Infinite Cashback: My Wealth Rebate System
Chapter 103: 103 | Ideas
Jason read the system notification twice.
[Build a relationship structure capable of surviving the truth.]
He almost laughed. "Relationship structure?"
Sarah looked at him. "What?"
Jason immediately locked his phone. "Nothing."
She narrowed her eyes. "You've been saying that a lot lately."
Jason smiled. "Maybe I have."
Vivian glanced between them. "Are you two always like this?"
"Unfortunately," Sarah answered immediately.
Jason nodded. "She's the annoying one."
"I'm annoying?"
"Very."
Sarah grabbed a napkin and threw it at him. Jason caught it, and Vivian laughed. The tension that had filled the room only minutes ago eased slightly, but Jason couldn't forget the system's objective. There was still a quest running. Five days. And whatever "relationship structure" meant, he had a feeling the system wasn't going to let them sit around and hope everything worked out.
Sarah began eating. "So."
Jason looked at her. "So?"
"We need rules."
Vivian stopped eating. "Rules?"
Sarah nodded. "Yes. Rules for this." She gestured between the three of them. "If we're really going to try this."
Vivian looked uncomfortable. "I'm not sure we can make rules for feelings."
"We can't," Sarah said with a smile. "But we can make rules for behavior."
Jason nodded slowly. That made sense.
Sarah looked at Vivian. "First rule: no secrets."
Vivian nodded. "Agreed."
Sarah looked at Jason. "That includes you."
Jason raised his hands. "Fair."
"Second." Sarah thought for a moment. "Nobody uses jealousy to manipulate anyone."
Vivian nodded. "Agreed."
Jason nodded too. "Definitely."
"Third..." Sarah hesitated. "Nobody makes promises they don't intend to keep."
The room grew quieter. Jason understood why she had said that. Promises were becoming dangerous.
Vivian nodded. "I agree."
Jason looked at Sarah. "I do too."
Sarah leaned back. "Good."
Vivian looked thoughtful. "Can I add one?"
Sarah smiled. "Sure."
"If one of us becomes uncomfortable, we say it immediately."
Sarah nodded. "That's actually good."
Jason looked between them. "Anything else?"
Vivian shook her head, but Sarah thought for a moment before smiling. "Yeah."
"What?"
"Nobody gets to pretend everything is fine when it isn't."
Jason laughed. "That sounds like it's directed at me."
"It is."
"Fair."
They continued eating, and for several minutes the conversation shifted to ordinary things: school, classes, the upcoming semester, and plans for the weekend. But beneath everything was a new awareness. They had established rules—not a solution, just boundaries. Jason knew that, and somehow it made him feel better. He didn't need to solve everything tonight. He only needed to make sure nobody was lying.
His phone vibrated.
Jason glanced down.
[Phase Three Progress: 17%.]
He stared. Another seven percent. He hadn't expected that. The system was rewarding the conversation. Apparently, creating boundaries counted.
Jason locked his phone, but Vivian noticed. "You really are checking that thing a lot."
Jason smiled. "I get a lot of messages."
"From who?"
"People."
She rolled her eyes. "Very specific."
Sarah laughed. "He's hopeless."
Jason leaned back. "You're both bullying me."
"Good," Sarah said.
The afternoon slowly became evening. Vivian eventually stood. "I should go."
Sarah nodded. "Okay."
Vivian picked up her bag. Jason stood as well. "I'll walk you down."
Vivian immediately shook her head. "No."
Jason paused. "No?"
She smiled. "I can walk myself."
Sarah looked at her.
"One of our rules," Vivian continued.
Jason understood. No unnecessary situations. No creating opportunities that could make things harder. He nodded. "Okay."
Vivian smiled. "See you tomorrow."
"See you."
She looked at Sarah. "Thanks."
Sarah smiled. "For what?"
"For today."
Sarah nodded. "You're welcome."
Vivian left, and the door closed behind her. Silence filled the apartment. Jason looked at Sarah, and she looked back before smiling.
"You survived."
Jason laughed. "Barely."
She walked toward him. "Come here."
Jason stepped closer, and she wrapped her arms around him. He hugged her. Neither spoke until, after several seconds, Sarah whispered, "Are you okay?"
"Yeah."
"Really?"
Jason nodded. "I'm okay."
Sarah pulled back and studied his face. "Good. I was scared today."
Jason looked at her. "Me too."
"But I think we did something good."
Jason smiled. "Yeah."
Sarah leaned against him. "Do you still love me?"
Jason didn't hesitate. "Yes."
Her eyes softened. "Good."
She rested her head against his chest, and Jason held her. For a moment, everything felt simple again. Then Sarah suddenly asked, "Do you think Vivian is going to be okay?"
Jason thought about it. "I think so."
"She looked nervous."
"She was."
Sarah sighed. "I don't want her to suffer because of us."
Jason looked down at her. "You're thinking about her too."
Sarah smiled. "I can't help it."
"You've always been like that."
"Don't make me sound noble."
"You are."
"Shut up."
Jason laughed, and Sarah punched his chest lightly. Then she became quiet.
"There's something I haven't told you."
Jason waited.
"I don't know what our relationship is going to look like in a month."
He nodded. "Neither do I."
"But I want to find out."
Jason smiled. "So do I."
She looked up at him. "Together?"
"Together."
Sarah smiled. "Good."
His phone vibrated. Jason glanced at it.
[Phase Three Progress: 24%.]
He frowned. The system had progressed again, and he hadn't even noticed. Then another message appeared.
[Requirement approaching.]
[Phase Three Emotional Stability: 25%.]
Jason stared. What happened at twenty-five percent?
Before he could investigate, Sarah spoke. "You're doing it again."
Jason looked up. "What?"
"Thinking."
He smiled. "Sorry."
"You don't have to apologize." She took his hand. "Just don't disappear into your head."
Jason nodded. "I'll try."
They spent another hour together. Eventually, Jason left. The walk home felt different. He wasn't carrying the same anxiety as the previous night. There was still uncertainty, but uncertainty no longer felt like disaster.
When he reached his apartment, he checked the system.
[Temporary Quest.]
[Phase Three Progress: 24%.]
[Time Remaining: 4 Days, 21 Hours, 03 Minutes.]
Jason frowned. "Why hasn't it moved?"
He waited, but nothing happened. He sat on his bed. Maybe twenty-four percent was the limit until something else happened.
He opened his contacts and stared at the two names: Sarah and Vivian. He wasn't going to force anything. That was one of their rules.
He placed the phone down. Then it vibrated.
Vivian.
Vivian: Are you home?
Jason: Yeah.
Vivian: Can I ask you something?
Jason: Sure.
There was a long pause.
Vivian: Did today make things easier for you?
Jason thought carefully.
Jason: A little.
Vivian: For me too.
Jason smiled.
Jason: That's good.
Vivian: But there's something bothering me.
Jason: What?
Vivian: I keep wondering whether you only agreed to all this because you felt responsible.
Jason stared at the message. It was a fair question.
Jason: I agreed because I wanted to.
Vivian: Are you sure?
Jason: Yes.
Vivian: Even if the system—
Jason froze. He stared at the screen. The message had stopped there. She hadn't actually mentioned the system. Maybe it had been a typing mistake. Maybe she was about to say something else.
Then another message appeared.
Vivian: Even if the situation becomes harder?
Jason exhaled.
Jason: Yes.
Vivian: Okay.
Another pause.
Vivian: I believe you.
Jason smiled.
Vivian: Goodnight.
Jason: Goodnight.
He put the phone away. The system immediately appeared.
[Phase Three Progress: 27%.]
Jason sat upright. "Seriously?"
Three percent from that conversation. He stared at the notification, then another appeared.
[Trust between Host and Secondary Relationship increased.]
Jason's expression became complicated. He didn't know whether he should be pleased. The system was turning every emotional change into progress, and he wasn't sure he liked that. But he couldn't deny one thing: the relationships were changing, not because of the system, but because of them.
Jason went to sleep.
---
The next morning began normally until Jason received a message from Sarah.
Sarah: We need to talk.
Jason's eyes opened fully.
Jason: About what?
Sarah: Something happened.
Jason sat up.
Jason: What happened?
The typing indicator appeared, disappeared, then returned.
Sarah: Vivian got into an argument with someone at school.
Jason frowned.
Jason: Who?
Sarah: I don't know yet.
Jason immediately got out of bed.
Jason: Is she okay?
Sarah: Yes.
Jason: Where is she?
Sarah: She won't tell me.
Jason's expression hardened.
Jason: I'm coming over.
Sarah: Okay.
He got dressed quickly. When he arrived at Sarah's apartment, she opened the door almost immediately.
"Where is she?"
Sarah pointed toward the couch. Vivian was sitting there, her expression unusually quiet.
Jason walked toward her. "What happened?"
Vivian looked up. "Nothing."
Sarah immediately said, "That's a lie."
Vivian sighed. "I said I'm fine."
Jason sat opposite her. "Who was it?"
Vivian hesitated. "A guy from school."
"Why?"
"Does it matter?"
Jason's expression hardened. "Yes."
Vivian looked away. "He made a comment."
"What kind of comment?"
She hesitated. "About me."
Sarah sat beside her. "What did he say?"
Vivian remained silent. Jason could see that she was embarrassed, so he didn't push. Instead, he asked, "Did he hurt you?"
"No."
"Did he threaten you?"
"No."
"Then what happened?"
Vivian sighed. "He asked me out."
Jason blinked. Sarah looked confused. "That's it?"
Vivian shook her head. "I rejected him."
"Then?"
"He got angry."
Jason's expression darkened. "He insulted you?"
"Yeah."
"Then what?"
Vivian looked at him. "I insulted him back."
Sarah stared. "You did?"
Vivian nodded. "He deserved it."
Jason almost smiled. "Good."
Vivian looked surprised. "You don't think I should have?"
"I wasn't there." He shrugged. "But if someone insults you because you rejected them, he deserved whatever answer you gave him."
Vivian smiled faintly. "Thanks."
Sarah sighed. "That's not why I told him."
Jason looked at her. "Then why?"
Sarah hesitated. "Because he knows about you."
Jason's expression changed. "What?"
Vivian looked down. "He saw us together yesterday."
Jason's mind immediately started working. "What does he know?"
"That we're friends."
"Only that?"
Vivian nodded. "I think."
Jason relaxed slightly, but Sarah added, "He asked Vivian if you were her boyfriend."
Jason looked at Vivian. She looked uncomfortable.
"What did you say?"
Vivian hesitated. "I said no."
Jason nodded. "Okay."
"But..." Vivian looked at him. "He didn't believe me."
Jason frowned. "Why?"
Vivian looked away. "Because apparently he saw the way I looked at you."
Silence settled over the room.
Sarah sighed. "That's what I was worried about."
Jason leaned back. This wasn't a system quest. This was real life. Someone outside their little circle had noticed, and if other people started noticing, the situation could become much harder to control.
Jason's phone vibrated. He looked down.
[Phase Three Progress: 28%.]
He frowned. The system had registered the development. Another notification appeared.
[External Variable Detected.]
Jason's eyes narrowed.
[Third-party interest in Secondary Relationship.]
Then:
[Potential interference detected.]
Jason's expression became serious. The system wasn't only tracking Sarah and Vivian anymore. Someone else had entered the equation.
He locked the phone. Sarah noticed his expression. "What?"
Jason looked at her. "Nothing."
She narrowed her eyes. "You really need a new word."
Jason smiled. "Probably."
Vivian looked between them. "What?"
Sarah sighed. "He's thinking again."
Vivian smiled. "He's always thinking."
Jason looked at both of them. Then his phone vibrated once more.
He checked it.
[New Condition.]
[Host must not interfere with the Third Party.]
Jason's smile disappeared.
Another line appeared.
[Secondary Relationship must resolve the situation independently.]
Jason slowly lowered the phone. The system had given him the same instruction as before: don't interfere. Let Vivian choose. Let Vivian handle it.
But this time, there was a third person involved, and Jason didn't know what would happen if that person pushed too far.
Vivian suddenly stood. "I'm going back to school."
Sarah looked at her. "Today?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
Vivian picked up her bag. "Because I'm not hiding."
Jason looked at her. "Are you sure?"
She nodded. "I am."
Sarah stood too. "Do you want me to come?"
Vivian shook her head. "No." She smiled. "I need to handle this myself."
Jason watched her. There was something different about her now. She wasn't running away or asking Jason to solve the problem. She had made a decision—her own decision.
Vivian walked toward the door, then stopped and looked back at Jason. "Wish me luck."
Jason smiled. "Good luck."
She looked at Sarah.
"To both of you."
Sarah smiled. "You've got this."
Vivian nodded, then left. The door closed.
Jason remained silent. Sarah looked at him. "You wanted to go after her."
"Yeah."
"But you didn't."
Jason shook his head. "She asked us not to."
Sarah smiled. "Good."
Jason looked at the door. He didn't like it. Every instinct told him to make sure Vivian was safe, but he had agreed to something. No interference. If Vivian wanted to handle it herself, he had to respect that.
His phone vibrated.
[Phase Three Progress: 30%.]
Jason's eyes widened. The threshold had been reached again.
[Emotional Decision Threshold reached.]
[Secondary Relationship independence confirmed.]
Then:
[Phase Four will begin upon completion of the next condition.]
Jason stared at the message. The system wasn't finished—not even close. Judging from the way the notifications were appearing, Phase Four was going to be different.
Sarah looked at him. "What is it?"
Jason locked the phone. "Nothing."
Sarah laughed. "You really need to stop saying that."
Jason smiled. "Maybe."
She walked toward the kitchen. "I'm making coffee."
Jason followed.
For the first time, neither of them realized that the real danger wasn't Vivian's feelings. It was what happened when other people started noticing them.
And somewhere across town, Vivian was walking back into the school building alone. She had no idea that her next decision would determine the direction of everything that came after.
