Chapter 108: The Archive Meeting

"What would such support look like?" Serah asked.

"Political protection. Resource access. Formal alliance between the Guilds and the network your partner has established. The fracturing Guilds would publicly break from Crown authority on this issue. They would refuse to enforce the bounty. They would extend Guild protections to the individual in question."

"And the other four Guilds?"

Valerius’s jaw tightened. The air grew heavier. His Kinetic Tyrant Talent was leaking, kinetic energy in the room bending slightly toward him, an unconscious response to emotional stress.

"Crown-loyal. They follow the King’s lead."

He paused. The silence stretched. Through the communication crystal, Alvian could hear Serah’s heartbeat. Steady. Controlled. She was holding her composure like a blade, sharp and still.

"But if the King’s lead becomes politically untenable..." Valerius didn’t finish the sentence.

He didn’t need to.

’The four Crown-loyal Guilds will follow self-preservation if the King’s position becomes untenable. Valerius is telling me the Crown’s grip is weaker than it looks. The bounty is already dead in practice. If three Guilds break publicly, the other four might follow. Not out of principle. Out of survival.’

Valerius opened his book again. His eyes weren’t reading. They were fixed on a point somewhere in the middle distance, seeing something that wasn’t on the page. "The Commander’s position is complicated. Officially, I serve the Crown. Unofficially, I serve the stability of the kingdom. The Crown is making decisions that threaten that stability. The bounty on your partner is one such decision. The corruption in the Magistrate system is another. The failure to address dimensional infrastructure decay is a third."

’He’s not just desperate. He’s disillusioned. A man who believed in the system he served, watching that system fail. That’s different from a man who wants power. That’s a man who wants the system to work and has realized it can’t work as it currently exists.’

"There is one more matter," Valerius said. His voice dropped further, barely above a whisper. Serah had to lean slightly closer to hear him. "The Crown has been pressuring the Guilds to locate your partner. Not for arrest. For assessment. The King wants to know his capabilities, his weaknesses, his vulnerabilities. The intelligence the Crown has gathered is incomplete but concerning."

"What kind of intelligence?" Serah asked.

"Your partner’s Clearwater Talent has been reclassified three times in the past month. First as D-Rank Corrosive Water. Then as B-Rank Dissolution. Then as A-Rank Molecular Manipulation. The Crown’s analysts are arguing about whether to classify it as S-Rank. They can’t agree because the data keeps changing."

’They’re trying to put me in a box. The problem is I keep breaking out of the box. Every time they classify me, I evolve past the classification. That scares them more than the power itself. Unpredictability is more threatening than strength.’

"There is also the matter of the Royal Treasury breach," Valerius continued. "The Crown knows the Tears of the Phoenix were taken. They know the wards were bypassed. They don’t know how. The spatial locks were intact. There was no teleportation signature. The dissolution residue was unlike anything the Crown’s analysts have catalogued."

Serah turned another page. Her composure was flawless. "Theoretical research often produces unexpected results."

Valerius almost laughed. The sound that escaped him was more air than voice. "You’re very good at this."

"I’m a researcher. We’re trained to discuss theories without committing to applications."

"I’m a soldier. We’re trained to recognize when someone is being diplomatic instead of honest." He closed his book again. "I’ll be direct. The Crown is afraid. Not of your partner’s power. Of what his power represents. An E-Rank Talent that produces S-Rank results. A commoner who built a self-sustaining healing array in five days. A man who cannot be classified, cannot be controlled, and cannot be ignored."

He looked at Serah directly for the first time. His eyes were grey. Tired. Searching.

"The Crown will try to control him. If control fails, they will try to eliminate him. If elimination fails, they will try to discredit him. They have already begun the third approach. The extranet feeds that question his methods, that suggest his healing is a trick or a ploy, those are Crown-funded. The nobles who whisper that the healing array is dangerous, that it might dissolve patients instead of heal them, those whispers come from the palace."

’I know. I’ve seen the feeds. Hendricks flagged them three days ago. Manufactured dissent. The Crown can’t fight me physically so they’re fighting me narratively.’

"The fracturing Guilds offer an alternative," Valerius said. "Alliance. Protection. The political weight of three major Guilds standing between your partner and the Crown. In exchange for healing technology access and support for the corruption tribunal."

Serah closed her book. "I’ll convey your theoretical framework to my partner. He’ll be in touch."

The Commander nodded. He replaced his book on the shelf with the careful precision of a man who understood that every movement in this archive was being noted by the scholars around them.

"One more thing," he said. "Your partner should know that the Crown has dispatched two Level 60 Royal Knights to the Undercity. Not for arrest. For observation. They arrived yesterday. They’re watching the thirteenth level’s entrances."

’He’s warning me. A Commander in the Guild forces, warning a civilian about Crown surveillance. That’s not just political desperation. That’s a choice. He’s picked a side.’

"Thank you for the theoretical discussion," Serah said. "It was very informative."

She walked away. Her footsteps echoed in the crystalline silence of the archive, steady and unhurried. The scholars around her continued their research, oblivious to the political negotiation that had just occurred in their quiet sanctuary.

Valerius watched her go. Then he too walked away, disappearing into the stacks with the heavy steps of a man carrying the weight of a fracturing kingdom.

[DING!]

[Diplomatic engagement complete]

[Monitoring duration: 47 minutes]

[Key intelligence gained:]

[1. Three Guilds ready to break from Crown]

[2. Offer: Alliance in exchange for healing tech + tribunal support]

[3. Crown actively trying to discredit Host through extranet feeds]

[4. Two Level 60 Royal Knights deployed to Undercity for observation]

[5. Commander Valerius has chosen a side]

[Assessment: Offer is genuine. Valerius is sincere. Political window is open but narrow.]

[System note: The Host just conducted his first political negotiation through a proxy.]

[The Host’s approach: Listen, analyze, decide.]

Through the communication crystal, Alvian watched Serah exit the Guildhall and begin the walk back toward the Undercity. Her heartbeat was elevated. Her breathing was controlled. She was processing the conversation as she walked, her analytical mind sorting through every word and implication.

Alvian opened his eyes in Tobias’s hut.

"Well?" Tobias asked.

"The offer is genuine. Three Guilds want to break from the Crown. They want healing technology access and support for a corruption tribunal. In exchange, we get political protection, resource access, and formal alliance."

"What about the other four Guilds?"

"Crown-loyal. But Valerius says they’ll follow self-preservation if the King’s position becomes untenable. That’s not loyalty. That’s momentum."

"Anything else?"

"Two things. The Crown is funding a smear campaign against me on the extranet. Questioning the healing. Suggesting it’s a trick or dangerous."

Tobias’s mechanical arm sparked. "Expected. The Crown can’t fight you so they’re fighting the story. What’s the second thing?"

"Valerius warned us. Two Level 60 Royal Knights deployed to the Undercity. Observation only. They’re watching the thirteenth level entrances."

"He warned us." Tobias’s voice was flat. "A Guild Commander warned a fugitive about Crown surveillance."

"He’s picked a side."

"Has he? Or is he playing both sides and we’re the side he’s playing?"

’Good question. Tobias doesn’t trust easily. That’s why he’s alive. Valerius could be genuine. He could also be feeding us information to build trust while the Crown positions for something bigger. The Level 60 Knights could be observation. They could also be the first wave of something else.’

"We proceed carefully," Alvian said. "I’ll prepare a response for Valerius through back channels. Serah will be the contact point. But we don’t commit to the alliance until we’ve met the three Guild leaders individually. I want to look them in the eye before I trust them with the healing array technology."

"And the Knights?"

"Let them watch. The thirteenth level has nothing to see except Undercity residents going about their business. If they move from observation to action, I’ll know. And I’ll be ready."

Tobias nodded. His mechanical arm settled, the sparking subsiding. The old scavenger had survived twenty years in the Warrens by knowing when to push and when to wait.

"One more thing," Alvian said. "The smear campaign. Hendricks needs to counter it. Get the healed patients on the extranet. Real testimony. Real footage. Let the Crown’s manufactured doubt compete with two hundred and thirty-one people walking out of the medical wing whole."

"Already started," Tobias said. "Elara Voss volunteered this morning. She’s been giving interviews in the courtyard. The Guild delvers too. They’re not scripted. They’re just telling the truth."
