Chapter 61: Chapter 61: Beth’s Situation

"You have a disciple?"

When they heard that question. Both the student and the teacher looked at the man like he was an idiot.

Really? This is what you focus on?

Even Beth was taken aback, not just by the sheer shamelessness of the teacher student but even by the reaction of the man who had just arrived.

"What is that supposed to mean? Did you hit your head?" Keira cracked her fist and asked, "want me to take a look at it?"

"No. No. No..." Frantically shaking his head, the man started apologizing. "I will get to it right away. If it’s dealing with a simple gang, the guild will handle it and report to the government. I am sure they would love the free PR."

"Hmm... Find out why the police are coming here so late." Keira nodded, and just as she was about to walk away, she heard the faint wailing of the sirens from the distance. "They might be involved as well."

She walked towards Derrick and lifted him without any care for his ’injuries.’ "I will take them away. You can deal with the rest, can’t you?"

"Of course." The man instantly straightened up and turned to the side, letting Keira walk away with Beth and Derrick.

His eyes stayed on Derrick a while longer, his thought unknown.

While Keira placed Derrick inside the jeep, the police finally arrived on the scene.

"Hey! Where do you think you are going?! This is a crime scene. Stop before I arrest you!" The car slid to a stop. A plum officer jumped out of the car along with his squad and rushed to the scene while shouting at Keira from the distance.

But the black-haired beauty paid him no attention.

"Can you take me to my house?" She was getting Beth to come with them as well. "I need to check up on my mother."

Keira did not know who she was, but she could tell Beth was somehow important to her student, and for that reason, she decided to take her away with them.

"I SAID, STOP!" The police captain, who was shouting before, rushed forward, seeing Keira ignore him, but he was stopped by a man in a suit.

"Please, calm down, office. My name is Dominic Shard. I am a handler from the Golden Dawn Guild. I am sure you have heard of us."

With the confidence that he lacked before Keira, the man took out an identity badge from his coat and shoved it in the face of the captain who was frozen solid in his tracks.

Hearing the name of the guild, his face went pale. "Go-golden Dawn guild?"

He gulped as beads of sweat dripped from his.

Pocketing the identity, the man in the suit pointed at the legs of the dead. "Someone here attacked a high-ranking officer from our guild, so I am here to make sure no one tempts with the investigation. I have already called someone from a higher department of the government."

His meaning was clear despite his flowery wordings. You are not needed, and you don’t have the power to make decisions here. So, go away.

And the captain clearly understood it.

His face turned red in shame. He looked beyond the man at the Jeep that turned around and was driving away.

And there was nothing he could do to stop it.

...

The moment Derrick sat in the car, his injuries mysteriously vanished. He leaned against the seat as Keira drove the car following the directions Beth gave her.

Since the roads here were packed with crowds and vehicles, Keira took the jeep into the air and took them to their first stop in less than a minute.

Beth Silverheart’s home.

It was on the edge of the district where all the rundown houses were standing. Hers was one of them.

The moment they stopped before one of the small houses, Beth rushed out of the car and ran inside. "Mom."

Derrick and Keira followed behind slowly.

"So, what is so special about the girl that you, who fears fighting so much, killed someone for her?" Keira finally asked the question she had been dying to ask once they were alone.

Derrick did not hide anything and told her what he wanted to do with her. He even went as far as telling her about him hacking the government site. And he did that without admitting to anything openly, naturally.

Keira stayed silent for a while, glancing at him from the corner of her eyes, and then she only said, "We will talk about this later."

Derrick nodded as they walked inside the house behind Beth.

The house had only a single floor. There were cracks all over the place. It had normal curtains, no high-level tech that even the poor could afford.

Everything inside the house was at the bare minimum.

A simple living room connected to the kitchen and two rooms in the back.

Beth heard the coughing sound and rushed inside one of the rooms.

"Mom, I am home." On a makeshift king-sized bed sat a middle-aged woman.

The woman on the bed looked like a strong wind could carry her away.

She was thin; her cheeks were sunk inside her mouth.

Her skin hung loose over her bones, and she appeared pale as a vampire.

She had gray hair, and her eyes were dull. They looked tired, tired from living in such distress all the time.

Her hands rested on top of the blanket, fingers trembling slightly even at rest.

Her condition is bad. Even Derrick without his prior knowledge could tell as much.

The moment she saw them, she tried to push herself upright, arms shaking with the effort.

"Bethy, you are home early. Ah, did you bring guests?" she rasped, voice thin as paper. "I should... greet them properly..."

"Please, don’t." Derrick stepped forward and pushed her gently before she could get up.

Seeing the gentleness in his eyes and hands, the mother’s eyes curved upwards slightly.

"We’re friends of Beth’s. You don’t need to get up on our account."

The woman hesitated, then a warm smile appeared on her face.

"Thank you," she whispered. "It’s a relief to know that my shy daughter finally has some great friends."

Beth, hiding her flushed face, moved past them without a word.

She pulled a small case from the nightstand, sorting through a handful of pill bottles easily.

"Here, take it slowly. You should have already taken this. I even left a note on the nightstand." She measured out a small dose, mixed with water in a cup, and helped her mother drink it slow, one hand steady behind her back.
