Chapter 159: Compound Interest

  • Next Chapter

Mordecai Sorn wore a simple brown suit, tailored plainly enough to pass for any clerk’s office in the Citadel below. He carried no armor and no weapon. He looked like a patient banker preparing to explain a disappointing account, and that stillness sat wrong in a room built for war.

The top floor held one desk, one chair, and a wall of contracts curved around the space like a cage grown from paperwork. Region 21’s stolen futures scrolled across the pages behind him, columns of names sliding past too fast to read and too many to ignore.

➤[Mordecai Sorn: Level 69]

➤[Class: Debt Tyrant - Epic]

➤[Designation: Murderer]

➤[Player Killer activated]

➤[All attributes increased by 10% against the designated Murderer]

Boss Killer stayed dark. Mordecai was a human criminal, not a System-flagged Boss like the golem downstairs, and the difference mattered less than Damien wanted it to.

"Thirty-eight offices," Mordecai said, folding his hands behind his back. "Twelve houses. Three detention facilities. You dismantled twenty years of work in forty minutes."

"Forty-three," Hamari said, because someone had to.

"Thank you." He sounded like he meant it, which was somehow worse.

Mina reached for the regional ledger floating at the wall’s center.

Mordecai closed one finger, almost lazily, and the room answered him.

➤[Compound Claim activated]

Strength drained out of her like water through a cracked cup. His Class pulled a fraction of every attribute point pledged through every contract in Region 21 and folded it into himself. His level held at 69. The pressure in the room did not.

He crossed the floor in two strides and hit Damien once.

Nightglass Armour was the only reason Damien kept his ribs. The blow still threw him through the desk and into the contract wall, pages closing around his arms before he’d finished landing.

"I do not steal," Mordecai said, straightening his cuffs. "People ask for help. I name a price. They agree."

Grace came at him from the side. He caught her shield with one hand and threw both of them across the room like he was tossing out old mail. Wrathbound stayed dark, it only charged when she’d protected someone from a landed blow, and this one had never touched her.

Daria called fire. Mordecai claimed a debtor’s fire resistance and the flames guttered against nothing. She switched to ice. He claimed someone else’s cold immunity before it finished forming.

Hamari’s shot caught him square in the forehead and flattened against a stolen ward like a coin off a wall.

"He isn’t fighting us," Mina said from the floor, breathless. "He’s fighting with all of Region 21 standing behind him. Every contract is a reserve tank."

The destruction timer read thirty seconds.

"Roles," Damien said. Pain thinned the word to almost nothing, and the team heard it anyway.

"Daria, the mana grid. Hamari, the pages with silver edges. Grace, cover Mina. Doctor Smoke, keep the prisoners breathing. Mina, invalidate whatever you can reach."

"And you?" Mordecai asked, tilting his head with something close to genuine curiosity.

Damien cut the pages off his own wrists.

"I keep you busy."

Mordecai smiled the smile of a man reviewing a familiar file. "At Level 37?"

"People keep asking me that."

He attacked before the sentence finished landing.

Player Killer’s ten percent and the strength Damien kept hidden let him survive the exchange, not win it. Mordecai borrowed swordsmanship without holding a sword, shaping a blade out of contract paper, reading every movement through the files Varek had sent ahead. He knew the reach of Shadow Dash. He knew Shadow Imitation needed stillness to work. He knew Duskfade broke the instant Damien struck, not that it mattered with the cloak already torn off downstairs. He knew, in short, everything except which piece of it Damien was willing to throw away.

Damien started the silence pattern, then broke it with a stamp loud enough to echo. Mordecai flinched toward the false rhythm. The dagger opened his sleeve and drew the first line of blood.

"Attentive," Mordecai said, glancing at the cut like it belonged to someone else. "Not brilliant."

"I know."

The answer threw him worse than any denial would have.

Behind them, Daria found the mana grid woven through the circular wall, four elemental channels feeding it like veins. Elemental Deity turned each one against itself. Fire ate its own fuel. Water dispersed. Earth grounded out. Wind cut the last threads holding the current together.

Mordecai’s fire resistance blinked out mid-sentence.

Hamari spotted the silver-edged pages Mina had described, master contracts each governing hundreds of lesser ones. Bullets would tear the borrowers along with the paper.

Armament Regina had a better idea.

She summoned Benny’s white gloves out of the evidence inventory, Mina’s permission already logged, and sent them skating across the room to peel the master pages free without so much as creasing a corner.

"That’s offensive," Benny said over the detention channel, sounding genuinely wounded by the indignity of it.

Hamari muted him.

Grace planted herself over Mina while paper spears rained down, catching every one on her shield until Wrathbound’s black light climbed her forearm like current finding ground.

"Ready," she said.

"Not him," Damien called back. "The ledger."

She turned and let the whole charge go into the contract wall.

It cracked down the center like river ice giving way.

Mina pressed both palms flat against it, feeling the fracture finish traveling under her hands.

"Every borrower named in this archive was deceived, coerced, or charged past the legal maximum," she said, and her voice held steady even though her hands didn’t. "Every extension came from forged authority. Every dependent clause breaks regional law."

Her Class caught the words and ran with them.

➤[Mass Contract Dispute accepted]

➤[Review in progress]

The timer froze at eleven seconds.

Mordecai lost hundreds of borrowed points in the space between two heartbeats. He hit Damien again on reflex, and this time Damien stayed on his feet.

Something close to fear crossed the banker’s face.

He lunged for the wall and triggered [Foreclosure], red lines racing toward every borrower riding in the rescue convoy miles away. Completed, it would strip their remaining vitality and pour it straight back into him.

Doctor Smoke connected to their medical status through her Class before the lines finished forming.

"Denied," she said, without raising her voice.

She couldn’t out-power Mordecai. She could flag every one of those borrowers as medically unfit for transfer, and for one second the System paused the seizure to check her math.

One second was enough.

Damien used Shadow Dash to slide into Mordecai’s own shadow. The banker spun, already braced for a dagger at his throat.

His hand was empty.

He caught Mordecai’s casting wrist with his left and drove the First Blood Dagger upward with his right, pulled fresh from beneath the ruined desk where his Doppelganger had left it seconds before dissolving. The clone had existed for exactly as long as it took to make the handoff.

The blade went into Mordecai’s chest to the hilt.

He looked down at it, then at Damien, with something closer to confusion than fear.

"They signed," he said.

"They survived you," Damien said. "That’s not the same thing."

Mordecai reached for Foreclosure a second time. Damien pushed the dagger the rest of the way through.

The Debt Tyrant slid down the contract wall and stayed there.

➤[Player Killer deactivated]

A word arrived in Damien’s head without being asked for.

Skinwalker.

Mordecai had worn law and patience and good manners over an appetite that had eaten people for twenty years. Left standing, he’d have rebuilt within a month, new names on cleaner paper.

’weird people.’

Damien didn’t celebrate it. He let himself feel the weight of it, filed it somewhere he could carry, and stayed upright because the room still needed him to.

Mina finished the audit with her hands still pressed to the cracked wall.

➤[Regional Black Ledger authority invalidated]

➤[All subordinate debt contracts suspended]

Across Region 21, red seals went dark one by one, like a city losing power street by street.

The first root of the Neva Order tore free.

It came out bloody, expensive, and unfinished. It came out anyway.
