Investing In My Demon Empress: Every Seal I Break Makes Me Stronger
Chapter 46: Middle of Nowhere
Kael ran until the relay station sounds faded completely.
He wasn’t built for heroics. That was something the PMC years had drilled into him early and hard . The people who ran toward things that would get them killed were useful exactly once. Durability was the strategy. Stay alive, stay mobile, stay in the fight long enough for the situation to change. A dead asset solved nothing. A living one could always find another angle.
So he ran.
Not because he was afraid. Because running was the correct tactical decision and he’d stopped letting pride interfere with correct tactical decisions a long time ago.
He ran until the relay station sounds faded completely.
Then he walked. Fast but sustainable . PMC road pace, the kind that covered ground without burning through reserves he couldn’t immediately replace. The pass road descended south through foothills that were gentler than the mountain terrain above, the rock giving way to scrub grass and occasional trees, the morning light strengthening around him with the indifferent brightness of a world that didn’t particularly care what had just happened at Crestfall.
He stopped at a flat rock beside the road and sat down.
Assessment.
One ring. One spear . Mira’s, across his back. One new sword on his hip from the back room weapons rack Fen had pressed it into his hands as he went through the relay station gate, no explanation, just the sword and a look that said everything the situation didn’t have time for words. The clothes on his back proper hunter’s gear now, not the secondhand roughspun from the Valdris market, but not exactly equipped for an extended operation either.
He checked his coin pouch.
Eleven silver and some copper. Everything he hadn’t spent on the week two cultivation resources and the inn room.
He checked the crystal case.
One crystal remaining. Dark, almost black, the depth in it that suggested the light going in wasn’t the same as the light coming out. The most valuable thing he was carrying by a significant margin.
No cultivation resources. No inn room. No backup. No Fen. No Aldren. No array.
Just the road south and whatever was happening at the Ring Seeker dojo that Fen’s contact had flagged as urgent without being able to specify why.
He looked at the ring.
‘Right,’ he thought. ‘One problem at a time.’
Then
DING.
He looked at the text blooming in the air in front of him.
『 Investment Quest — Personal Category: Bearer is currently without shelter, resources, or support. Sealed entity has existed without comfort or care for 3,000 years. Quest: Before reaching your destination purchase one item of comfort or beauty. Not for yourself, not for cultivation, not for combat. Something that has no strategic value. Something chosen specifically for her. Place it in contact with the ring. Reward: Third crystal integration — accelerated. Passive draw: increased to maximum sustainable channel capacity. Failure Penalty: Third crystal integration delayed by 30 days. Timer: Before you reach your destination. 』
At the bottom:
『 Host — you have been investing in power and survival. Invest in something that isn’t either of those things. You know the difference. 』
Kael stared at the notification for a long moment.
Then he looked at the empty road around him. The scrub grass. The occasional tree. The foothills rolling south with nothing on them that qualified as a shop, a market, or anywhere that sold anything at all.
He looked at the ring.
“Right now,” he said. “In the middle of nowhere.”
The ring’s warmth sat steady against his finger. Unbothered.
“I heard it,” Seradhiel said.
“You can’t,” he said. “You can’t hear the notifications.”
“I cannot hear the text,” she said. “But I felt the system activate. And I felt your reaction to it.” A pause. “You said middle of nowhere out loud. To nobody. That tells me enough.”
Kael looked at the road south.
Then at the road behind him where the relay station was and the Remnants were and everything he couldn’t go back to right now.
Then at the scrub grass and the foothills and the nothing between here and the dojo.
He stood up from the flat rock and kept walking south.
Somewhere between here and the dojo there had to be something. A trading post. A village. A single building with a single person selling something that wasn’t a weapon or a cultivation resource.
There had to be.
The alternative was telling the system he couldn’t complete a quest because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time and he suspected the system would not find that a satisfying answer.
He walked.
Thirty minutes.
Forty.
The road curved around the base of a hill and straightened south again and there was nothing on either side of it except more scrub grass and more occasional trees and the distant line of denser forest that marked the beginning of the Ring Seeker territory.
He was calculating how much further he could walk before the timer became a genuine problem when he saw her.
An old woman.
Sitting on a low stone beside the road ahead of him. Not traveling. She had no pack, no cart, no animal. Just sitting there with her hands folded in her lap watching the road south with the patience of someone who had been watching roads for a long time and found them interesting rather than dull.
She looked at Kael when he came around the curve.
Looked at his face. At the spear. At the sword. At his left hand.
At the ring.
Her eyes stayed on the ring for exactly three seconds. Then she looked back at his face.
“You need a shop,” she said.
Not a question.
Kael stopped walking. Looked at her. Looked at the road behind him and the road ahead of him and the nothing on either side.
“Yes,” he said.
She lifted one hand and pointed at a gap in the scrub grass to the east of the road — not a path exactly, more the suggestion of one, the kind of gap that could be a deer trail or could be something used more deliberately if you knew it was there.
“Twenty minutes,” she said. “Trading post. They have what you’re looking for.”
