Chapter 5240: Veiled Causal Site III
Chapter 5240: Veiled Causal Site III
The halls of THE Terminus Citadel ran obsidian-gold, every surface carrying the Mortis Cause light through its geometric seams with the abundance of a Cause that had stopped distinguishing between the material it moved through and the material it was.
Noah floated through them behind Evangelina’s delegation and watched.
The outer halls were populated with Ordovician Paleozoic Scale Gilded Ones attending to the administrative functions of a facility in active use, their auras pressing against his perception in accumulated weight rather than individual intensity. Deeper in, distributed through the secondary corridors in clusters of two and three, the Silurian Paleozoic Scale Gilded Ones appeared.
Too many.
One Silurian Ragnar had ripped him apart without particular effort. The number of beings at equivalent standing moving through these halls with the easy confidence of beings at comfortable baseline was a number he did not attempt to make specific. He simply noted its size and kept walking.
Dietrich’s eyes found him twice across two hallways.
Noah looked ahead and maintained the expression of an innocent man, which he was, essentially, in all the ways Dietrich could currently verify!
The foot traffic thinned as the procession moved deeper. Corridors that had carried continuous movement gave way to corridors carrying occasional movement, then none, then a shimmering obsidian barrier filling the full width of the final corridor from floor to ceiling, its surface rippling with the slow motion of something enforcing entry conditions rather than simply blocking passage.
Three massive titanic Gilded Ones at THE Silurian Paleozoic Scale burning with Ira stood aside as they came closer.
Evangelina walked through without slowing.
Noah stepped through after Adelheid and felt the single step cover more distance than it had any business covering, the barrier not separating two corridors but two scales of space.
He stopped.
The domain on the other side was vast. Inky obsidian in every direction without visible boundary, dense rather than empty, pressing against perception with the weight of a space built to contain something rather than accommodate anyone. No walls. No ceiling. No floor. Just the dark, and at the far end of it, the Obsidian Wall!
It floated in the deep distance with the presence of something permanent, a massive structure of compressed obsidian-gold carrying Mortis Cause saturation so thorough that the Wall itself read less as an object and more as the Cause made physically solid. The gold threading its surface pulsed in the slow rhythm that Noah had already learned to associate with a Prime Cause breathing through what it occupied.
He almost cursed.
Between their position and the Wall, in a guard formation calculated to cover every approach vector, were the Ragnars.
Five hundred of them!
He counted twice. Same number. Five hundred Silurian Paleozoic Scale bodies in the same face, same proportions, each one carrying a density that exceeded the Ragnars from THE Wandering Territories, beings for whom standing between something important and anything approaching it was not a task assigned but an orientation built in.
At their head, one Ragnar larger than the rest.
Noah’s perception touched its foundations and came back with an assessment that sat in a different category than anything he had encountered since entering THE Braneworld.
Devonian Paleozoic Scale. The third and last tier of THE Third Scale of Existence. Three more like it at different cardinal positions around the Wall, each covering a separate approach angle. Four Devonian bodies as the primary layer above the five hundred Silurian ones, obsidian-gold and brutal-smiled and carrying the compound authority of Prime Cause integrations that had been running long enough to become structural rather than accessed.
He absorbed this.
And then felt something further back.
It sat in the deep dark behind the Wall, concealed well enough that most perception directed at it would pass over it. Noah’s Hadean Skull and THE Infinite Tongue’s passive field reached past the concealment and found a presence operating above Devonian.
At the transitional stage between THE Third Scale and THE Fourth Scale, or already beyond it and looking down from there. A single concealed being behind five hundred Silurian Ragnars and four Devonian ones, the actual reason this Wall was treated with the importance it received.
Noah kept his face arranged around mild interest.
Evangelina’s delegation moved toward the Wall. The Devonian Ragnar at the head watched the incoming group with the brutal smile his copies all wore, holding position as the procession entered the domain’s open space.
A second group was already present.
Noah saw Sarees. Crimson-gold, jeweled, the kind worn by beings who understood that how they occupied significant spaces was itself communication. Noah looked at them and thought briefly of Prabhavati, who had worn similar and who was currently in a much better place.
Evangelina’s expression shifted by a degree he had learned to read.
"I did not expect THE Maharanis House to be represented in this round, Sororis Prima Pritta"
The Sororis Prima at the center of the saree-adorned group smiled and let the smile deliver what she wanted it to deliver before she spoke.
"Sororis Prima Evangelina..." She offered the introduction with the ease of someone who did not need introductions to establish standing, only offered them as courtesy.
"The powers above granted us entry alongside THE Ubergulden House. Our House’s recently engineered glory impressed THE Ealdor Gilded Ones sufficiently to authorize his inclusion in this round."
She turned slightly.
"I present to you. Arjun."
Noah looked.
The Gilded One floating several meters behind Pritta’s delegation did not perform his composure. He held it the way people held things that had always simply been true about them, his bearing that of a being who had never needed to negotiate with the concept of an equal because the concept had never been relevant to his experience.
Superbius moved through him like oxygen through blood, present and automatic. His age read as young by Gilded standards in the surface configuration of his features, but his foundations told a different story- three Prime Cause integrations, possibly four, each running at depth, and beneath them something Noah’s Pillow Talk reached for and returned without a clean classification.
One glance at him communicated everything about his standing without the glance’s subject acknowledging it was being taken.
Dietrich frowned.
Pritta’s attention moved to him with her smile still in place.
"Your side has the somewhat exceptional Dietrich. I even heard his little sister made her resurgence?" She let the curiosity sit pleasantly in the air. "Was it Adelheid? Do you think they will be able to survive a place filled with the terrors of THE Primordial Source and make any real contributions to our glory?"
...!
Noah stood let his eyes drift past the exchange toward the Wall.
The political architecture had clarified quickly. THE Ubergulden House and THE Maharanis House were cooperating on the surface of the broader project and actively competing beneath it, each measuring their contribution against the other’s, each fielding their strongest available participants in whatever the Wall led to.
Arjun was THE Maharanis contribution. Adelheid and Dietrich were THE Ubergulden’s. And Noah, in his borrowed identity, was the Custos attached to the Ubergulden entry, which meant his performance on the other side of that Wall would reflect on a House he had every intention of quietly dismantling from within.
He stored this and let his attention complete its drift toward the Wall itself.
The threads of the Mortis Cause moved through the air of this domain at a concentration that exceeded anything in the outer halls, exceeding even the Sanctum Velanthra’s Dreamstone-adjacent density by a margin he could feel but not measure. He had needed physical contact with a Dreamstone to access the Bellum and Cognitio Causes. Physical crystallization of the Cause’s presence as the entry point for comprehension!
