Investing In My Demon Empress: Every Seal I Break Makes Me Stronger
Chapter 45: Three Hundred Years
The second of Aldren’s cultivators went down at the two minute mark. Same efficiency. Different angle. The same inevitable quality of something that had always been going to happen and was simply taking the time it needed to arrive.
No elemental output. No attribute techniques. No fire or lightning or compressed Essence releases lighting up the pass road. Just hands and footwork and the kind of martial technique that came from a century of refining the same movements until they stopped being movements and became something closer to physics. Pure physical cultivation. Essence channeled entirely inward, reinforcing the body to a degree that made every strike land like a geological event and every step cover ground that shouldn’t be coverable in that time.
It was more unsettling than if they’d been throwing techniques. Techniques had counters. Techniques could be read and anticipated and worked around.
What the Remnant cultivators were doing had no counter that Aldren’s people possessed. It simply was what it was . Two hundred years of physical cultivation applied without ceremony to a problem that had been solved before it started.
“Kael,” Seradhiel said sharply. “The left flank pair has broken off from the road engagement. They are coming up the slope.”
He was already looking at them.
Two cultivators. Moving up the eastern slope toward his ridge position with the unhurried certainty of the lead cultivator on the road . No rushing, no urgency, just the steady upward progress of people who had decided where they were going and considered arrival a formality.
‘I cannot fight them,’ he thought. ‘Not Gold Realm cultivators who have been Gold Realm for longer than most kingdoms have existed.’
“You are not here to fight them,” Seradhiel said. Her voice carrying the particular weight of someone who had watched two centuries of war and understood exactly what was happening on that road below. “You are here to observe what peak cultivation looks like when it has had time to settle into itself. Remember it. Every second of what you are seeing is information about what you are climbing toward.”
Kael watched another exchange on the road below that he couldn’t fully track.
‘Peak cultivation,’ he thought. ‘Two hundred years of it. Applied without effort against people who thought Gold Realm was enough.’
He filed every frame of it he could catch and kept moving along the ridge.
He started moving along the ridge line . Not down, not toward the road. Laterally, using the ridge’s natural contour to put rock between himself and the slope below, staying above the approach, forcing the flankers to keep climbing rather than cutting off his lateral movement.
Below on the road the sound of the engagement had changed.
He looked down.
Fen.
The suppression was gone.
All of it . Not the careful layered release of the demonstration in the back room, a full drop, the Gold Realm output hitting the pass road’s ambient Essence like a stone hitting still water. The ripple of it was visible to Kael’s Bronze senses from the ridge, a wave of pressure spreading outward from Fen’s position at the relay station perimeter.
Early Gold Realm against century-old Gold Realm was not an even fight.
But it was a fight. Which was more than Aldren’s remaining cultivator had been managing alone.
Fen moved like someone who had spent three years being taught by people who considered cultivation theory a weapon . Not the instinctive combat of someone who had learned to fight, the precise calculated movement of someone who had learned to think about fighting and then applied that thinking to a body that could now execute it at Gold Realm output.
He was buying time. Not winning. But buying it.
The flankers below him on the slope were forty meters away and closing.
“There is a secondary path,” Seradhiel said. “Fifteen meters to your left. It descends the western face rather than the eastern. They will not expect western descent their containment assumed eastern approach.”
Kael found it.
A narrow path, barely a path, more the suggestion of one . A series of rocky steps descending the western face of the ridge toward the pass road’s far side. Below the relay station. Below the engagement.
‘If I go down the western face I come out south of the relay station,’ he thought. ‘Between the engagement and the road south.’
South.
Where the Ring Seeker dojo was.
Where Mira was.
He looked at the flankers. Forty meters. Closing steadily.
He looked at the western path.
Then his comm stone . A small carved piece of Essence-reactive mineral Aldren had given him that morning for exactly this situation pulsed against his palm.
Fen’s voice came through it. Strained. The particular strain of someone talking while doing something else that required significant concentration.
“Kael.” A pause with impact sounds behind it. “My contact south of the pass. Message came through twenty minutes ago.” Another pause. Longer. “The Ring Seeker dojo. Something happened there last night. My contact doesn’t have details but the sect master’s people are moving. Quickly.” The comm stone crackled. “Whatever the deal was… whatever timeline existed… it’s not the timeline anymore.”
Kael looked at the ring.
At the warmth running steady against his finger.
At the two Gold Realm cultivators thirty meters below him on the slope.
At the western path descending toward the road south.
“Go,” Seradhiel said. One word. No qualification.
He went.
Down the western face, moving fast on terrain he hadn’t scouted because there hadn’t been time to scout it, trusting his feet on the uneven rock and Seradhiel reading the ground through his senses and calling the places that would hold before he put his weight on them.
Behind him on the slope he heard the flankers reach the ridge.
Heard them stop.
Heard one of them say something to the other in a language he didn’t recognize old, the cadence of it older than anything he’d heard in Valdenmoor and then the sound of them descending after him.
Not rushing.
Still not rushing.
He hit the road south of the relay station at a run and kept running.
Behind him the sounds of the engagement on the pass road were fading not because the fight was over, because he was putting distance between himself and it, the road opening up ahead of him as the relay station fell behind.
He ran.
The comm stone pulsed again.
Fen’s voice. Harder now. More strained.
“We’re holding,” he said. “Aldren lost two people. I’m managing.” A pause that had something in it Kael didn’t have time to identify. “Go south. Whatever is happening at that dojo do not let it finish before you get there.” The comm stone crackled once more. “We will find you when this is done.”
Kael ran.
The pass road narrowed as it descended south, the mountain giving way to foothills, the morning light strengthening around him. His Bronze Realm pathway ran hot with the exertion, the passive draw from the ring supplementing the output, Seradhiel’s presence through the channel steady and close and saying nothing because there was nothing to say that the situation hadn’t already said.
He was not running from the Remnants.
He was running toward something more urgent.
