Xavier: coming in by 9AM.

Kelvin: I’ll believe it when I see it

Xavier: see you at 9.

Kelvin: 👀

He showered. Dressed in dark trousers and a clean shirt. No suit today, just a normal campus morning. Picked up the Panamera keys.

Mama Elizabeth was at her door.

She looked at him. Then at the keys.

"School today," he said before she could ask.

She nodded with the satisfaction of someone whose definition of a properly ordered life included regular school attendance and handed him a container without being asked.

"Thank you ma," he said.

He ate in the car and drove straight to campus.

He stopped briefly at a fuel station on the way. The tank was running lower than he liked.

He pulled into the campus car park at 8:55AM and killed the engine.

The campus car park at 8:55AM had the particular energy of a Friday morning that had already decided it was the end of the week and was acting accordingly. Students moving between buildings with the slightly reduced urgency of people who had calculated exactly how much effort the last day of the teaching week required.

Xavier walked through the gate.

Kelvin was waiting at the entrance to the Food and Nutrition block with the energy of someone who had arrived early specifically to witness this.

"You’re here," Kelvin said.

"I said 9AM," Xavier said.

"You’ve said things before," Kelvin said. "This is different. You’re physically present on campus on a Friday morning." He looked at Xavier with the expression of someone marking a historic occasion. "I want you to know I’m taking this seriously."

"Go inside Kelvin," Xavier said.

"I’m going," Kelvin said. Already moving. "But I want credit for this. Emotionally. Whatever kept you away for three days clearly got resolved and I want partial credit for the resolution through my consistent moral support via text message."

"The texts you sent were memes," Xavier said.

"Supportive memes," Kelvin said. And pushed through the door.

Amira was at her desk.

She looked up when Xavier sat down beside her. Looked at him properly. tThe particular read she gave him when she was assessing whether something had changed since the last time she saw him.

"You read the notes," she said.

"Checked them out this morning," he said. "They’re comprehensive."

"Of course they are," she said. Not arrogantly. Just accurately. She turned back to her tablet. "The exam covers modules three through seven primarily. Module five is the one most people underestimate."

"I’ll focus there," he said.

"You’ll focus everywhere," she said. "But start with five."

Xavier looked at her profile. The glasses. The tablet. The absolute certainty of someone who had already decided how this was going to go and had prepared accordingly.

She’s managing my exam preparation, he thought. Without being asked. Without making it a thing.

Just doing it.

He cycled a donation quietly under the desk.

Clean and realistic — a donation makes sense to process quietly during a lecture. Ready to continue whenever you are. What’s the next Chapter?

The first lecture started at 10AM. Mrs. Adeyemi. Food systems and nutritional policy. A module Xavier had attended exactly twice since September.

He sat in his usual seat. Opened Amira’s notes to the corresponding section. Followed along.

I actually know this, he thought after fifteen minutes. The notes are good enough that the lecture is reinforcement rather than introduction.

He glanced at Amira beside him.

She was already taking new notes without looking up.

Four months of this, he thought. She’s been doing this for four months.

After the lecture Kelvin appeared at Xavier’s elbow with the energy of someone who had been waiting for an appropriate moment and had decided this was it.

"Okay," Kelvin said. "I need to say something."

"Say it," Xavier said.

"You’ve look different today ," Kelvin said. You actually sat through an entire Mrs. Adeyemi lecture and you were actually present for it." He looked at Xavier with genuine curiosity underneath the usual performance. "Something shifted."

Something shifted, Xavier thought. Seven million in the account. Three businesses acquired. A financial crime firm partnership. A manufacturing company mid acquisition. Selene at 35% favorability. Amira’s research partnership approved. He looked at Kelvin. Something shifted several times actually.

"Exams are coming," Xavier said.

"That’s not what I meant," Kelvin said.

"I know," Xavier said. "But it’s the answer you’re getting."

Kelvin pointed at him. Accepted it. Moved on.

They ate lunch in the cafeteria. Xavier, Amira, Kelvin. The usual arrangement that had stopped requiring formal invitation months ago.

Xavier cycled through his daily spending during the meal. Donations processed smoothly. The cap filling steadily.

"You’re on your phone," Amira said.

"Briefly," he said.

"You’re always briefly on your phone," she said. "It adds up."

"It does," he agreed.

She looked at him sideways. "Xavier."

"Amira."

"The exam is in two weeks," she said. "Module five. Promise me you’ll actually study it."

"I promise," he said.

She held his gaze for a moment. The expression that had replaced mixed feelings entirely. Warm, certain, the particular look of someone who had long since stopped trying to categorise what they were looking at.

"Good," she said. And went back to her food.

She got me to promise, he thought. Which means she’ll follow up. Which means I actually have to study module five.

The things this woman gets away with, he thought.

$7,842,194, he noted. Cap nearly hit. Kept $5,000 aside just in case. He thought about last night’s dinner. Lesson learned.

Asset Rebound landed this morning. Campus day done.

He walked back to the Panamera at 4PM with Kelvin beside him who had apparently decided the car park was also part of his Friday afternoon schedule.

Kelvin saw the Panamera and stopped walking.

"Every time," Kelvin said quietly. "Every single time I see that car I have a small moment."

"Go home Kelvin," Xavier said.

"I’m going," Kelvin said. "I just need the moment first."

Xavier got in and started the engine.
