Chapter 53 — The Fourth Observer

The silver eye disappeared as quickly as it had appeared.

Yet the tension remained.

Seris stood motionless near the edge of the formation, her hand still resting on her bow.

Lyra's lightning gradually faded.

Aria kept Starfall raised.

Aether remained calm.

He had learned enough about the Watcher to know that panic would accomplish nothing.

"Seris."

She looked at him.

"When did you first see the eye?"

"Yesterday."

"Where?"

"North of here."

Aether's attention sharpened.

"How far?"

"I don't know exactly. I was traveling through the mountains."

"Did it speak to you?"

Seris shook her head.

"No."

"Did it attack?"

"No."

"Then what happened?"

She hesitated.

"It looked at me."

Aether waited.

"That's all?"

"That's all."

She lowered her bow.

"Then I started feeling like something was following me."

Aether studied her carefully.

Her pulse was elevated, but that alone proved nothing.

The system continued monitoring her.

[Hostility: Low.]

[Killing Intent: None.]

[Hidden aggression detected: None.]

That was enough for now.

Not trust.

Just permission to continue the conversation.

Aether pointed toward the cave.

"You can stay outside the formation."

Seris looked surprised.

"You're letting me stay?"

"I'm not inviting you into my home."

Aether's tone remained matter-of-fact.

"But if something is following you, I'd rather know what it is before it reaches my territory."

Seris nodded.

"Fair."

She remained outside the main cave entrance.

Aether turned toward Lyra and Aria.

"We'll investigate the northern observation phenomenon tomorrow."

Lyra frowned.

"You mean we're actually going north?"

"Not deep into it."

Aether looked toward the distant mountains.

"We'll find the boundary first."

Aria understood immediately.

"You want information before confrontation."

"Exactly."

That night, Aether barely cultivated.

The appearance of Seris had changed his plans.

Four observation targets.

The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

The Watcher wasn't simply watching him.

It was monitoring multiple individuals.

That suggested a larger purpose.

Aether opened his system.

[Origin Inheritance Access.]

[Layer One.]

[Inheritance Trial Grounds: Available.]

He considered activating them.

Then stopped.

The Watcher had appeared immediately after the inheritance.

Perhaps that was coincidence.

Perhaps not.

Aether didn't like coincidences involving ancient inheritances.

He closed the interface.

Tomorrow.

First, the north.

Then the inheritance.

One variable at a time.

Morning came.

Seris had survived the night without incident.

Aether checked the formation logs.

Nothing had crossed the boundary.

No beast.

No human.

No unknown entity.

That was useful information.

Whatever had been following Seris had either stopped or couldn't cross the formation.

Aether looked at the cave.

"Stay here."

Seris frowned.

"You don't trust me?"

"No."

She blinked.

Aether continued walking.

"I don't know you."

Seris gave a small laugh.

"At least you're honest."

"I'll return before sunset."

He turned toward Lyra and Aria.

"Let's go."

Nyx followed.

The four moved north.

The forest gradually changed.

Trees became thinner.

The Origin Energy grew denser.

Small beasts disappeared completely.

Aether noticed something else.

There were no corpses.

No tracks.

No signs of fighting.

The region was simply empty.

Lyra looked around.

"This place feels wrong."

"It is."

Aether crouched beside the ground.

There were faint marks.

Four parallel lines.

Too deep to be made by ordinary claws.

Aria examined them.

"Beast?"

"Maybe."

Aether touched the mark.

The system responded.

[Residual Origin signature detected.]

[Age: approximately 9 hours.]

[Origin type: Unknown.]

"Nine hours."

Aether stood.

"So whatever left this was here last night."

Lyra looked ahead.

"Could it have been following Seris?"

"Possibly."

They continued.

The deeper they went, the stranger the environment became.

Trees began growing in unnatural patterns.

Several trunks were twisted around one another, forming circular structures.

Broken stone pillars appeared between them.

Every pillar carried the same symbol.

An eye.

Aether stopped.

"We're getting close."

Aria looked at the pillars.

"Close to what?"

Aether didn't answer.

He could feel something beneath the ground.

Not powerful.

Old.

Very old.

He activated the Origin Heir authority.

The silver mark around his Origin Core responded.

The pillars lit up.

One.

Two.

Three.

Seven.

A circular formation formed across the forest floor.

Then the system displayed:

[Origin Heir recognition confirmed.]

[Ancient Observation Network detected.]

Aether's expression changed.

"Observation network."

Lyra looked at him.

"So the Watcher can see through these?"

"That's my guess."

Aether examined the formation.

It wasn't designed for combat.

It was designed to observe.

To record.

To transmit.

And judging by its age—

it had existed long before Aether was born.

The system revealed another message.

[Network integrity: 18%.]

[Primary observer: Offline.]

[Secondary observers: 4.]

Aether's eyes narrowed.

"Four."

The four targets.

The Watcher wasn't necessarily one of the observers.

It might be the primary observer.

And if the primary was offline—

then something had begun waking it.

Aether looked north.

"Let's find the source."

They traveled another kilometer.

The ground suddenly dropped.

A massive valley opened before them.

At its center stood an enormous stone structure.

It looked like a broken tower.

Hundreds of meters tall.

Its upper half disappeared into the clouds.

Its surface was covered in countless silver eyes.

But none of them moved.

Aether's system immediately activated.

[Ancient Origin Structure detected.]

[Classification: Observation Tower.]

[Current status: Dormant.]

[Primary function: Sealed.]

Aether stared.

"So this is where the Watcher is connected."

Aria looked upward.

"Can you activate it?"

"Maybe."

Aether stepped forward.

The Executioner's Blade began vibrating.

[Ancient Origin resonance detected.]

The tower reacted.

One silver eye opened.

Then another.

Then another.

Aether immediately stepped back.

"Everyone stay alert."

Hundreds of eyes opened simultaneously.

The entire valley illuminated.

Then a voice emerged.

Not the Watcher's voice.

Something older.

"Origin Heir."

Aether tightened his grip.

"Identify yourself."

The tower remained silent for several seconds.

Then:

"Observation Network active."

"Primary Observer: awakening."

"Northern Seal integrity: 91%."

Aether frowned.

"Earlier the inheritance said the Northern Seal had begun weakening."

"Correct."

"How much?"

"9%."

Lyra's expression changed.

"That's already a lot."

Aether looked toward the tower.

"What is sealed?"

The response came immediately.

"The First Watcher."

Aether's eyes narrowed.

"First Watcher?"

"The being responsible for observing the Origin Domain before its fall."

Aria asked,

"Was it an enemy?"

The tower remained silent.

Aether repeated the question.

"Was the First Watcher an enemy?"

This time, the answer was different.

"Classification unavailable."

Aether frowned.

"Why?"

"Because the First Watcher was neither created as an ally nor designated as an enemy."

The tower's eyes began flickering.

"Its purpose was observation."

"Its purpose was knowledge."

"Its purpose was to witness the Origin Domain's final moments."

Aether's gaze sharpened.

"Then why was it sealed?"

The tower went silent.

A crack appeared across one of its silver eyes.

Then another.

"Because it witnessed something that was never meant to be seen."

The entire valley trembled.

Aether's expression became serious.

"What?"

The tower didn't answer.

Instead—

every eye on the tower turned toward the north.

At the same time.

Aether felt it.

Something had awakened.

Not completely.

But enough.

The Origin Energy in the entire northern region shifted.

Nyx's silver forehead mark burned brightly.

The Executioner's Blade vibrated so violently that Aether nearly lost his grip.

Then the system displayed a warning.

[Critical Warning.]

[Northern Seal integrity: 90%.]

Aether's eyes narrowed.

It had dropped by another 1%.

Only seconds had passed.

Then the tower spoke one final sentence.

"The First Watcher is looking back."

Every eye closed.

The valley became silent.

Aether looked at Lyra and Aria.

"Back to the cave."

Lyra nodded immediately.

They turned.

Then Aether stopped.

He looked at the ground.

A faint silver line had appeared beneath his feet.

It formed the same eye symbol.

But this time—

there were four complete rings around it.

Aether's expression hardened.

The Watcher wasn't merely observing anymore.

It was marking them.

And somewhere far beyond the northern mountains, something opened its eyes.
