Chapter 54 — The Observation Network

Aether didn't waste time after leaving the valley.

The moment the Observation Tower went silent, he turned south.

"Back to the cave."

Lyra and Aria followed without arguing.

Nyx stayed unusually close to Aether.

The silver mark on her forehead had stopped glowing, but the strange sensation remained.

Something had changed.

The First Watcher had not fully awakened.

The Northern Seal was still at 90% integrity.

That meant ninety percent of the seal remained intact.

But Aether couldn't ignore the fact that it had already lost ten percent of its original strength.

More importantly, something had caused another one percent deterioration while they were inside the valley.

He didn't know what.

And that bothered him.

They reached the cave before noon.

Seris was still outside the formation.

She immediately noticed their expressions.

"What happened?"

Aether walked past her.

"The north has an ancient observation network."

Seris followed.

"And?"

"The network confirmed that the First Watcher is sealed."

Seris stopped.

"The First Watcher?"

Aether looked back.

"You know the name?"

She hesitated.

"I heard it before."

"From where?"

"An old ruin."

Aether's interest sharpened.

"What did it say?"

Seris thought for a moment.

"That the First Watcher witnessed the fall of the Origin Domain."

Aether stared at her.

"Anything else?"

She shook her head.

"No."

He believed she was withholding something.

But he didn't immediately press her.

There was no point forcing information out of someone who might not have it.

Instead, Aether entered the cave.

The others followed.

He sat before the central formation and opened the system.

[Northern Seal.]

[Original Integrity: 100%]

[Current Integrity: 90%]

[Current Status: Stable.]

[Estimated deterioration rate: Unknown.]

Aether studied the last line.

"Can you calculate the rate?"

[Insufficient data.]

"Then monitor it."

[Monitoring enabled.]

Aether nodded.

That was enough for now.

The next problem was the Observation Network.

Aether opened the new information he had obtained.

This content has been unlawfully taken from NovelPhoenix; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.

[Ancient Observation Network.]

[Primary Observer: First Watcher — Sealed.]

[Secondary Observers: 4.]

[Network Integrity: 18%.]

[Primary Function: Observation and Information Transmission.]

[Current Status: Partially Active.]

Aether tapped the interface.

"What exactly are the four secondary observers?"

The system responded.

[Information unavailable.]

"Can you locate them?"

[Partial detection available.]

Aether's eyes sharpened.

"Show me."

Four faint points appeared on the map.

One was near the northern mountains.

Another was farther west.

The third was somewhere beyond the eastern forest.

The fourth—

Aether stared.

It was near his own cave.

Very near.

"That can't be good."

Lyra looked at the map.

"How close?"

Aether enlarged the display.

A small marker appeared less than two hundred meters away.

Aria immediately stood.

"Then we're being watched."

"Probably."

Aether didn't panic.

The system hadn't detected direct hostility.

The observer could simply be recording information.

But he wasn't willing to let an unknown ancient mechanism monitor his territory indefinitely.

"We're finding it."

Lyra smiled.

"I thought you'd say that."

They moved carefully.

Aether didn't disable his concealment formation.

Instead, he expanded his detection range temporarily.

The system mapped the surrounding forest.

Trees.

Rocks.

Beast tracks.

Origin currents.

Nothing unusual.

Then Nyx stopped.

Her ears moved.

Aether immediately halted.

"What?"

Nyx stared toward a cluster of trees.

Aether followed her gaze.

At first, he saw nothing.

Then he noticed something slightly wrong.

One tree had no shadow.

The sunlight passed through its branches, yet the ground beneath it remained completely clear.

Aether walked closer.

The tree wasn't real.

It was an illusion.

He placed his hand against the trunk.

Origin Energy passed through his palm.

The illusion shattered.

Behind it was a small stone pillar.

The same eye symbol was engraved on its surface.

[Secondary Observer detected.]

Aether examined it.

[Classification: Observation Node.]

[Current Status: Active.]

[Network connection: 7.2%.]

Aether frowned.

"Only 7.2%?"

The system clarified.

[Node contribution to total network integrity: 7.2%.]

"That makes more sense."

He studied the pillar.

It wasn't particularly powerful.

It didn't seem capable of attacking.

It simply observed.

Aether reached toward it.

The moment his fingers touched the surface—

the pillar activated.

A silver eye appeared.

A stream of images flashed through Aether's mind.

The forest.

The cave.

Lyra cultivating.

Aria practicing.

Nyx sleeping.

Aether fighting the Ironclaw Stalker.

The underground Origin Spring.

The Territory Anchor.

The ancient inheritance.

The images continued.

Someone had been watching them.

Not recently.

For much longer.

Aether's expression became cold.

"How long?"

The system answered.

[Observation records detected: approximately 31 hours.]

Lyra stepped closer.

"So it has been watching us since before we found the inheritance."

Aether nodded.

"Yes."

Aria looked at the pillar.

"Can we destroy it?"

Aether considered the question.

"We could."

He examined the ancient formation.

"But destroying it may alert whoever is controlling the network."

Lyra frowned.

"So what do we do?"

Aether's gaze shifted toward the pillar.

"We use it."

He placed his palm against the eye.

The Origin Heir mark appeared.

The pillar immediately reacted.

[Origin Heir recognized.]

[Access request detected.]

Aether smiled slightly.

"Let's see what you've been hiding."

He released a controlled amount of Origin Energy.

The pillar resisted.

Aether increased the pressure.

The Executioner's Blade vibrated.

The pillar cracked.

[Adaptive Resonance: 38% → 39%]

Aether stopped.

He didn't want to destroy it.

Instead, he pushed his Origin into the network.

The eye symbol changed.

From silver—

to pale blue.

[Secondary Observer access granted.]

[Limited information retrieval available.]

Aether's eyes widened.

"Now we're talking."

A list appeared.

[Recorded Events:]

[Origin Domain Collapse.]

[Northern Seal Creation.]

[First Watcher Containment.]

[Origin Heir Departure.]

Aether froze.

"Origin Heir Departure?"

He selected it.

The pillar began projecting an ancient scene.

A vast city.

Towering structures.

Humans and beasts moving through streets filled with Origin Energy.

At the center stood a figure surrounded by countless formations.

The figure's face was hidden.

But a familiar symbol appeared above them.

The Origin Mark.

Aether stared.

The ancient recording continued.

The figure turned toward the sky.

Then the entire world shook.

The recording suddenly distorted.

A message appeared.

[Memory corrupted.]

Aether's expression tightened.

"Of course."

Then one final fragment survived.

A voice.

Ancient.

Calm.

And strangely familiar.

"If the next Origin Heir awakens, do not let the Watcher find him."

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Aether stared at the pillar.

The Watcher had already found him.

That meant whoever created the network had considered the Watcher dangerous enough to hide the next Origin Heir from it.

But there was something else.

The recording had called the Origin Heir him.

Aether slowly looked toward the north.

"Then the people who created this inheritance weren't simply preparing a successor."

Aria understood.

"They were hiding one."

Aether nodded.

"And apparently, they failed."

The pillar suddenly trembled.

A new message appeared.

[Warning.]

[Primary Observer connection detected.]

Aether's expression changed.

The system continued.

[Observation request received.]

[Source: First Watcher.]

The silver eye on the pillar opened.

For one brief moment, Aether saw the same enormous silver eye from the northern sky.

But this time—

it wasn't looking at him.

It was looking at the pillar.

Then a voice entered the chamber.

"You found the first node."

Aether's hand moved toward the Executioner's Blade.

"You're the First Watcher."

"Yes."

Lyra and Aria immediately became alert.

Aether didn't attack.

"Why are you watching me?"

The eye remained silent for several seconds.

Then:

"Because you are not the Origin Heir I expected."

Aether's expression hardened.

"Who did you expect?"

The Watcher didn't answer.

Instead, the connection disappeared.

The pillar went dark.

Aether stared at it.

He had gained information.

But one sentence had created an even larger mystery.

Someone had been expected to become the Origin Heir.

And apparently—

it wasn't him.

Aether slowly tightened his grip around the Executioner's Blade.

"Interesting."

Nyx gave a low growl.

Aether looked toward her.

Then toward the northern horizon.

The path ahead was becoming clearer.

Not safer.

Just clearer.

And for Aether, that was enough.
