Chapter 35: Breached
Chapter 35: Chapter 35: Breached
The romantic, suffocating tension that had filled the Sub-Level 3 bunker vanished in a millisecond, instantly replaced by the frigid, razor-sharp adrenaline of war.
Donald stared at the Guild requisition terminal. The holographic wireframe of the abandoned freight warehouse rotated slowly, casting a pale green glow over his face. Twelve pulsing red dots moved across the projection. They didn’t move like human beings. They glided, darting from cover to cover with terrifying, unnatural speed, closing in on the primary infiltration routes.
Evelyn stood beside him, the dark-steel micro-mesh of her armor glowing in the dim light. She gripped the Bloodhound’s Fang tightly, her blue eyes locked on the hologram.
"They’re moving in a standard hunting wedge," Evelyn analyzed, her voice a cold, professional whisper. The weeping, vulnerable woman from five minutes ago was completely sealed away. "Three point-men taking the main thoroughfare. Nine flankers sweeping the shadows on the perimeter. They are looking for our exact coordinates."
"They don’t have to look hard," Donald said, resting his hand over the terminal’s manual override keypad. "They are walking right into the kill-box."
On the hologram, the three leading red dots approached the narrow chokepoint between the towering stacks of rusted shipping containers. Donald’s [Valuation Eye] fed the telemetry data directly into his mind.
[Target Group Alpha: Wildfire Initiates (C-Rank, Level 26)]
[Velocity: 45 mph.]
[Trajectory: Intersecting Trap Zone 1.]
Because they were Lesser Vampires, their speed was their greatest asset. But Donald had counted on that. When you move at forty-five miles per hour in the dark, you don’t have time to notice a wire that is thinner than a human hair.
"Wait for it," Donald murmured.
On the screen, the three leading dots hit the gap.
They never even saw the ’Widow-Maker’ mono-wire.
Target 1 hit the magically hardened carbon wire neck-first. The kinetic tension was so absolute that the vampire didn’t even slow down. The dot on the hologram simply split into two distinct thermal blooms—a head and a body—before both pieces hit the concrete and rapidly faded from the map.
Target 2 and Target 3, running mere steps behind the leader, tripped over the falling corpse. At that speed, tripping was a death sentence. They tumbled forward into the mono-wire web.
[System Notice: ’Widow-Maker’ Mono-Wire triggered.]
[Catastrophic Lacerations inflicted.]
[Targets Killed. Experience Gained.]
Even through thirty feet of solid concrete and lead-lined ceilings, Donald and Evelyn could hear a faint, sickening thud from the surface.
"Three down," Evelyn breathed, a fierce, predatory smile touching her lips. "Hah! They didn’t even draw their weapons."
But the Wildfire Syndicate was elite for a reason. The moment the vanguard was shredded, the remaining nine red dots instantly halted. They didn’t panic. They didn’t break formation. The hologram showed them instantly scattering out of the main lanes, leaping up into the rafters and burying themselves in the darkest, deepest corners of the warehouse.
"They’ve realized the floor is rigged," Evelyn noted, watching the dots climb the walls. "They’re using their shadow-step to bypass the physical chokepoints and are grouping up in the ceiling."
"Exactly where I want them," Donald said coldly.
He didn’t hesitate. He brought his fist down hard on the terminal’s enter key, triggering the remote detonator for the ’Solar-Flare’ UV charges he had hidden in the warehouse’s blind spots.
Even deep underground, the detonation was blinding.
A massive, muffled FWOOM echoed through the bunker. The heavy plasteel blast doors rattled in their frames.
On the surface, the dark, abandoned warehouse was instantly illuminated by five compressed spheres of artificial, holy-aspected UV radiation. It was like detonating five miniature suns directly inside the shadows.
The holographic map flared bright white for a second as the thermal sensors overloaded.
When the projection stabilized, the remaining nine red dots were in absolute chaos. Four of them were flashing erratically, dropping from the ceiling to the floor like stones.
[System Notice: ’Solar-Flare’ Flash-Charges detonated.]
[Holy/Radiant Damage inflicted. Shadow-stealth forcibly dispelled.]
Four more vampires had been incinerated or blinded so severely by the holy light that their regenerative capabilities completely short-circuited.
"Seven down," Donald said, his voice entirely flat. "Five left."
"They’re adapting," Evelyn warned, pointing at the map.
The surviving five dots didn’t retreat. Recognizing that stealth and shadows were compromised, they abandoned subtlety. They clustered together near the center of the warehouse, directly above the bunker’s entrance ramp, their thermal signatures flaring bright red with aggressive magic.
"They’ve found the entrance," Evelyn said, tightening her grip on her sword. "They are going to try and cut through the floor."
"Let them try," Donald said. He tapped a final command into the terminal.
Directly above the clustered vampires, attached to the severely rusted structural supports of the warehouse roof, the four ’Scorched-Earth’ Arc-Mines armed themselves.
CRACK-BOOM!
The bunker violently shook. The B-Rank electrical storm detonated in the rafters above. Thick cords of blue lightning arced downward, locking onto the clustered vampires, frying their nervous systems and paralyzing their muscles.
But the lightning was just all, the sheer concussive force of the Arc-Mines blew the rusted steel supports completely to pieces.
The sound that followed was deafening. It sounded like an earthquake tearing the city apart.
Thousands of tons of corrugated tin, heavy steel beams, and concrete roofing collapsed inward, crashing directly down onto the paralyzed execution squad. The vibrations traveling down through the bunker walls were so intense that Donald lost his footing, stumbling backward into the worktable. Dust and small chips of concrete rained down from the ceiling.
The terminal screen flickered wildly, static overtaking the holographic map as the sensors on the surface were crushed by the falling rubble.
[System Notice: ’Scorched-Earth’ Arc-Mines triggered.]
[Massive Environmental Collapse achieved.]
[Three Targets killed. Massive Experience Gained.]
[Level Up! You are now Level 8.]
Donald grabbed the edge of the table, feeling the fresh wave of golden heat wash through his veins. He blinked through the falling dust, staring at the glitching hologram.
Ten executioners were dead. The warehouse above them was completely leveled, buried under a mountain of scrap metal and concrete.
"Did we get them all?" Donald coughed, waving the dust away from his face.
Evelyn didn’t answer. She was staring at the heavy plasteel blast doors at the end of the room.
On the glitching terminal, two red dots slowly pulled themselves out of the rubble on the map. They weren’t flashing. They weren’t dying. Their thermal signatures were burning hotter and brighter than any of the others.
[Target: Wildfire Vanguard (B-Rank, Level 35)]
[Target: Wildfire Blood-Mage (B-Rank, Level 34)]
[Warning: Hostiles have survived environmental collapse. Imminent Breach Detected.]
"They sent B-Ranks," Evelyn whispered, stepping in front of Donald. Her Vanguard aura flared to life, casting a brilliant blue light across the dusty bunker. "The traps thinned the herd, but the elites survived the roof collapse."
Before Donald could speak, the Aegis-7 Proximity Ward bolted near the ventilation shaft shrieked. Its blue scanning lasers snapped to a solid, angry red.
THUMP.
Something incredibly heavy landed on the concrete ramp outside the blast doors.
The thick, three-foot plasteel doors were built to withstand a siege engine, but they weren’t being hit with kinetic force.
A sickening, hissing sound echoed through the bunker. The center of the dark metal doors began to glow a dull, angry cherry-red. The glow spread rapidly, turning bright orange, then blinding white.
"They’re using highly concentrated, acidic blood-magic," Evelyn analyzed rapidly, dropping into a low, lethal combat stance.
Liquid plasteel began to drip onto the concrete floor, splashing and sizzling like lava. The temperature in the bunker spiked dramatically.
Donald raised his heavy Type-3 Pile Bunker, locking the barrel onto the melting center of the door. He didn’t feel the paralyzing fear he used to feel in the slums. His Level 8 stats, combined with the [Compound Interest] buff radiating from Evelyn’s proximity, made his muscles feel like coiled steel.
He took a deep breath, channeling his Mana into his free left hand. A bright, roaring orange sphere of heat snapped into existence. His newly acquired C-Rank [Fireball].
"Let’s see how much they like the heat," Donald grunted with his eyes fixed on the melting metal.
With a deafening groan of failing structural integrity, the center of the plasteel blast doors finally gave way. A massive, jagged hole was blown inward, showering the bunker with molten slag and toxic red smoke.
From the smoking breach, two figures completely clad in charred, dark-gray cloaks stepped into the bunker. Their eyes burned with a terrifying, unnatural crimson light.
The first wave of traps was over. The physical breach was complete.
"Welcome to the kill-box," Evelyn snarled.
