Chapter 336: The Chimera Toxic Core
Chapter 336: Chapter 336: The Chimera Toxic Core
The Captain of the Thousand Poison Pavilion stood at the center of the arena, his scythe dripping with venom, his eyes wild with desperation.
He knew he couldn’t beat Mio with conventional techniques.
So he reached into his robe and pulled out a black bone talisman.
The crowd gasped.
Grand Marshal Vane’s eyes narrowed, but he didn’t intervene. The talisman was forbidden in most sects, but the tournament rules didn’t explicitly ban it. Not yet.
The Captain crushed the talisman in his fist.
Dark energy exploded outward, wrapping around his body like a cocoon of living shadow.
His flesh rippled and bulged, scales pushing through his skin as his form twisted and mutated. His arms elongated into claws.
His legs thickened into pillars of muscle and bone.
And then the miasma came.
A wave of corrosive green gas erupted from his body, flooding the stage in seconds. It hissed and crackled as it ate away at the stone floor, leaving pitted craters in its wake.
The crowd recoiled.
Mio stood her ground, the Voidpiercer Bow humming in her hands. She nocked an arrow, her eyes locked on the mutated form of the Captain.
He was no longer human.
He was a chimera, a fusion of man and swamp beast, his body covered in thick, scaly hide that seemed to pulse with the miasma itself.
Mio fired.
The arrow streaked through the air, phasing through the miasma shield and striking the Captain’s chest.
It didn’t penetrate.
The arrow lodged in his scales, cracking the outer layer but failing to reach the flesh beneath. The Captain roared and swiped a massive claw at Mio, forcing her to dodge.
She rolled, came up firing another arrow.
The miasma thickened.
It curled around her bowstring, hissing as it made contact with the material. The string began to smoke, the fibers weakening under the corrosive assault.
Mio’s grin faded.
She fired one more arrow, a heavy void shot that punched through the Captain’s outer shell and sent him stumbling backward. But the miasma was too thick now. It was eating at her bow, eating at her robes, eating at the air around her.
She was running out of time.
Damon saw it happen.
The way the miasma curled around her bowstring, the way it hissed and smoked as it made contact with her skin. He saw the calculation in her eyes, the split-second decision she was about to make.
He signaled her.
Step down.
She looked at him, her grin returning.
She raised her hand to the referee.
"I yield."
The crowd erupted in confusion, but Mio just shrugged and walked off the stage, her bow slung over her shoulder. She passed Damon in the dugout, her voice low and playful.
"Your turn to clean up the mess."
Damon watched her go, then turned his attention back to the arena.
The Captain was still standing, his mutated form hunched and breathing heavily, the miasma swirling around him like a living storm. He was exhausted, but he was still dangerous.
And he was about to face Seraphina.
She stepped onto the stage, her boots silent against the stone.
The Tempest Azure Blade hung at her hip, its scabbard gleaming with a soft, electric light. Her lime-green hair was tied in its usual high ponytail, but now it crackled with static electricity, tiny arcs of lightning dancing between the strands.
She didn’t look at the Captain.
She looked at the miasma.
And she smiled.
The Captain unleashed his full power.
The miasma condensed into a thick, black acidic sludge that poured across the stage like a wave.
It hissed and bubbled, eating through the stone, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
The sludge rose higher and higher, forming a wall of corrosive death that rushed toward Seraphina.
She didn’t move.
She just stood there, her hand resting on the hilt of her curved blade, her emerald eyes fixed on the approaching wave.
The sludge was ten feet away.
Five feet.
Three feet.
Seraphina’s fingers tightened around the hilt.
And then the wind began to howl.
Azure dragon wind erupted from her body, a cyclone of pure elemental force that spiraled around her boots. It rose higher and higher, forming a localized vortex that pushed the miasma backward.
The sludge stopped.
It hung in the air, suspended by the force of the wind, unable to advance another inch.
The Captain’s eyes widened.
He tried to push more miasma into the attack, but it was useless. The vortex was too strong, too pure. It was cutting through his corruption like a blade through silk.
Seraphina drew her blade.
The Tempest Azure Blade sang as it left the scabbard, its edge glowing with a soft, electric light. She held it low, the tip pointing toward the ground, her stance relaxed and ready.
She looked at the Captain.
And she spoke.
"You’ve been using that core for too long."
The Captain’s face twisted with rage.
"You know nothing of my power!"
He charged, his massive claws extended, the miasma swirling around him like a cloak.
Seraphina didn’t move.
She just waited.
And when he was close enough, she struck.
The blade moved faster than the eye could track, a blur of azure light that cut through the miasma like it was paper.
The Captain’s claws shattered on impact, his scales cracking and breaking apart.
He stumbled backward, his hand missing three fingers. The crowd gasped, a wave of shock and horror rippling through the onlookers.
Seraphina lowered her blade, her expression calm. "Your core is burning out. You have one more attack before it kills you."
The Captain’s eyes went wide, his remaining fingers twitching. He knew she was right. He could feel the core eating through his remaining vitality, consuming his life force to fuel the miasma. He had minutes left, maybe seconds.
He made his choice. He would not die alone. He would take her with him.
The air crackled with tension.
He threw everything into one final attack, condensing the miasma into a single point, a black orb of pure corruption that pulsed with malevolent energy.
The orb screamed through the air, leaving a trail of dark smoke. Seraphina raised her blade, her stance unwavering.
The miasma condensed into a single point, a black orb of pure corruption that pulsed with malevolent energy. He hurled it at Seraphina, the orb screaming through the air.
Seraphina raised her blade.
