Chapter 34: High Tension
Chapter 34: Chapter 34: High Tension
The hardest part of any war was never the violence. It was the waiting period before it commenced.
Six hours had passed since Donald locked the heavy plasteel blast doors of the bunker. Above them, the sun had likely set over Genesis City, plunging the smog-choked streets into darkness, but down here in the windowless concrete vault, time had completely lost its meaning.
The only light came from the pale green glow of the Guild requisition terminal and the slowly rotating holographic wireframe of the warehouse above.
Donald sat cross-legged on a metal supply crate, his Type-3 Pile Bunker resting across his knees. He was staring at the hologram. Every few minutes, he would open his golden System interface, checking his mana reserves, verifying his trap placements, and reviewing his stats.
He was trying to stay purely analytical, but the absolute silence of the bunker was deafening. It pressed against his eardrums, heavy and suffocating.
Across the room, Evelyn was pacing.
The sleek, matte-black Obsidian vanguard armor absorbed the dim light, making her look like a shadow gliding across the concrete floor. She had unhooked the Bloodhound’s Fang from her hip and was holding it in her right hand, her thumb constantly, rhythmically flicking the crossguard.
Click. Click. Click.
The metallic sound echoed sharply in the empty room.
Donald activated his [Valuation Eye], shifting his gaze from the terminal to his partner.
[Target: Evelyn Vance]
[Status: Extreme Psychological Distress.]
[Heart Rate: Elevated (130 BPM).]
[System Note: Target is experiencing severe localized trauma triggers. Cortisol levels rising.]
Donald frowned, the golden text painting a stark picture of what her stoic face was trying to hide. Evelyn wasn’t just anxious; she was standing on the absolute edge of a panic attack.
"Evelyn," Donald said softly, his voice cutting through the thick silence.
She stopped pacing instantly, her head snapping toward him. Her blue eyes were wide, dilated, and completely hyper-vigilant. She looked like a cornered animal waiting for the killing blow.
"Did the terminal ping?" she asked quickly, her grip on the cursed sword tightening so hard her knuckles turned white. "Did they trip the mono-wire? Are they in the vents?"
"No," Donald replied, holding up his hands in a calming gesture. "The hologram is clear. The Aegis ward is silent. Nobody is up there."
Evelyn let out a shaky, uneven breath and looked away. She resumed pacing, her boots scuffing against the concrete. "Right. Of course. They wouldn’t come during the day. Vampires hate the sun. They are waiting for midnight. They are waiting until we are tired."
Donald set his heavy weapon on the crate and stood up. He walked slowly toward the center of the room, keeping his movements deliberate and unthreatening.
"You need to sit down," Donald said gently. "You’re burning through your stamina. If they breach the doors, you need your mana fully rested."
"I can’t sit," Evelyn snapped, the words coming out sharper than she intended. She immediately closed her eyes and let out a frustrated groan. "I’m sorry, kid. I just... I can’t. The walls are too thick."
Donald stopped a few feet away from her. "The walls are lead-lined and three feet deep, Evelyn. That’s a good thing. It keeps us safe."
"No, you don’t understand," Evelyn whispered, her voice cracking. She stopped pacing and looked up at the high, raw concrete ceiling of the bunker. The hardened, cynical exterior of the B-Rank Vanguard completely dissolved, leaving behind the shattered survivor of the Silver Griffon Guild.
She slowly lowered the Bloodhound’s Fang, letting the tip of the scabbard rest against the floor.
"When Sterling locked us in the Obsidian Vault dungeon... it looked exactly like this," Evelyn confessed, her voice trembling. "Thick stone walls. Heavy metal doors. No windows. No way out. We sat in the dark, listening to the mechanisms lock into place, knowing that whatever was in the room with us was going to kill us."
She wrapped her free arm around her chest, shivering despite the thermal lining of her expensive new armor.
"The waiting was the worst part," she continued, a single tear escaping her eye and tracking down her cheek. "For three minutes, there was just dead silence. We stood back-to-back, our weapons drawn, waiting for the shadows to move. And when they finally did... Marcus died before he could even raise his shield. Jin’s throat was cut before he could finish casting a spell. It was just... slaughter. And I’m standing here, in another sealed concrete box, waiting for the exact same monsters to come through that door."
Donald felt a heavy ache in his chest. He finally understood. Buying a subterranean bunker hadn’t made her feel safe. It had trapped her inside the exact environment where her trauma had been born.
He closed the remaining distance between them. He didn’t hesitate or overthink his movements like he usually did.
Donald reached out and gently took the Bloodhound’s Fang from her trembling hand. He walked over to the worktable, set the cursed blade down, and walked back to her.
"Look at me," Donald said, his voice firm but incredibly warm.
Evelyn lifted her head, her brilliant, tear-filled blue eyes meeting his.
"I... might not be Marcus," Donald said, his gaze unwavering. "But... you aren’t the same Vanguard you were five months ago. We aren’t trapped in a dungeon boss room with no intel. We have a kill-box waiting for them on the surface. We have a proximity ward guarding our air. We have a C-Rank cannon, B-Rank mercenary armor, and I can literally shoot fire from my hands."
Evelyn let out a wet, breathless laugh, wiping a tear from her cheek. "A basic Fireball isn’t going to stop a Vampire Lord’s execution squad, Donald."
"Maybe not," Donald smiled softly. "But I am not going to let a bunch of overgrown leeches take you away from me."
Evelyn looked at the boy standing in front of her. He was taller than her now, his shoulders broad and thick from the System’s physical enhancements. But it wasn’t his Level 7 stats that made her breath catch; it was the absolute, unshakeable devotion in his dark eyes.
The fear that had been suffocating her for the last six hours suddenly felt very distant, replaced by a profound, overwhelming warmth.
She didn’t run away to the bathroom this time.
Evelyn stepped forward, closing the small gap between them, and rested her forehead gently against Donald’s chest. She let out a long, heavy sigh, her entire body relaxing as she allowed herself to finally lean on someone else.
"I’m terrified, Donald," she whispered into his shirt, stripping away the very last piece of her armor. "I’m not afraid of dying. I’ve made peace with that. But I am terrified of watching them kill you. Because you saved me. You put my core back together. You gave me my life back... and if they tear you apart because you stood next to me, it will break whatever soul I have left."
Donald’s heart swelled. He slowly brought his arms up, wrapping them securely around her waist, pulling her flush against him. The smooth, cool material of her armor pressed against his chest, but he could feel the intense, radiant heat of her mana core beneath it.
"They aren’t going to touch me," Donald murmured, resting his chin gently on the top of her head. He stroked her back, feeling her steady breathing. "And they aren’t going to touch you. We are going to bleed them dry, take their loot, and walk out of this bunker together."
Evelyn tilted her head up, resting her chin on his chest to look at his face. Her lips were parted slightly, her eyes shining with a deep, sensual affection that made Donald’s passive practically sing in his veins.
"You’re very arrogant for a Level 7 rookie," Evelyn murmured, a soft, genuine smile returning to her lips.
"I’m an Investor," Donald whispered back, his gaze dropping to her lips. "I just know a good return when I see one."
The tension in the room had completely shifted. The claustrophobic dread of the bunker was entirely replaced by the heavy, magnetic pull between them. They were alone at the end of the world, wrapped in each other’s arms, finding a brief, beautiful moment of perfect solace before the storm.
Evelyn’s hand slid up his chest, her fingers gently curling into the fabric of his shirt. She leaned up, her eyes fluttering shut, the distance between them vanishing into nothing.
BEEP.
Donald’s golden System interface didn’t just flash. It violently detonated in his vision, accompanied by a blaring, high-pitched alarm from the Guild terminal across the room.
[CRITICAL WARNING!]
[Hostile Infiltration Detected. Threat Level: Lethal.]
Donald and Evelyn snapped their heads toward the holographic wireframe.
The glowing blue projection of the warehouse above was no longer empty. A red dot had appeared at the edge of the map. Then another. Then three more.
Within two seconds, twelve distinct red markers had materialized inside the warehouse perimeter. They hadn’t triggered the doors or broken a window. They had simply slipped through the shadows like liquid.
Suddenly, the temperature inside the bunker plummeted. Donald’s breath plumed in the air in a cloud of white mist. His [Lesser Mana Perception] screamed in agonizing pain, overwhelmed by the sheer, suffocating density of the dark magic flooding the structure above.
The waiting was over.
Evelyn didn’t hesitate. She stepped back from Donald, the vulnerability in her eyes vanishing instantly, replaced by the absolute, chilling focus of a veteran Vanguard. She walked to the table, grabbed the Bloodhound’s Fang, and drew the red blade with a sharp, metallic screech.
Donald raised the Type-3 Pile Bunker, his thumb disengaging the safety. His heart pounded with adrenaline, but his hands were perfectly steady.
On the holographic map, the twelve red dots began moving toward the first chokepoint.
"Here they come," Donald said, his voice cold as ice.
