Chapter 157 — The Secret Within the Beast

The battlefield had finally grown quiet. The Abyssal Ravager's enormous body lay in the snow, its black armor shattered and its remaining Origin Energy slowly dissipating into the air. Around it, the surviving beasts were recovering from the battle, while the Golden-Horned Blackscale Lion watched Aether from a distance. The lion had witnessed the Ravager's strength firsthand, and it understood how difficult defeating such an opponent should have been. Yet Aether had accomplished it with his own strength, supported by the companions he had carefully cultivated.

Blackfang emerged from Aether's shadow, its crimson eyes fixed on the corpse. Ironhide followed, while the Razorclaw Stalkers spread through the clearing to ensure no other threats approached. Nyx remained beside Aether, her dark and silver fur shifting in the cold wind. Her golden eyes were fixed on the dead Ravager, and the silver pattern on her forehead glimmered faintly.

She sniffed the air before suddenly growling.

Aether glanced down at her. "Something wrong?"

Nyx circled the corpse and stopped near its chest. Her forehead mark brightened, and she lowered her head toward a small section of armor that had survived the battle almost intact. Aether immediately crouched beside her. He had noticed something unusual in that area earlier, but he hadn't yet had an opportunity to examine it properly.

"Good eyes. Let's see what you've found."

Beneath the cracked armor, a thin layer of black residue clung to the Ravager's body. It didn't behave like ordinary Origin Energy. When Aether released a thread of energy toward it, the residue trembled, producing a faint distortion in the air before returning to its previous state.

Aether narrowed his eyes and activated Origin Sense. His System responded almost immediately.

[Unknown Origin Energy detected.]

[Foreign energy residue: Confirmed.]

[Source identification: Incomplete.]

[Spatial fluctuation: Detected.]

[Warning: Insufficient data for complete analysis.]

Aether studied the information carefully. The residue had not originated from the Ravager's ordinary biological structure. Something had interacted with its body, leaving behind an energy signature that didn't match anything he had previously encountered. The brief spatial fluctuation was particularly interesting, but it wasn't enough to establish a connection to any known spatial pathway.

Nyx stepped between Aether and the corpse, her claws pressing into the snow.

Aether glanced at her. "Relax. I'm not going to stick my hand into something that might explode."

Nyx stared at him.

"What? I can be cautious."

Her ears lifted slightly when he rested a hand against her neck. Aether couldn't determine exactly what she sensed, but her reaction had been consistent since the battle ended. Whatever was hidden within the residue, Nyx had noticed it before he had.

"Good catch," he told her. "We'll investigate it properly when we know more."

He stood and turned toward the Golden-Horned Blackscale Lion. "Keep your group away from this corpse. If anything changes, leave the area instead of investigating it yourselves."

The lion lowered its head in acknowledgment. Aether had no intention of turning the aftermath of a finished battle into another unnecessary conflict. The surviving beasts were no longer hostile, and he had nothing to gain by attacking them.

"Let's go," he said.

Nyx immediately fell into step beside him, staying close as the group returned to the settlement. She occasionally glanced toward the northern forest, and Aether noticed every time. He didn't press her for answers she might not be able to provide. Instead, he made a mental note to investigate the area as soon as they had enough information to proceed safely.

That evening, Aether settled inside his cultivation chamber with Nyx resting nearby. He had several matters to address, but his immediate priority was the Abyssal Physique he had copied during the battle. The physique was already his; the dead Ravager no longer had any influence over its development. What remained was integrating its characteristics into his Infinite Origin Physique.

He opened his private System interface.

[Infinite Origin Physique — Development: 1.20%.]

[Copied Physiques Detected: 5.]

[Voidmoon Physique — Integration: 36%.]

[Starforged Physique — Integration: 12%.]

Unauthorized duplication: this tale has been taken without consent. Report sightings.

[Moonlit Life Physique — Integration: 10%.]

[Thunderheart Physique — Integration: 11%.]

[Abyssal Physique — Integration: 0%.]

Aether examined the list with a thoughtful expression. He had spent too much time treating each physique as an entirely separate project. Although each possessed different characteristics, his Infinite Origin Physique was the foundation connecting them all. The more familiar he became with their structures, the more efficiently he could cultivate them together.

The Abyssal Physique had initially resisted integration because its energy characteristics differed considerably from those already established within his body. That difficulty had been real, but it didn't mean every fraction of progress would remain equally slow. Once he understood the underlying structure, continued cultivation should become more efficient.

"Let's see how much difference that makes."

Aether began circulating Origin Energy through his body, drawing upon the five copied physiques in a controlled sequence. He first stabilized the Voidmoon Physique, allowing its spatial characteristics to reinforce the circulation of energy through his foundation. He then drew upon the Starforged Physique to strengthen his energy structure, followed by the Moonlit Life Physique's regenerative properties and the Thunderheart Physique's explosive energy characteristics.

Only after those established pathways were stable did he turn toward the Abyssal Physique.

The black energy resisted at first, attempting to follow its own absorption pattern. Rather than suppressing it, Aether guided it through the existing network, using the stability of his integrated physiques to prevent unnecessary energy loss. His Infinite Origin Physique responded, gradually identifying which characteristics could be incorporated without disrupting his foundation.

Hours passed as Aether refined the circulation. The faint black shimmer beneath his skin appeared several times before disappearing, while occasional sparks of lightning and silver light moved through his aura. The different characteristics weren't merging into an indistinguishable mass; each retained its own nature while becoming increasingly compatible with his foundation.

Finally, the System produced a series of notifications.

[Voidmoon Physique — Integration: 39%.]

[Starforged Physique — Integration: 15%.]

[Moonlit Life Physique — Integration: 13%.]

[Thunderheart Physique — Integration: 14%.]

[Abyssal Physique — Integration: 3%.]

[Infinite Origin Physique — Development: 1.23%.]

Aether opened his eyes, and a satisfied smile appeared on his face. The improvement was far more meaningful than the earlier increase of a mere hundredth of a percent. The Abyssal Physique still required considerable work, but he had established a stable foundation for its integration. Meanwhile, continued cultivation had advanced his other physiques instead of leaving them forgotten in the background.

"Much better."

He raised his right hand and released a small amount of Origin Energy. A thin layer of black armor formed over his knuckles, absorbing the energy around it before dissolving back into his palm. He repeated the test, this time reinforcing the armor with the Starforged Physique's characteristics. The result was more stable, and the energy consumption decreased slightly.

Next, he used the Voidmoon Physique to alter the direction of the energy flow before combining it with the Abyssal trait. The black armor briefly condensed around his forearm, then vanished when he released control.

Aether nodded to himself. He hadn't mastered the combination, but the first test had already revealed a useful possibility. The Abyssal Physique wasn't simply another collection of defensive traits; its energy assimilation could potentially improve the efficiency of his other abilities.

He would need to test the limits in actual combat before relying on it.

A soft sound interrupted his thoughts.

Nyx had risen and was watching him intently. Aether looked at her, then at the faint silver pattern on her forehead.

"You've been restless since we returned. Is this about the residue?"

Nyx approached him, sniffed his hand, and then turned toward the northern forest. Her golden eyes narrowed as the mark on her forehead glowed again.

Aether's expression became serious. "You sensed something similar there?"

Nyx let out a low growl.

He couldn't be certain whether she was reacting to a familiar energy signature, an unfamiliar presence, or something connected to her own unexplained mark. However, her behavior gave him another reason to investigate the north. He wasn't going to dismiss a clue simply because he couldn't immediately explain it.

"All right. We'll go tomorrow, but we're doing it properly. No wandering off alone."

Nyx looked at him for a moment before settling beside him. Aether scratched behind her ear, earning a satisfied rumble from his companion.

"That's better. You can help me investigate instead of glaring at the forest all night."

Later that night, Blackfang returned from a scouting patrol accompanied by two Razorclaw Stalkers. Aether immediately sensed their arrival and stood, allowing their impressions to pass through his connection with them. The shadows had discovered a narrow ravine north of the settlement, where deep gouges marked the exposed stone and patches of black Origin Energy clung to the ground.

The marks were far too deep to have been made by an ordinary beast. One of the Razorclaw Stalkers had also spotted a massive silhouette moving behind a distant ridge. The creature hadn't approached, and the shadows had wisely avoided pursuing it into unfamiliar terrain.

Aether studied the information. "Did you detect the same energy signature as the residue on the Ravager?"

Blackfang gave a low growl, conveying uncertainty.

"Good. We don't assume two strange things are connected just because they appeared around the same time."

He dismissed the shadows and turned toward Nyx. She was already standing, the silver pattern on her forehead glowing faintly as she stared into the darkness beyond the settlement.

Aether adjusted his coat and considered the possibilities. The Ravager's residue, the strange marks in the ravine, and Nyx's reaction might eventually prove related, but he needed evidence before drawing conclusions. Whatever waited beyond the ridge, he would approach it with his full strength available.

"Tomorrow, we're investigating that ravine," he said. "You, me, Blackfang, and the Razorclaw Stalkers. Ironhide will remain with the others until we know what we're dealing with. Nobody advances without my signal."

Nyx stepped beside him, her golden eyes bright in the darkness. Aether rested a hand against her head and smiled faintly.

"And if something dangerous is waiting for us, we deal with it together."

Nyx answered with a firm growl.

"That's what I thought."

Beyond the settlement, the northern forest remained silent. Somewhere behind the distant ridge, something moved through the darkness, leaving questions that Aether intended to answer. He now had a new physique to develop, four established physiques continuing to advance, and a companion whose instincts might reveal something even his System couldn't yet explain.

Tomorrow, he would investigate the ravine. Tonight, he would make certain that the next time he encountered an unknown opponent, he would have even more ways to defeat it.
