Infinite Cashback: My Wealth Rebate System
Chapter 102: 102 | Finally
Jason's chest tightened.
"And?"
She looked at him.
"I think I should leave."
Jason's expression changed.
"What?"
"I mean..."
She looked away.
"Not leave the city."
"I know."
"I just mean I should stop being around you so much."
Jason stared at her.
"That's your answer?"
"I don't know."
Vivian's voice became quieter.
"But it might be the safest one."
Jason shook his head.
"Safe for who?"
She looked at him.
"Sarah."
"And you?"
Vivian didn't answer.
That silence was answer enough.
Jason leaned back slightly, studying her face. She looked tired. Not physically tired, but exhausted from fighting with herself.
"You'd be miserable."
"Maybe."
"And you'd still have feelings."
"I know."
"Then what does leaving actually solve?"
Vivian looked down.
"It keeps me from acting on them."
Jason was silent.
He understood what she meant. If she disappeared, there would be fewer opportunities. Fewer private conversations. Fewer moments where emotions could get ahead of reason.
It was logical.
And somehow, that made it worse.
He looked at her.
"Do you want to leave?"
Vivian looked up.
"No."
The answer came immediately.
Jason stared at her.
Vivian seemed surprised by how quickly she'd answered too.
"No," she repeated, quieter this time. "I don't want to."
She took a breath.
"But wanting something doesn't mean you should have it."
Jason looked away.
That sentence stayed with him.
There was something painfully mature about it. Vivian wasn't pretending her feelings didn't exist. She was simply acknowledging that feelings didn't automatically give someone the right to act on them.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Jason's phone vibrated.
He checked it.
[Quest Progress: 28%.]
Jason's eyes widened.
Two percent.
Just from that conversation.
His thumb hovered over the screen for a moment before he locked it again.
The system was approaching the thirty-percent threshold.
Vivian noticed.
"System?"
Jason's heart skipped.
"No."
She gave him a suspicious look.
"You keep doing that."
"Doing what?"
"Checking your phone whenever things get serious."
Jason smiled.
"Bad habit."
She didn't look convinced.
"You know you're terrible at lying, right?"
"I've been told."
"By Sarah?"
"Among other people."
Vivian almost smiled.
Before she could say anything else, Sarah returned.
"Sorry."
She looked between them.
"Did I miss something?"
Jason shook his head.
"No."
Vivian smiled faintly.
"Nothing."
Sarah stared at them.
"You two are terrible liars."
Jason laughed.
"Apparently everyone thinks so."
Sarah smiled.
"Let's go."
They started walking again, but the mood had changed.
The conversation had left something hanging between Jason and Vivian, something neither had finished saying.
Neither of them brought it up again.
Eventually, they returned to Sarah's apartment in the afternoon.
Sarah put the shopping bags down.
"I'm tired."
Vivian dropped onto the couch.
"Me too."
Jason sat in the chair, stretching his legs.
Sarah looked around the apartment.
"We actually had a good day."
Vivian nodded.
"Yeah."
Sarah smiled.
"See?"
Jason looked at her.
"See what?"
"We can do this."
Jason wasn't sure what she meant by "this."
The three of them spending time together?
Pretending everything was normal?
Trying to find some strange balance none of them had figured out yet?
Still, he smiled.
"Maybe."
Sarah pointed at him.
"Don't ruin the moment."
He laughed.
The tension eased slightly.
For a while, they talked about ordinary things. The shopping, the places they'd visited, something funny Sarah had seen earlier. It almost felt like a normal afternoon between three friends.
Almost.
Then Sarah stood.
"I'm going to make something to eat."
Vivian stood immediately.
"I'll help."
Sarah smiled.
"Come on."
They disappeared into the kitchen.
Jason remained alone in the living room.
The moment they were gone, the smile faded from his face.
His phone vibrated.
He checked it.
[Quest Progress: 29%.]
He stared at the number.
One percent away.
Then the system window changed.
[Emotional Decision Threshold: 30%.]
[Current Progress: 29%.]
[Next meaningful emotional decision will unlock the objective.]
Jason slowly lowered the phone.
A strange feeling settled over him.
He didn't want to trigger it.
Not yet.
Because he knew that once the next objective appeared, things would become much harder.
He had gotten used to quests that gave him something concrete to accomplish. Spend money. Complete a task. Reach a certain point.
This felt different.
This one was connected directly to people's emotions.
And there was no way to predict what the system would demand next.
From the kitchen came the sound of Sarah laughing.
Then Vivian laughed too.
Jason looked toward them.
For a moment, everything sounded normal.
Almost peaceful.
Then he heard Vivian say something, her voice quieter.
"I've been thinking."
Sarah's laughter stopped.
"What about?"
There was a pause.
Then Vivian answered.
"About Jason."
Jason's body went still.
His eyes instinctively turned toward the kitchen.
He couldn't hear the rest clearly.
For half a second, he considered standing.
He could walk closer.
He could listen.
He could find out what Vivian was about to say.
But he stopped himself.
No.
He shouldn't listen.
Whatever happened next had to be their choice.
Not his interference.
Not the system's manipulation.
Just theirs.
Jason sat back down.
He stared at his phone, though the screen was already dark.
For once, he didn't want information.
He wanted them to make their decision without him controlling the situation.
A few minutes later, Sarah and Vivian returned.
Sarah was carrying three plates, and Vivian followed behind her.
They sat down.
Nobody mentioned the conversation.
Jason looked at Vivian.
She avoided his eyes.
Sarah noticed.
Her expression became thoughtful.
She looked from Vivian to Jason, as though she could feel the tension even without knowing exactly what had been said.
Then she said quietly:
"There's something we need to settle."
Jason's phone vibrated.
He didn't need to check it.
He already knew.
The system had finally reached its threshold.
Still, he looked down.
[Quest Progress: 30%.]
[Emotional Decision Threshold reached.]
[New Objective unlocked.]
Jason's heart sank.
The next line appeared.
[Temporary Quest — Phase Three.]
[Objective: Allow Vivian to make a decision without interference.]
Jason's eyes narrowed.
That wasn't what he expected.
Another line appeared.
[Host must not influence the decision.]
Then:
[Host must accept the outcome.]
Jason stared at the screen.
For the first time, the system wasn't asking him to do something.
It was asking him to do nothing.
Somehow, that was much harder.
His fingers tightened around the phone.
Doing nothing meant accepting whatever happened.
Even if the outcome was something he didn't want.
He locked his phone.
Sarah looked at him.
"What is it?"
Jason looked at her, then Vivian.
He took a slow breath.
"Nothing."
Vivian's eyes met his.
This time, she seemed to understand that something had changed.
She didn't ask.
Sarah looked between them.
Then she spoke.
"Okay."
The three of them sat there.
The food remained untouched.
Nobody knew exactly what to say.
Finally, Vivian took a breath.
"I've made a decision."
Jason's fingers tightened around his phone.
Sarah looked at her.
"What decision?"
Vivian looked directly at Jason.
For the first time since all of this began, there was no uncertainty in her eyes.
"I think I need to tell you both the truth."
Jason's heart pounded.
Vivian swallowed.
"I'm not going to leave."
Sarah's expression changed.
Vivian continued.
"I'm not going to pretend I don't have feelings for him."
Jason remained completely still.
"But I'm also not going to ask him to choose me."
Sarah stared at her.
"Then what are you going to do?"
Vivian looked down.
"I'm going to stay."
She looked back at Jason.
"But I'm going to set my own boundaries."
Jason's expression softened slightly.
He hadn't expected that answer.
Not because it was easy, but because it wasn't.
Vivian wasn't running away.
She wasn't demanding that Jason choose her.
She was choosing to remain while accepting the reality of the situation.
Sarah was silent.
Vivian continued.
"I won't secretly meet him."
"I won't hide conversations from you."
"And I won't try to turn him against you."
She paused.
"But I'm also not going to disappear just because I'm scared."
Sarah slowly nodded.
"That's fair."
Vivian looked surprised.
"Really?"
"Really."
Sarah's voice remained calm.
"But I have one condition."
Vivian waited.
"If you stay..."
Sarah looked at Jason.
"...then none of us lies."
Vivian nodded.
"No lies."
Jason looked between them.
Something inside him finally loosened.
Maybe this was the sacrifice.
Not Vivian giving up Jason.
Not Sarah giving up her relationship.
But all three of them giving up the comfort of pretending this wasn't happening.
There was no perfect solution.
No magical way to erase Vivian's feelings.
No way for Sarah to suddenly stop being afraid.
No way for Jason to guarantee that nobody would get hurt.
But at least they were finally being honest.
Jason looked down at his phone.
The system notification was still there.
[Decision accepted.]
[Phase Three progress: 10%.]
Jason's eyes widened.
He hadn't done anything.
Vivian had made the decision herself, and the system had accepted it.
For a moment, Jason simply stared at the screen.
He had spent so much time worrying about what the system wanted him to do that he had forgotten something important.
Not every quest required him to take action.
Sometimes the hardest action was restraint.
He looked at Vivian.
She smiled faintly.
Then Sarah reached across the table and took Vivian's hand.
Vivian froze.
Her eyes dropped to their hands.
Sarah squeezed it once.
"We'll figure it out."
Vivian's eyes softened.
"Yeah."
Jason watched them.
For the first time, he wasn't standing between them.
He was sitting beside them.
The distinction felt strangely important.
Maybe that was what the system had been trying to teach him.
He couldn't control every outcome.
He couldn't make every problem disappear.
Sometimes the only thing he could do was give people enough room to choose for themselves.
And sometimes, trusting someone else's choice was harder than making the choice yourself.
His phone vibrated again.
[Temporary Quest.]
[Phase Three Objective Updated.]
Jason opened it.
[Build a relationship structure capable of surviving the truth.]
He stared at the words.
Relationship structure.
The wording alone made him frown.
Whatever the system meant by that, it clearly wasn't going to be simple.
Then another line appeared.
[Time Remaining: 5 Days, 01 Hours, 12 Minutes.]
Jason slowly smiled.
Five days.
That wasn't much time.
And somehow, he suspected the system had deliberately given him so little.
The quest was no longer about Vivian alone.
It was about all three of them.
Jason placed his phone on the table.
Sarah and Vivian were still holding hands.
Neither looked entirely comfortable.
Neither looked ready to walk away either.
For the first time, Jason had no idea whether the system considered that a victory...
or the beginning of something much more dangerous.
