Chapter 145 — The Staircase Beyond the Vault

The ancient presence continued approaching from somewhere beneath the staircase, its movements slow enough to be almost imperceptible. Yet with every passing moment, the silver inscriptions covering the Origin Vault grew brighter, and the spatial Origin Energy surrounding the group became increasingly concentrated. Aether stood at the edge of the newly revealed staircase with the Executioner's Blade in his hand, carefully observing the darkness below. The guardian's destruction had exposed something that even the ancient construct had been designed to protect, and Aether had no intention of assuming that whatever waited beneath it would be weaker than the enemy they had just defeated.

Behind him, Nyx moved closer to his side. Her evolved body radiated a powerful Origin Energy aura, and her golden eyes remained fixed on the staircase. Aether glanced at her, noticing that the strange pattern on her forehead responded whenever the inscriptions illuminated. He placed a hand against her head, and Nyx leaned into his touch for a brief moment before returning her attention to the darkness. Her evolution had clearly changed more than her physical appearance, but Aether decided not to investigate her abilities while they were standing beside an unstable ancient structure. There would be time to understand her growth once they were somewhere safer.

"You're really going to investigate that thing immediately?" Lyra asked, looking from the staircase to Aether. "We just fought a guardian an entire major realm above you, and the place nearly collapsed around us."

"Which is exactly why I want to understand what it was protecting," Aether replied. "If we leave without learning anything, someone else might discover this place later. I would rather know what we're dealing with before that happens."

Lyra sighed, although she did not argue further. Aria stood beside her with Starfall in hand, her Starforged Physique still circulating a faint stellar radiance through her body. She looked toward Aether, then briefly at Nyx. The beast had always occupied a place in his life that none of them could replace, and seeing her evolved form standing beside him seemed to reassure Aria more than she wanted to admit.

"At least let us recover before going down," Aria said. "Seris has spent a lot of energy during the fight, and the rest of us aren't in perfect condition either."

Aether looked across the group. Seris was indeed pale from the effort of repeatedly condensing her Life Essence, while Vaelira's breathing remained slightly uneven after stabilizing the collapsing spatial layer. The others had sustained varying degrees of exhaustion, even if nobody had suffered an injury that immediately threatened their lives.

"Ten minutes," he decided. "Recover what you can, and nobody approaches the staircase alone."

He returned the Executioner's Blade to its storage space and sat near the wall, allowing his Origin Energy to circulate through his body. The guardian's attacks had left his arms aching, and although his physique was recovering, the difference between Origin Tempering and Origin Vein had exposed a weakness he could not afford to ignore. His current strength was impressive for his realm, but there were limits to how much he could overcome through technique and physical toughness alone. If he wanted to face increasingly powerful opponents without relying entirely on his companions or weapons, he needed to keep improving every aspect of his foundation.

His Infinite Origin Physique continued absorbing the remaining Origin Energy in the chamber. The process was gradual, but the energy flowing through his body had become noticeably more responsive since reaching the first development milestone. He examined the sensation internally, looking for any signs of incompatibility or instability, yet nothing immediately demanded his attention. The physique's development remained a long-term process, and he was not going to force it forward merely because an ancient staircase had appeared.

Across the chamber, Seris sat with her eyes closed, carefully restoring the energy she had expended during the battle. Aria and Lyra discussed the guardian's movements while quietly comparing what they had learned from the fight. Evelyn and Elara remained near the staircase, watching for any further changes in the inscriptions. Sylvara examined the damaged crystal walls, searching for patterns that might reveal how the vault had been constructed.

Vaelira, meanwhile, studied the Spatial Origin Crystal.

"The crystal is still responding to the structure below us," she said after several minutes. "But the reaction is different from before. Previously, it was drawing energy from the vault's spatial layer. Now it feels as though something beneath the staircase is responding to the crystal itself."

"Can you determine what it is?" Aether asked.

"Not yet. The connection is too faint, and whatever is below us seems to be deliberately restricting the flow of energy." She paused before adding, "There is something else. The guardian's spatial connections weren't simply part of its construction. They were anchored to several points beneath the floor. When its core shattered, those anchors began activating."

This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings.

Aether opened his eyes fully.

"Meaning the guardian was connected to whatever lies below."

"Yes. Destroying it may have removed the final restriction."

That was an important distinction. The guardian might not have been placed there merely to keep intruders away. It could have been maintaining a seal, regulating a dangerous source of energy, or preventing the lower structure from becoming accessible. The fact that the vault had reacted so violently after its destruction suggested that its purpose had been more complicated than simply guarding a treasure.

Aether stood once the ten minutes had passed. "Then we proceed carefully. Vaelira will monitor the spatial structure, Seris will remain ready to handle foreign energy, and everyone else should watch for changes around us. If something feels wrong, say it immediately."

Nobody objected.

The group gathered around the staircase and began descending. Aether took the lead, with Nyx close beside him and the others following at measured intervals. The stairs were made of a dark material that resembled the crystal used throughout the vault, but their surfaces felt strangely smooth beneath their feet. Silver lines ran along both sides, forming patterns that resembled neither ordinary cultivation formations nor the inscriptions they had encountered above.

As they descended, the air grew colder. Their footsteps echoed into the darkness, yet the echoes sometimes returned before the sounds had fully faded, as though the space below them did not follow ordinary physical rules. Aether extended his Origin Sense, carefully probing the surrounding area. He could detect the spatial fluctuations, but the deeper they traveled, the less reliable his perception became. Something was interfering with his ability to interpret the energy.

After several minutes, the staircase opened into a vast underground chamber.

Everyone stopped.

The chamber was considerably larger than the Origin Vault above, its ceiling disappearing into a darkness filled with distant silver lights. Massive pillars stood across the floor, each covered in inscriptions that spiraled upward toward unseen heights. At the center of the chamber floated a gigantic ring made of several interlocking spatial layers. It rotated slowly without making a sound, and countless streams of Origin Energy passed through its structure like rivers flowing through an invisible sky.

Aether immediately understood that they were looking at something extraordinary.

The ring was not a simple formation. Its layers appeared to occupy slightly different spaces, overlapping without fully touching. Some sections were visible directly in front of them, while others seemed to exist several steps beyond their actual positions. Vaelira stared at it with undisguised astonishment, her Spatial Origin Crystal glowing more brightly than it had at any point since she had obtained it.

"This structure..." she whispered. "It resembles the spatial models my family spent generations studying, but the scale is completely different. We were trying to understand how separate spatial layers could be connected without destroying the boundary between them."

She took a cautious step forward.

"This is doing exactly that."

Aether examined the ring, but he did not approach it immediately. The inscriptions on the pillars were arranged in repeating sequences, and the energy flowing between them followed a deliberate pattern. Whatever the structure's purpose, it had been built by someone who understood spatial Origin Energy at a level far beyond Vaelira's current knowledge.

Then the System responded.

[Ancient Origin Structure detected.]

[Classification: Unknown.]

[Spatial Layer Connections detected.]

[Analysis incomplete.]

[Warning: Structure exceeds current analysis capability.]

Aether's eyes narrowed slightly. Even the System could not provide a complete analysis. That did not necessarily mean the structure was dangerous, but it confirmed that its underlying principles exceeded what he could currently understand.

Nyx suddenly growled.

Her golden eyes were fixed on the far side of the chamber, where a narrow platform stood beneath one of the enormous pillars. Something had appeared on it: a small, dark crystal suspended above a circular formation. Unlike the silver crystal fragments found in the vault, this one seemed to absorb the surrounding light rather than reflect it.

Aether followed her gaze.

The crystal pulsed once.

The entire chamber responded.

The interlocking ring stopped rotating, and every silver light above them went dark. For a moment, the only illumination came from the crystal on the distant platform and the faint Origin Energy radiating from the group.

Then a voice echoed through the chamber.

"Who has opened the path?"

The voice was neither male nor female, neither loud nor quiet. It seemed to emerge from the space between the pillars themselves, carrying a weight that made the air tremble.

Aether did not retreat.

"We entered through the structure above," he answered. "The guardian attacked us, and we destroyed it."

Silence followed.

Then the dark crystal pulsed again.

"You destroyed the guardian?"

The pressure in the chamber increased. Vaelira immediately moved closer to Aether, while the others strengthened their defenses. Nyx lowered her body, preparing to spring forward if anything emerged from the darkness.

Aether's expression remained composed, but his attention sharpened. He had no idea whether the presence was an enemy, an ancient remnant, or something else entirely. Until he understood its intentions, he would neither provoke it unnecessarily nor offer it blind trust.

The voice spoke again.

"Then the seal has weakened."

The dark crystal began to crack.

Aether tightened his fingers slightly.

From within the crystal, a thin strand of silver light emerged, extending toward the enormous spatial ring at the center of the chamber. One by one, the interlocking layers began rotating again, faster than before. The pillars vibrated, and the distant silver lights returned, revealing countless symbols spreading across the ceiling.

Vaelira stared upward.

"The ring is activating."

Aether watched the silver strand connect to the structure.

"No," he said quietly. "Something is using it."

At the far end of the chamber, the darkness behind the pillars began to move.

And whatever had been waiting beneath the Origin Vault was finally preparing to reveal itself.
