Chapter 48 — Thunderheart Ascension

The words of the silver-eyed watcher never reached Aether.

He knew nothing about the weakening seal.

For now, all he knew was that something powerful was observing them.

And he had decided not to chase it.

Instead, Aether returned to the cave.

There were more immediate matters to handle.

Lyra was approaching a breakthrough.

Aether could feel the unstable fluctuations of her Origin Energy from several meters away.

“Everyone stay clear of her cultivation chamber.”

Aria nodded and moved toward the outer section of the cave.

Nyx followed her.

Aether remained nearby, but he didn't interfere.

Lyra sat beneath the Origin vein with her eyes closed.

Lightning moved across her skin.

Not wildly.

Precisely.

Her Thunderheart Physique was drawing the surrounding Origin Energy into her body and compressing it within her Origin Core.

[Thunderheart Physique: Active]

Aether watched quietly.

The next step belonged to Lyra.

He wouldn't give it to her.

Several hours passed.

The lightning around Lyra became increasingly dense.

Her breathing slowed.

Then the entire cave suddenly went silent.

The lightning disappeared.

For one second, there was nothing.

Then—

BOOM!

A pillar of blue-white lightning erupted from Lyra's body.

The cave shook.

Aria immediately raised her spear.

“Is she alright?”

Aether remained calm.

“She broke through.”

The lightning gradually settled.

Lyra opened her eyes.

A faint electric glow remained within them.

The system appeared before Aether.

[Breakthrough Successful.]

Lyra slowly stood.

She looked at her hands.

Small sparks moved between her fingers.

“Stage 3.”

Aether nodded.

“Congratulations.”

Lyra smiled.

“Now I'm only one stage behind you.”

Aether raised an eyebrow.

“Don't make it a competition.”

She smiled wider.

“Too late.”

Aria laughed from nearby.

“I think she just declared war.”

Lyra pointed toward Aether.

“I'm catching up.”

Aether shook his head.

“Then you'll have to work for it.”

“I will.”

The determination in her voice was unmistakable.

Aether nodded.

“Good.”

The following morning, the cave had become noticeably more active.

Lyra trained with her lightning.

Aria practiced Azure Spear Arts.

Nyx explored the expanded formation.

And Aether worked on the base.

The new defensive formation was still too weak.

He wanted several layers.

An outer detection formation.

A concealment formation.

A defensive barrier.

And eventually, something capable of counterattacking intruders.

But that would require better materials.

Aether looked at the map.

The B-grade Origin Zone was larger than he had initially realized.

There were several resource locations nearby.

He marked three.

An Origin Crystal cavern.

A medicinal herb valley.

And an abandoned structure roughly eight kilometers east.

The third location interested him most.

[Unknown Structure]

[Origin Energy: Moderate]

[Age: Unknown]

[Detection Interference: Present]

Aether stared at the final line.

“Another ancient structure.”

Aria walked over.

“What did you find?”

“This.”

She studied the map.

“Should we investigate?”

“Eventually.”

Lyra joined them.

“You're still worried about the thing in the north.”

“Yes.”

Aether pointed toward the eastern structure.

“We'll explore this first.”

Aria smiled.

“So we're avoiding the creepy silver-eyed thing.”

“I'm choosing not to walk into an unknown situation without information.”

“That's a complicated way of saying yes.”

Aether ignored her.

They left the cave shortly after noon.

This time, their objective wasn't hunting.

It was exploration.

The forest was relatively quiet.

Too quiet, perhaps.

But Aether didn't detect the strange silver signature.

After nearly an hour, they reached a rocky slope.

Aether stopped.

“It's beneath us.”

Aria looked around.

“I don't see anything.”

“Neither do I.”

He placed his hand against the ground.

Origin Energy flowed downward.

A faint vibration answered.

Aether's eyes sharpened.

“There's something underground.”

Lyra gathered lightning around her palm.

“Want me to open it?”

“No.”

Aether drew the Executioner's Blade.

He struck the ground once.

BOOM!

A clean crack spread across the stone.

A section of the ground collapsed.

Dust filled the air.

When it cleared, a staircase was revealed beneath them.

Ancient stone steps descended into darkness.

Aria stared.

“That definitely wasn't natural.”

Aether looked down.

“Agreed.”

The system struggled to analyze the entrance.

[Ancient Origin Structure detected.]

[Classification: Unknown]

[Estimated Age: Extremely old]

[Function: Unknown]

[Danger Level: Unknown]

[Entry Permission: None detected]

Aether smiled faintly.

“Let's see what it was built for.”

The staircase led deep underground.

The walls were covered with faded carvings.

Some depicted beasts.

Others showed humans wielding weapons.

But one symbol appeared repeatedly.

An eye surrounded by broken rings.

The same symbol from the mark outside Aether's cave.

Aria noticed it too.

“That symbol again.”

Aether stopped.

He ran his fingers near the carving without touching it.

“This isn't coincidence.”

Lyra looked around.

“Could this be connected to the watcher?”

“Possibly.”

Aether continued downward.

The deeper they went, the denser the Origin Energy became.

Eventually, they reached a massive underground chamber.

At its center stood a circular stone platform.

Nothing else.

No treasure.

No beast.

No obvious inheritance.

Aether approached.

The Executioner's Blade began vibrating.

[Origin Resonance detected.]

Aether stopped.

The stone platform lit up.

A projection appeared above it.

A massive ancient beast.

Four horns.

Silver eyes.

A body covered in dark scales.

Aether's expression became serious.

It was not the same creature he had seen beneath the Bloodline Shrine.

But the resemblance was impossible to ignore.

The projection spoke.

“If you are seeing this, the Northern Seal has begun to weaken.”

Lyra looked at Aether.

The projection continued.

“The watcher will awaken first.”

Aether's grip tightened around his sword.

“Who is the watcher?”

The projection flickered.

Its next words came distorted.

“Do not trust—”

The image shattered.

The chamber fell silent.

Aria frowned.

“That's it?”

Aether looked at the stone platform.

“No.”

A faint pulse came from beneath it.

Something was still active.

Aether placed his hand against the platform.

The system immediately responded.

[Hidden mechanism detected.]

[Activation condition: Origin Mark.]

Aether's eyes narrowed.

He raised his hand.

The silver mark on his body began glowing.

The ancient platform responded.

BOOM.

A circular formation spread across the entire chamber.

Aether, Lyra, Aria, and Nyx were surrounded by silver light.

Then a single message appeared.

[Origin Heir recognized.]

[Secondary inheritance sequence unlocked.]

Aether stared at the words.

His expression slowly changed.

This wasn't simply an abandoned structure.

It had been waiting for someone.

And somehow...

It had been waiting for him.
