Xavier woke up Saturday morning with two things already decided.

The first acquisition today. The second tomorrow. No deliberating. No reviewing over the weekend the way he’d told Vincent. He’d managed to read both overviews Friday night between module five sections and had known within twenty minutes that both were clean and both were moving.

He checked the system before getting out of bed.

$8,792,194, he noted. Clean start.

He got up. Showered. Dark trousers. Clean shirt. Saturday. No suit, no Hale & Associates, just the hostel desk and the MacBook and whatever the morning produced.

He made coffee. Sat at the desk. Opened the first overview one more time. Not because he needed to review it again but because the habit of reading something properly before committing money to it was one he’d developed in his previous life out of necessity. When you had nothing every dollar had to count. You read everything twice. You questioned every number. You didn’t move until you were certain because there was no cushion underneath you if you were wrong.

Different balance now, he thought. Same habit.

Some things you kept regardless of how much the circumstances changed.

Commercial cleaning company, he noted. West side of Kenvale. Four employees. Two corporate contracts both with renewal history. Eight years operating. Asking price $380,000.

Clean, he thought. Straightforward. The kind of business that runs itself if the contracts hold and the contracts have held for eight years.

He called Patricia at 9AM.

She answered on the second ring.

"Sixth acquisition," he said. "Commercial cleaning company. $380,000. I want to move this morning."

"I’ll have the documents to you within the hour," she said.

"Good," he said. And hung up.

He ate breakfast while he waited. Mama Elizabeth had left something by the door. She’d started doing it on Saturday mornings without being asked, which he’d noticed and filed away as one of the things about this life that the balance sheet couldn’t capture.

He ate and cycled his morning donations quietly.

$9,472,194, he thought.

He looked at that number.

Nearly ten million, he thought. From a Saturday morning in a hostel room.

He looked at the investment portfolio tracker.

$2,660,000 of $3,000,000, he noted. $340,000 remaining. Tomorrow’s acquisition covers it with room to spare.

One more, he thought. Tomorrow. Then the quest completes.

He messaged Vincent.

Xavier: sixth acquisition processed. Moving on the seventh tomorrow morning.

Vincent responded in under a minute.

Vincent: Patricia will have Sunday documents ready by 8AM.

Xavier: good.

He put the phone down and leaned back.

$9,472,194, he thought again. Six businesses acquired. Investment portfolio at $2,660,000. Asset Rebound from the manufacturing company second payment still incoming Monday. He looked at the ceiling. And the quest completing tomorrow.

Close, he thought. Very close.

His phone buzzed. Amira.

Amira: module five. How far have you gotten.

Xavier looked at the message.

Module five, he thought. I read three sections last night between acquisition overviews. He picked up his coffee. Which is not the same as properly studying module five but is significantly better than not reading it at all.

Xavier: making progress

Amira: Xavier that means three sections

Xavier: it means making progress

Amira: it’s literally the same thing every time. You say something vague, I translate it, you confirm I’m right.

Xavier: you’re very good at translating

Amira: 😑 study. All of it. Today.

Xavier: I have an acquisition to process

Amira: you always have something. Study around it.

Xavier: yes sweetheart

Amira: Xavier

Xavier: Amira.

Amira: 😑😑 I’m sending you the module five practice questions. Answer them. All of them.

Xavier: noted

Amira: today Xavier. Not eventually. Today.

He put the phone down.

Practice questions incoming, he thought. On a Saturday. While sitting on nine and a half million and a quest that completes tomorrow.

He almost laughed.

Different life, he thought.

The practice questions arrived three minutes later. Forty two of them. Detailed. With marking criteria attached.

Of course she included marking criteria, he thought.

He opened the document and started working through them. Not reluctantly. Actually working through them. His previous life’s financial analyst brain had always been comfortable with structured problem solving and nutritional policy questions turned out to follow a similar logical framework once you understood the underlying principles.

I actually know this, he noted after the first fifteen questions. Amira’s notes are comprehensive enough that I know this.

He texted her.

Xavier: your notes are good

A brief moment.

Amira: I know. Keep going.

He kept going.

He finished the practice questions at 2PM. Ate lunch from another container Mama Elizabeth had left. He was going to have to address how she kept doing this without him asking because it was becoming genuinely concerning how well she fed him and sat back at the desk.

$9,472,194, he noted. Practice questions done. Module five covered. He set the pen down. Although let’s be honest — not like I’ll be the one sitting in that exam hall. He almost smiled. Someone else will be doing that part. I just needed to pass the time productively.

He looked at Amira’s marking criteria sheet still open on the desk.

She put in the work, he thought. Least I could do was actually read it.

He opened his banking app and cycled the remaining daily cap carefully. Keeping the $5,000 buffer. Donating the rest in clean controlled amounts.

$9,472,194, he noted. Cap hit. Clean Saturday.

He closed the MacBook and looked out the window at the quiet residential street below.

Tomorrow, he thought. Seventh acquisition. Quest completes. Main quest notification arrives.

And then, he thought. Whatever comes next.

He picked up his phone one more time.

He opened his contacts and found Selene’s number.

She’d called from the office line the first time. Professional cover. But when she texted to confirm the hostel visit she’d used her personal number. He’d saved it then without making a production of it. Just added the name and moved on.

The semester break is coming, he thought. After exams.

Maybe, he thought. Maybe it’s time to think about the holiday properly.

He put the phone down without sending anything.

Tomorrow first, he thought. Quest completion. Then the holiday.

One thing at a time.
