Chapter 50 — The Eye in the North

The journey back to the cave was quiet.

Aether walked at the front, his expression thoughtful as the forest passed around him.

The inheritance had given him more questions than answers.

That wasn't necessarily a bad thing.

He had learned that the ancient Origin Heir inheritance was divided into layers, and the first layer had already recognized something fundamental about him.

It had also confirmed something else.

The ancient civilization that created the inheritance had expected the Origin Heir to eventually make a choice.

Aether wasn't interested in following a path simply because someone from the past had prepared it for him.

He would decide his own path.

Behind him, Lyra walked beside Aria while Nyx moved between them.

After several minutes, Lyra finally broke the silence.

"So... are you going to tell us what happened inside?"

Aether glanced back.

"The inheritance tested me."

"That's obvious."

"It asked me to identify what I am."

Aria's curiosity grew.

"And?"

"I told it that I'm Aether."

Lyra stared at him.

"That's it?"

Aether nodded.

"That's it."

Aria laughed softly.

"You really aren't interested in giving ancient mysteries the answers they want."

"I don't know enough about them to give them anything else."

Lyra considered that for a moment.

"Fair."

They continued walking.

Then Aether stopped.

Nyx immediately stopped with him.

Aria and Lyra noticed the change.

"What is it?" Aria asked.

Aether looked toward the northern horizon.

"I can feel something."

Lyra's expression became serious.

"From the north?"

"Yes."

His Origin Sense had always been useful, but this was different.

It wasn't simply detecting a powerful creature.

It was a faint fluctuation in the environment itself.

The Origin Energy around them had changed.

Barely.

Most cultivators wouldn't notice it.

But Aether could.

Something was disturbing the natural flow.

He opened his system.

[Environmental Origin Analysis.]

[Northern Origin Density: Increasing.]

[Change: 0.7%]

[Cause: Unknown.]

Aether frowned.

Only 0.7%.

Not enough to justify immediate action.

That was exactly why it bothered him.

Whatever was happening wasn't releasing overwhelming power.

It was doing something more subtle.

"Let's keep moving."

Lyra looked toward the north.

"Shouldn't we investigate?"

"Not yet."

Aether resumed walking.

"We just found an inheritance connected to the same region. Charging toward the first strange signal we detect would be careless."

Aria nodded.

Unauthorized use: this story is on Amazon without permission from the author. Report any sightings.

"Then we'll strengthen the base first."

"Exactly."

By the time they returned, the sun was beginning to descend.

The cave looked different from when they had left.

The formation around it had become nearly invisible.

A faint distortion covered the entrance, bending light just enough to make the cave blend naturally into the surrounding terrain.

Aether stepped inside.

The moment he crossed the formation boundary, the system activated.

[Home Territory recognized.]

Aether paused.

"Home Territory?"

[Temporary designation.]

[Current structure does not meet requirements for permanent territory.]

Aether smiled faintly.

"So you're already criticizing my house."

[Assessment is factual.]

Lyra laughed.

Aria shook her head.

"Your system really doesn't care about your feelings."

"That's one thing I like about it."

Aether walked deeper into the cave.

The central chamber had already begun taking shape.

The restored Ancient Origin Gathering Formation continued pulling Origin Energy from the surrounding region.

The energy was filtered before entering the cave, making the atmosphere far more stable.

Aether looked at the formation.

"How much has the density increased?"

[Origin Energy concentration: +18.4% since restoration.]

"Good."

He turned toward the eastern wall.

"The defensive formation?"

[Operational.]

[Detection range: 83 meters.]

[Concealment: Stable.]

[Minor defensive barrier: Stable.]

Aether nodded.

It wasn't enough.

But it was a beginning.

He wanted more than a cave.

He wanted a place that could eventually become a territory.

A place where he could cultivate without constantly worrying about someone discovering them.

A place capable of supporting people, beasts, resources, formations, and eventually an actual city.

But that required time.

And resources.

Neither could be rushed.

Aether sat down in the center of the chamber.

"I'll cultivate first."

Lyra raised an eyebrow.

"You just came back."

"I know."

"You've been fighting, exploring, and going through an ancient inheritance."

"I know."

"And you're still cultivating?"

Aether looked at her.

"I need another hundred Origin Points before Stage 5."

Lyra sighed.

"Of course."

Aria smiled.

"At least he's consistent."

Nyx curled up beside Aether.

The cave became quiet.

Aether began circulating his Origin Energy.

The Origin Gathering Formation responded.

Energy flowed toward him.

His cultivation remained stable.

[Origin Points: 200/300]

He didn't attempt to force a breakthrough.

Instead, he focused on strengthening his foundation.

Stage 4 was still new.

His body needed time to adapt.

The Infinite Origin Physique slowly absorbed the refined energy.

[Infinite Origin Physique: 0.39%]

The number remained unchanged.

Aether didn't mind.

The physique's growth wasn't supposed to be fast.

Every fraction represented something meaningful.

His attention shifted toward the Origin Heir's Seed.

A faint silver pattern now existed around his Origin Core.

It was barely visible.

But when Aether focused on it, a new interface appeared.

[Origin Inheritance Access.]

[Current Layer: Layer One.]

[Available Functions:]

[— Ancient Knowledge Archive: Locked.]

[— Origin Heir Techniques: Locked.]

[— Authority Transmission: Locked.]

[— Inheritance Trial Grounds: Available.]

Aether stared at the final option.

"Trial Grounds."

He didn't activate it.

Not yet.

Instead, he closed the interface.

There was no reason to rush into another unknown trial.

First, he needed to understand what he already possessed.

Several hours passed.

Night settled over the forest.

Lyra had begun cultivating.

Aria was practicing with Starfall outside the cave.

Her spear moved through the darkness with controlled precision.

Each thrust was cleaner than the last.

The growth-type weapon responded to her movements, faint starlike particles appearing along its edge.

Aether watched from the cave entrance.

[Starfall compatibility increasing.]

[Current compatibility: 91.3%]

Aria stopped.

"You've been watching."

"Your spear is adapting."

She looked at Starfall.

"It's easier to use than before."

"It should become stronger as you grow."

Aria smiled.

"Then I'll make sure it has a lot of growing to do."

Aether nodded.

"That's the right attitude."

A sudden tremor passed through the ground.

Aria immediately tightened her grip.

Aether's expression changed.

The formation around the cave flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then stabilized.

[Warning.]

[Long-range Origin fluctuation detected.]

Aether looked north.

This time, he didn't need Origin Sense.

The sky itself had changed.

A thin silver line appeared beyond the distant mountains.

It looked like a crack.

But it wasn't in the sky.

It was something behind the sky.

Lyra rushed out of the cave.

"What is that?"

Aether didn't answer immediately.

The silver crack slowly widened.

Then—

A single enormous eye appeared within it.

Silver.

Cold.

Ancient.

Watching the world below.

Nyx's forehead mark suddenly illuminated.

Aether's Origin Mark responded.

The Executioner's Blade began vibrating inside his grasp.

[Unknown observation source detected.]

[Analyzing...]

[Analysis failed.]

Aether's eyes narrowed.

"Again."

[Analysis failed.]

He stared at the eye.

It wasn't attacking.

It wasn't releasing killing intent.

It was simply watching.

Then a voice entered Aether's mind.

Not through sound.

Directly.

You have received the first layer.

Aether's grip tightened.

"Who are you?"

The eye remained still.

Not yet.

Aether's expression hardened.

"I don't like being watched."

For the first time, the eye seemed to react.

You will understand when the Northern Seal opens.

Aether immediately asked,

"What is sealed?"

No answer.

"What is the Watcher?"

Silence.

"What happened to the Origin Domain?"

Still nothing.

Aether's patience thinned.

"Then why contact me?"

The silver eye slowly closed.

Before disappearing, the voice returned.

Because something else has noticed you.

The eye vanished.

The crack in the sky disappeared with it.

The forest returned to normal.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Lyra looked at Aether.

"What did it mean?"

Aether remained focused on the northern mountains.

"I don't know."

Aria lowered Starfall.

"But it wasn't attacking us."

"No."

"Then maybe it's not an enemy."

Aether shook his head.

"Watching someone doesn't make them an enemy."

He paused.

"But it doesn't make them an ally either."

The distinction mattered.

Aether looked toward the cave.

"We're changing plans."

Lyra followed him.

"What now?"

"We strengthen the base."

Aria nodded.

"And after that?"

Aether glanced north.

"Then we investigate."

Nyx suddenly growled.

Aether looked down.

Her golden eyes were fixed on the northern darkness.

The silver mark on her forehead was still glowing.

Aether crouched beside her.

"You're sensing something?"

Nyx gave a low growl.

The system activated.

[Unknown Origin Beast reaction detected.]

[Cause: Northern Origin fluctuation.]

Aether stood.

Something in the north had noticed him.

The Watcher had confirmed it.

And now even Nyx could sense the change.

Aether looked at the cave behind him.

This place was still too small.

Too fragile.

If something powerful came from the north, hiding inside a cave would not be enough.

He needed walls.

He needed formations.

He needed resources.

And eventually—

a territory.

Aether looked at the dark forest surrounding them.

"Tomorrow, we start building."

Lyra smiled.

"Building what?"

Aether's gaze remained on the horizon.

"Our first real base."

Far beyond the mountains, something ancient moved beneath the earth.

A second silver eye opened.

Then another.

And somewhere deep beneath the northern land—

a seal cracked.

Just once.
