Infinte Origin
The Familiar Presence
Chapter 40 — The Familiar Presence
Aether remained motionless.
The cave had been quiet only moments ago.
Now, every instinct in his body was focused toward the eastern ridge.
[Unknown Familiar Origin Signature]
[Distance: 6.2 km]
[Classification: Human]
[Potential: A-]
[Threat: Undetermined]
The system wasn't giving him a name.
It shouldn't have been able to.
Yet something about that energy felt strangely familiar.
Not like Lyra.
Not like Nyx.
Not like anyone he had encountered since awakening in this world.
It was deeper.
Older.
Connected to a part of his life that existed before everything changed.
Aether closed the system interface.
“I'll check it out.”
Lyra immediately stood.
“I'm coming.”
Aether looked at her.
“You're still recovering.”
“I can walk.”
“That wasn't the question.”
Lyra crossed her arms.
“And I'm not staying here alone while you go investigate a suspicious signal.”
Aether stared at her for a moment.
Then sighed.
“Fine.”
Nyx jumped onto his shoulder.
Aether glanced at her.
“You too?”
Nyx flicked her tail.
Lyra smiled.
“Looks like you're outnumbered.”
“Apparently.”
They left the cave.
Aether moved quickly but didn't rush.
The Origin Zone was filled with beasts, and the strange presence was only six kilometers away.
As they approached the eastern ridge, the system began detecting more energy signatures.
[Origin Beasts detected.]
[Rank: D–C.]
[Number: 11.]
Aether slowed.
Ahead, he could hear fighting.
A roar shook the trees.
Then another.
Lyra's expression became serious.
“Someone is fighting them.”
Aether nodded.
They moved through the forest.
The trees opened.
A large rocky clearing appeared.
Eleven beasts surrounded a single person.
A young woman.
Long dark hair.
A torn black jacket.
Dark trousers covered in dirt.
A broken spear in her right hand.

Blood ran down her left arm.
Yet she stood firmly.
She wasn't helpless.
She wasn't waiting for someone to save her.
She was surrounded because she had already killed several of the beasts.
Two bodies lay nearby.
Aether's eyes narrowed.
There was something about her face.
Something he couldn't place.
The woman spun her broken spear.
Lightning-like energy gathered around the weapon.
She thrust forward.
BOOM!
A Rank C beast was blasted backward.
But three others attacked simultaneously.
The woman blocked one.
Dodged another.
The third struck her shoulder.
She stumbled.
Aether moved.
The Origin Blade flashed.
A silver arc cut through the attacking beast.
The creature collapsed.
The remaining beasts immediately turned toward him.
Aether didn't give them time.
He stepped forward.
One strike.
Second strike.
Third.
Within moments, the remaining beasts were dead.
[Origin Energy absorbed.]
[Origin Points +4.]
[Origin Points: 186/200.]
[Origin Adaptation: 20.1% → 20.3%.]
The woman stared at him.
Aether stared back.
Neither spoke.
The system flickered.
[Origin signature confirmed.]
[Similarity detected.]
[Memory resonance detected.]
[Analysis unstable.]
Aether's breathing stopped for half a second.
The woman slowly lowered her broken spear.
Her eyes widened.
“Aether?”
The name struck him harder than any attack.
He didn't move.
He couldn't.
That voice.
He knew it.
Not from this world.
From before.
Before the monsters.
Before the Origin System.
Before the cultivation.
Before everything.
Aether's fingers tightened around the sword.
“…You.”
The woman stared at him.
Then her expression changed completely.
The guarded fighter disappeared.
For the first time since he had seen her, her eyes became soft.
“You're alive.”
Aether took one step forward.
“Are you…?”
He couldn't finish.
She dropped the broken spear.
“Aether.”
She ran toward him.
He barely had time to react before she reached him and wrapped her arms around him.
Aether froze.
Lyra stopped several steps away.
Nyx tilted her head.
The woman held him tightly.
Her voice trembled.
“I thought you were dead.”
Aether slowly raised his arms.
He didn't know what else to do.
He remembered.
A little girl.
A small house.
Two children sitting beneath an old tree.
Training with wooden sticks.
Sharing food.
Arguing over stupid things.
Laughing.
Growing up together.
She had always been there.
Not his sister.
Not family by blood.
His childhood friend.
The one person from his old life who knew him before he became Aether Draven.
Or rather—
before he became the person he was now.
Aether finally spoke.
“Aria.”
The woman pulled away.
Her eyes were wet.
“You remembered.”
Aether looked at her.
“How could I forget?”
Her name was Aria Vale.
His childhood friend.
The girl who had grown up beside him.
The girl who had stayed with him through his earliest years.
And the girl who had secretly loved him for longer than he had ever realized.
Aria smiled through her tears.
“You got taller.”
Aether almost laughed.
“That's what you say after all this time?”
She looked him up and down.
“You were shorter than me when we were children.”
“I was still growing.”
“You're six feet tall now.”
“Six-one.”
Aria blinked.
“You actually remember?”
“Obviously.”
For the first time, Aether smiled without forcing it.
Lyra watched them quietly.
Aria noticed her.
Her expression became slightly cautious.
Then she looked at Nyx.
“And who's this?”
“Lyra.”
Aether gestured toward her.
“She travels with me.”
Lyra stepped forward.
“Nice to meet you.”
Aria nodded.
“Likewise.”
There was no hostility.
Just curiosity.
Aether noticed something else.
Aria's cultivation.
[Analysis]
Name: Aria Vale
Species: Human
Cultivation: Origin Awakening — Stage 3
Ability: Azure Spear Arts
Physique: Starforged Physique
Potential: A-
Status: Injured
Aether's expression changed.
“You reached Stage 3.”
Aria looked at him.
“So did you.”
Aether nodded.
She smiled.
“Then I guess neither of us wasted the years.”
Aether looked at the broken spear lying on the ground.
“You need a new weapon.”
“I know.”
“Your shoulder is injured.”
“I know.”
“You're surrounded by eleven beasts.”
“I noticed.”
Aether couldn't help smiling.
She hadn't changed.
Still stubborn.
Still independent.
Still refusing to act helpless.
He looked at the system again.
[Aria Vale]
[Starforged Physique]
[Potential: A-]
[Origin Adaptation: 8.2%]
Aether's eyes narrowed slightly.
Her physique was unusual.
The system was detecting a faint resonance between her and the surrounding Origin Energy.
“You've been cultivating here for a while.”
Aria nodded.
“Since the world changed.”
“How did you survive?”
She looked away for a moment.
“By myself.”
Aether didn't interrupt.
“I was separated from everyone else when the first wave appeared. I found a few survivors, but…”
She stopped.
Aether understood.
He didn't ask her to continue.
Instead, he asked the question that mattered most.
“How did you recognize me?”
Aria looked at him.
“I wouldn't have recognized your face at first.”
She smiled faintly.
“But your eyes…”
She touched her chest.
“I knew immediately.”
Aether remained silent.
Aria looked down.
“I've been looking for you.”
His expression softened.
“For how long?”
“Since I realized you might still be alive.”
Aether looked toward the sky.
For the first time since entering this world, his journey didn't feel completely unfamiliar.
Someone from his past had survived.
And she had found him.
Lyra finally spoke.
“So…”
Both looked at her.
“You two really grew up together?”
Aria nodded.
“Yes.”
Aether added,
“We were childhood friends.”
Lyra smiled.
“I can tell.”
Aether raised an eyebrow.
“How?”
“You talk differently around her.”
Aether paused.
Aria's cheeks became slightly red.
“Do I?”
“Yes.”
Lyra smiled.
“Definitely.”
Aether looked away.
“We should get back to the cave.”
Aria picked up her broken spear.
Aether stopped her.
“Leave it.”
“I still need a weapon.”
“I'll make you one.”
Aria looked at him.
“You?”
Aether held up the Origin Blade.
“I have access to better materials now.”
She smiled.
“Still showing off.”
“I'm stating a fact.”
“You haven't changed.”
Aether looked at her.
Neither had she.
At least not where it mattered.
The three of them began walking toward the cave.
Nyx followed closely behind.
Aether's Origin System quietly displayed one final notification.
[Unique emotional resonance detected.]
[Infinite Origin Physique response: Unknown.]
[Future interaction may influence Origin Adaptation.]
Aether ignored the notification.
For once, he wasn't thinking about cultivation.
Or ancient weapons.
Or bloodline hunters.
He was thinking about the girl walking beside him.
The childhood friend he had believed was lost forever.
And somewhere deep inside—
Aether realized that his journey had just become much more complicated.
