Chapter 105: Genesis in Practice, The Guard’s Return
The arm grew. Not like a plant growing, slow and organic. Like a construction, rapid and precise. Bone first, the humerus extending from the stump, then the radius and ulna, then the small bones of the wrist and hand. Muscles layered over bone, fiber by fiber. Tendons connected. Nerves threaded through. Essence pathways formed along the same channels the man’s Talent had used before the amputation.
Skin came last. Carbon-based integument, warm and alive, matching the man’s complexion.
100 Essence. 80. 60.
"Alvian." Serah’s voice was sharp. "Forty."
The last layer of skin sealed. The fingernails formed. The arm was complete.

The guard looked at his right arm. He flexed his fingers. They moved. He moved each finger individually, then together, then made a fist. He opened his hand and placed it flat against the healing platform.
He pressed down. The platform creaked.
"I can feel," he said. His voice was barely there. "I can feel the pressure. The temperature. The texture. I can feel everything."
He sat up. He held his new arm in his left hand, turning it, examining it. The skin was perfect. The Essence pathways were open. When he channeled his Talent, the arm glowed faintly with his energy signature.
"This is my arm," he said. "Not a prosthetic. Not a replacement. My arm."
"It always was," Alvian said. "The template was in your body. I just gave it the materials to rebuild."
The guard stood. He looked at Alvian with an expression that went beyond gratitude into something harder to name. Then he walked out of the healing chamber without another word.
Serah was staring at her pad. "The biological readings are indistinguishable from his original tissue. The Essence pathways are actually wider than his original ones. Your Genesis Forge didn’t just copy the template. It improved it."
"Is that going to be a problem?"
"That’s going to change everything." She looked up from the pad. "Alvian, you just regrew a limb. A complete, functional, living limb. From nothing. Do you understand what this means for medicine?"
’Yeah. It means there’s no such thing as permanent disability anymore. Not for anyone I can reach. Not for anyone who can get to the healing array.’
’Every noble family that’s been buying S-Rank healing resources for their injured heirs just lost their monopoly.’
’Every commoner who’s been told their injury is permanent just learned it isn’t.’
"Send in the next patient," he said.
Serah left. Alvian sat on the floor, his Essence at 40, his body trembling with fatigue. The central focus pulsed behind him, warm and steady.
’Genesis Forge. Create life from nothing. The System said the Golden Age could grow cities from seeds. If I can make an arm from Essence and molecular templates, what else can I make?’
’Weapons? No. I have enough weapons. I have too many weapons.’
’Tools. Infrastructure. The healing array. If I upgrade the central focus with Genesis Forge principles, the array won’t need me to operate. It can create replacement tissue on its own. Self-sustaining medical infrastructure.’
’The System mentioned Version 4.0. Sovereignty Tier. Creation that alters a region’s fundamental nature. If the array can heal without me, that’s not just a medical tool. That’s a transformation of how the Academy works. How the city works.’
He drank another Essence potion. Wendell Pike’s recipe still tasted like dissolved boot leather. He was beginning to think that was intentional.
The next patient walked in. A boy, maybe eight, whose legs had been crystallized since birth. Both legs. Grey and glassy from the hips down. The boy had never walked.
Alvian placed his hands on the boy’s legs. Genesis Forge hummed.
This would take everything he had left.
He began anyway.

The boy’s legs reformed. Crystal dissolved into component molecules. New bone grew. New muscle. New skin. New Essence pathways threading through tissue that had never existed in this boy’s body.
When it was done, the boy’s legs were warm. Pink. Alive.
Alvian slumped against the central focus. His Essence was at 3. His vision was blurring. Serah was calling his name from somewhere far away.
The boy moved his toes.
That was the last thing Alvian saw before his eyes closed.
’Two hundred patients in line. Maybe three hundred by tomorrow. And every one of them can be healed. Every one of them can be made whole.’
’But not today. Today I’m done.’
The leaf on the floor was still growing.

Alvian woke up on the healing chamber floor with Serah’s coat under his head and Tobias standing guard with a combat knife he hadn’t asked about.
"How long?" he asked.
"Six hours," Serah said. She was sitting against the wall, her pad in her lap, dark circles under her eyes. "Your Essence was at zero when you passed out. It’s at fifteen now. Regeneration rate is holding at 2.5 per minute."
"The boy?"
"Walked out on his own legs twenty minutes after you collapsed. His mother carried your unconscious body to the central focus and then went back to watching her son walk across the courtyard for the first time in his life."
’Twelve years old. Never walked. And now he can. Because I sat on a floor and turned Essence into legs.’
’The old Alvian, the one from the Awakening Ceremony, would have called this impossible. The new Alvian, the one with Genesis Forge and an Essence headache and a twelve-year-old walking on legs he built from nothing, calls it Tuesday.’
"The queue?" he asked.
Tobias answered from the doorway. "Still two hundred and thirty. More arriving every hour. The extranet picked up the arm regrowth footage somehow. Serah’s been fending off reporters."
"I didn’t film the arm regrowth," Serah said.
"Helen Croft’s security drones," Tobias said. "She’s been recording everything since day one. Says it’s for the Academy archives."
’Smart woman. Helen Croft has been preparing for the political fallout since I bisected her desk. She’s not just recording healing. She’s recording evidence that I’m too valuable to arrest.’
Alvian sat up. His Essence was at 19. Not enough for another Genesis Forge creation. Not enough for anything except sitting up and feeling sorry for himself.
"The array," he said. "I need to upgrade the central focus."
"You need to rest," Serah said.
"I need to upgrade the central focus. The Molecular Forge focus can only reformation tissue. The Genesis Forge focus can create tissue. If I rebuild it with biological-crystalline hybrid components, the array won’t need me to operate."
Serah looked up from her pad. "You’re talking about removing yourself from the healing process entirely."
"I’m talking about making healing permanent. Not dependent on whether I’m conscious. Not dependent on whether I’m alive."
’Not dependent on whether the Crown decides to arrest me. Not dependent on whether the Fate Enforcers come back.’
’That’s the point. The first condition for Version 4.0 is creation that sustains without ongoing Host input. If the array heals without me, that condition is met.’
She stood up. Her pad was already displaying schematics. "Then we start now. Your Essence is at 19. Not enough for Genesis Forge at full intensity. But enough for planning and molecular orientation. I’ll handle the circuitry design. You handle the molecular structure."
"I can do that."
Tobias cleared his throat. "I’ll handle making sure neither of you passes out from exhaustion. Again."
The rebuild took two days.
Not continuous work. Alvian’s Essence needed to regenerate between forging sessions. Serah needed to sleep between design iterations. Tobias needed to physically prevent both of them from working past their limits, which he did with the quiet authority of a man who had spent twenty years keeping delvers alive in tunnels that wanted to kill them.
Day four was prep. Alvian dissolved the original central focus and saved its molecular components for reintegration. The dimensional crystal, still saturated with three centuries of absorbed Essence, would form the inorganic backbone of the new focus. But the organic components needed to be created fresh.
He used Genesis Forge to create a biological lattice, a web of carbon-based organic molecules that would serve as the living component of the hybrid.
The lattice was modeled on plant cellular structure, optimized for Essence absorption and energy distribution.
