Insomniac Player
Chapter 158: The Price of Boss
The Debt Golem built itself from other people’s losses.
Rare weapons tore free of evidence racks. Armour taken from defaulting Players locked around a frame of black contract iron. Mana crystals, property seals and confiscated inventory bags formed its chest. Each step struck the Citadel floor with the weight of a family losing its home.
Its head was a vault door.
Names had been scratched across several armour plates. Mina recognised them, borrowers whose equipment had vanished after default. The golem was not merely powered by stolen property. It displayed each seizure as proof that resistance failed.
Grace read one name on a shield. "Tomas Marley."
Her distant cousin had lost that shield two years earlier and disappeared after contesting the debt. The family had assumed a Gate killed him.
"Is he in the prison list?" she asked.
Mina searched. "Deceased. Black Ledger custody."
Grace’s grip tightened on her own shield until the metal creaked.
Damien stepped into her line of sight. "We return the shield. We don’t let the golem choose how angry you fight."
She breathed once and nodded, though her eyes stayed on the name a moment longer.
The machine carried personal reasons for every person in the room. That was a weapon too. Nova Corps refused to let it aim them.
➤[Debt Golem: Level 65]
➤[Regional Contract Guardian]
➤[Boss designation confirmed]
➤[Boss Killer activated]
➤[All physical attributes increased by 15%]
The buff flooded Damien’s body with clean, immediate power. It did nothing to make the golem smaller.
One iron arm swept the entrance in a single low arc. Damien shoved Grace and Mina clear of its path and caught the edge himself, both hands, Nightglass plates crushing flat against his shoulders. The 15% increase, his hidden stats, the Nine-Forged Pill’s refinement, none of it stopped his boots from ploughing trenches across the floor.
"Move," he said, through his teeth.
Everyone moved.
He wrenched the arm sideways into a pillar and let go before the rebound could snap his wrists.
The pillar shattered. The golem did not.
Hamari fired into the vault-door head. Stillpoint Lenses marked four weak points, but every round vanished into an inventory seal and reappeared out of a second seal somewhere behind the team, whistling past close enough to part hair.
"It’s stealing my bullets," she said.
"Borrowing," Mina corrected, already running calculations.
"Can you argue with it faster?"
"I can invalidate the seals. If I reach the chest."
The chest sat seven metres up a body that would not stop moving.
Daria raised a stone ramp. The golem crushed it flat before Mina reached the third step. Grace threw herself under the descending foot instead, took the impact on her shield, and drove the charged force of Wrathbound straight into its ankle. A plate buckled inward with a shriek of tearing metal.
The golem repaired itself with a stolen Elite shield, which flew from the rubble and welded itself over the wound like a scab.
Doctor Smoke had gone very still, watching the threads of mana moving between its parts. "It has no independent core. Every object supplies a fraction."
"Then we separate the contracts," Damien said.
He opened the channel to the freed borrowers still riding in the rescue convoy, miles away and moving fast.
"Mina is going to call out names and items. If you hear something that was taken from you, reject the debt through the System prompt. Just that. Nothing else."
"They already signed," Martin said.
"Under coercion. The archive proves it."
Mina understood before he’d finished the sentence. She threw the stolen ledger up across the chamber in a wall of scrolling light and activated her Rare Class.
➤[Contract Audit initiated]
Names began to appear, one after another.
"Niles Oran. Rare Bastion Shield. Principal repaid at one hundred and eighty percent."
Somewhere inside the convoy, a former defender’s voice answered, thin and furious over the channel.
I dispute ownership.
The Elite shield tore itself off the golem’s leg and clattered to the floor.
"Sana Vel. Twin Ember Blades. Signature obtained through threat to a dependent."
I dispute ownership. Also, tell whoever’s swinging those things to be careful, they’re mine!
Two burning swords dropped from its spine, and somebody in the convoy laughed despite everything.
Mina read faster. Hundreds of borrowers answered in a ragged, overlapping chorus. Weapons, crystals and armour loosened across the golem’s frame, but it kept fighting through every second of the audit, and its right fist split apart into chains that went hunting for anyone nearby still carrying an unpaid balance.
Damien ran at them before they could choose a target.
He didn’t feel fast so much as certain, each stride landing exactly where the last one had promised it would. He cut the first chain clean through, caught the second around Nightglass Armour and used Shadow Dash while it was still wrapped around him, dragging three more chains into its path and knotting the golem’s whole arm into a fist of its own making.
Grace planted herself beneath them, shield raised.
"I am protecting you from financial responsibility," she said.
"Add it to your religion."
"Already central doctrine."
Daria let water carry a current through the exposed contract joints, not to overpower the golem but to disable one inventory seal at a time with a precision that looked almost gentle from a distance. Hamari abandoned her rifle’s ammunition entirely and claimed the fallen Ember Blades instead, the swords’ true owner still shouting encouragement over the channel like a nervous parent. Armament Regina sent them spinning around the golem, cutting the straps that held its stolen armour in place one by one.
Doctor Smoke climbed its back in the middle of all of it, unbothered, like she was scaling a slightly rude staircase.
"Why is the doctor doing that?" Martin demanded.
"Because nobody else brought solvent," Damien said, and didn’t have a better answer than that.
She poured a medical compound over the mana adhesive holding the vault-door head in place. It hissed and softened. The golem reached back for her with a hand made of somebody’s confiscated armour.
Damien summoned Doppelganger beneath its left foot.
The clone bolted in the opposite direction, dragging three of the golem’s targeting marks with it like a fish pulling three separate lines. The guardian’s attention split, just long enough. Doctor Smoke dropped from its shoulder and landed in Grace’s arms.
"Never do that again," Grace said.
Doctor Smoke lit a cigarette one-handed. "Prescription refused."
The audit reached the last entry, the largest one, sitting alone at the very centre of the seal.
Mina read it aloud.
"Regional Relief Fund. Forty-one million Gold diverted through fraudulent recovery contracts."
Elias answered over the channel himself, his voice steady in a way that made the chamber go quiet around it.
"Region 21 disputes ownership."
The golem’s chest split open.
Inside was not a heart. Thousands of black pages rotated slowly around a small metal stamp bearing Mordecai Sorn’s name, the last piece the whole machine had been built to protect.
"Damien!" Mina shouted.
The guardian recovered its ruined chains and swept both arms inward at once, closing the gap like a door shutting. Damien crossed the chamber before it finished, Boss Killer’s buff burning through muscle already worn thin, carrying him through a space that shouldn’t have existed a heartbeat later.
He planted one foot on the buckled ankle, another on a plate still working loose, and climbed the moving body like it owed him something. The First Blood Dagger struck the stamp.
Once.
A crack spread across its face.
The golem seized his cloak and tore Duskveil from his shoulders in one motion, cloth ripping loud enough to hear over everything else.
Twice.
The stamp split down the middle.
The vault-door head rotated toward him, slow and final, and a beam of compressed mana began to gather behind it, hungry and building.
Damien drove the dagger with both hands.
The stamp broke.
Every disputed object fell at once, an avalanche of weapons and armour and pages, and the Debt Golem came apart around him before the beam ever fired. Damien fell with it. Grace caught the edge of Nightglass Armour and kept his head from meeting the floor by less than a hand’s width.
➤[Boss defeated]
➤[Boss Killer deactivated]
Not a single reward prompt appeared. The golem had been built from other people’s losses, and tearing it down returned what had been stolen rather than creating anything new to hand out.
Damien preferred it that way. He lay there a moment, chest heaving, and decided he could live with an empty reward screen if it meant Tomas Marley’s shield was lying somewhere on the floor instead of bolted to a monster.
Beyond the wreckage, a narrow lift opened with a soft, almost polite chime, entirely wrong for the room it was in.
Mordecai Sorn waited above.
The regional destruction timer showed fifty-eight seconds.
