The man who walked out of the main hall was not what Kael expected.

Not large. Medium sized build, the kind of frame that didn’t announce itself until it moved. Maybe thirty-five in appearance, which in cultivation terms meant nothing. His gear was plain. No sect insignia, no decorative elements, nothing that said look at me. The kind of person who had learned a long time ago that the fight started before the fight started and announcing yourself was a disadvantage.

He stopped five meters from Kael and looked at him.

Really looked. The slow comprehensive assessment of someone who had been given a detailed brief on an opponent and was now reconciling the brief with what was standing in front of him.

The reconciliation was taking longer than it should have.

‘He knows something is wrong,’ Kael thought. ‘The brief said Iron Realm. What he’s reading is Bronze. He’s recalibrating.’

Good. Recalibration took time. Time was useful.

The chosen fighter looked at the ring. Then at the black robe. Then at the sword. Then back at Kael’s face with the expression of someone who had prepared for a specific problem and was now being presented with a different one.

He looked at the sect master.

The sect master made a small gesture. Continue.

The chosen fighter looked back at Kael.

Then he moved.

Fast.

Not the measured opening of someone feeling out an opponent. A committed first strike, Silver Realm physical output driving forward with the economy of someone who had decided that recalibration happened after the first exchange not before it.

Kael sidestepped.

Not clean. The speed was higher than the mountain variants, higher than the Ring Seeker foot soldiers on the Crestfall road, the gap between Silver Realm technique and Bronze Realm reaction time making itself known in the first second of the fight. He got enough of his body clear that the strike caught his shoulder rather than his chest but enough of it to send him sideways two steps before he found his footing.

‘Silver Realm,’ he thought. ‘Not Gold. The sect master’s chosen man is Silver Realm.’

Which meant this was a fight he could actually have.

He found his footing and turned.

The chosen fighter had already reset. No overextension, no wasted momentum, the clean recovery of someone who had been training for exactly this situation for however long the sect master had been preparing him. He was reading Kael’s movement. Mapping the footwork. Storing the data from the first exchange.

Smart fighter. Experienced fighter.

‘Stop thinking,’ Kael thought. ‘Reactive mode.’

He let go of the analysis.

The chosen fighter came in again. lower this time, the adjustment immediate, a body shot rather than the high strike from the first exchange. Kael’s body moved before his mind finished registering the angle. Inside the reach, forearm up against the elbow to kill the extension, weight forward rather than back.

The Void thread was already in his palm.

He released the Azura Burst Flame at contact range. Not aimed at the face this time, at the fighter’s leading shoulder, the blue edged fire rolled out in a concentrated burst that was closer to a weapon than a technique at this distance.

The fighter took it.

Absorbed it with a crossed guard that killed most of the thermal impact but not all. Kael felt the contact through his palm, felt the fighter’s guard technique meeting the output and dispersing it, and used the half second of the dispersion to create distance.

The fighter’s shoulder was smoking slightly.

He looked at it. Looked at Kael.

Something changed in his expression. The recalibration completing itself.

‘He knows now,’ Kael thought. ‘He knows what he’s actually fighting.’

The fighter rolled his shoulder once. Settled his weight.

Then he started using techniques.

The first one came without announcement. A compressed Essence burst through his leading fist that hit the air between them and arrived at Kael as a pressure wave that wasn’t quite a strike and wasn’t quite not. Kael took it across the chest and felt his Bronze Realm pathway absorb some of the impact not all, the Void composition pulling at the elemental output in the pressure wave and processing a fraction of it before the rest hit.

Still knocked him back two steps.

“His right side,” Seradhiel said. “Every technique he has used originates from the right. He has a dominant side he has not deviated from.”

Kael filed it and kept moving.

The fighter came forward. Another pressure burst same side, same origination point. Kael stepped left this time instead of back, let the burst pass wide, and brought the Void Compression Strike up from below.

The compression had been building since the first exchange. He’d been loading it. The thread drawing down his arm, into his palm, the familiar peak pressure and he released it now into the fighter’s right side at close range.

Intermediate proficiency. Ninety percent compression transfer.

The impact sound was different from anything he’d produced on a training post. The training post didn’t have Essence reinforcement running through it. The chosen fighter did Silver Realm body reinforcement, the kind that turned a cultivator’s frame into something considerably more durable than ordinary flesh.

The strike still moved him.

Three full steps sideways. His guard dropping on the right for exactly one second as his body processed the impact.

Kael was already in the gap.

He hit the fighter’s compromised right side with a follow through. No technique, no Essence output, just the elbow strike his PMC training had made automatic, driving into the same point the Compression Strike had hit while the reinforcement was still recalibrating.

The fighter went to one knee.

Came back up immediately.

Fast recovery. Trained recovery. The kind that came from someone who had been put on the floor before and had learned how to make the getting up automatic.

He looked at Kael from one knee. Something in his expression that wasn’t in it at the start of the fight.

Then he stood fully and came again. 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ
