.

The chosen fighter went down.

He didn’t get up.

Silence.

Kael stood in the center of the courtyard breathing hard. His left arm was reporting multiple grievances. His ribs were still filing that formal complaint from three minutes in. His Bronze Realm pathway was running hot from sustained output and the passive draw was already working to replenish what the fight had spent.

He looked at the chosen fighter on the ground.

Not dead. Be could see the chest moving. Incapacitated. The Void Compression Strike at that output level into an already stressed cultivator frame had done what it was built to do.

He looked at Mira against the south wall.

She was on her feet. Had been since the first exchange probably. He hadn’t been able to track her during the fight but she was standing now with the spear in both hands and an expression on her face that he didn’t have time to read properly.

He looked at the sect master.

Still in his chair.

Looking at Kael across the courtyard with an expression that was not the one he’d been wearing when the fight started.

The sect master stood up.
