Chapter 194: 194 | Decks and Boundaries

By morning, the Flying Spiritual Ship had already left the mountains far behind.

White cloud streams slid past the hull in long broken ribbons. The main flight arrays along the outer ribs pulsed with steady blue light, and the vessel moved with the calm pressure of a mobile fortress. On the lower spirit deck, disciples were already awake. Some practiced breathing arts near the rail. Others gathered in groups and spoke in low voices about the tournament route, rival sects, and rankings.

Lin Tian stepped out of rest chamber seventeen and closed the door behind him.

The corridor was narrow, clean, and watched. Thin detection lines ran through the wall panels, faint enough that ordinary disciples might ignore them, but clear to anyone paying attention. He walked at a steady pace toward the open deck.

The moment he appeared, several conversations shifted.

"That’s Lin Tian."

"He looks ordinary until you remember what Wei Chang looked like."

Lin Tian ignored both. He stopped at the rail and let his gaze move across the allowed section of the ship. From here, the lower spirit deck stretched in a wide curve of pale boards and spirit-lamp posts. Above it, separated by glowing barrier lines, rose the core disciple level. Higher still, half-hidden behind denser formations, sat the elder section. Close in distance, yet far in access.

A sharp voice cut across the deck.

"All representatives remain on the lower spirit deck unless summoned."

Instructor Qing walked into view from the central stair platform, crimson uniform neat, expression cold. Two stewards followed her with record jades. The nearer disciples straightened at once.

She stopped where the deck could hear her clearly.

"Listen once. Elder section is forbidden. Core section requires written order. After the night bell, representatives return to their rest chambers. Anyone crossing a barrier array without cause will be punished under travel law."

Every disciple on the deck went still.

Qing’s gaze moved across the crowd with the same severeness she used in the arena. When it passed near Lin Tian, the air around her tightened almost imperceptibly. She looked away first and continued giving instructions to the stewards.

A small disturbance rose near the inner passage.

Two outer-path disciples had argued over space by a supply locker. One shoved the other hard enough to knock a water flask across the boards. Before the quarrel could grow, Qing was already there.

"Enough."

Her voice carried clearly despite its quiet tone. Both disciples froze. She recorded their tokens, assigned deck cleaning duty, and dismissed them with a single look. The efficiency of it settled over the surrounding crowd more effectively than any threat.

Lin Tian watched in silence.

On this ship, strength still mattered. Authority mattered more in daily movement. Even a Peak Foundation expert walking into the wrong corridor would leave a record.

Around midday, the sky outside the formations darkened into a bruised purple.

The Flying Spiritual Ship entered the Weeping Cloud Rift, a notorious stretch of turbulent airspace connecting the sect territories. Violent spatial winds slammed against the hull, making the deck vibrate beneath their feet. Blue light flared along the outer ribs as the ship’s defensive arrays absorbed the impacts.

Lin Tian watched the energy ripple across the barrier. His engineer mind automatically traced the load distribution. The main flight core pushed seventy percent of its power to the forward shield, thinning the protection at the rear flank. A smart enemy attacking from the blind spot would easily crack the tail arrays. He filed the structural weakness away.

Near the inner stairwell, a steward in grey robes walked onto the deck carrying a large wooden tray. He distributed small porcelain cups to the representatives.

"Spirit Clearing Tea," the steward announced. "Brewed with calming herbs to ease the pressure of high-altitude travel. Meal rations will be delivered to your rest chambers at the hour of the rooster."

Lin Tian accepted a cup. He paused, holding it near his nose to analyze the faint spiritual steam.

"The infusion is uneven," Lin Tian noted quietly. "The fire-attribute herb was added three breaths too late, leaving the wood essence bitter."

The steward blinked, clearly startled that a junior disciple could identify the brewing flaw just from the steam.

"I will relay your feedback to the elder," the steward said with a respectful nod before moving on.

Near mid-afternoon, the upper barrier shimmered as an elder path opened briefly.

Elder Liu crossed from one sealed platform to another with two Alchemy Peak assistants behind her. She wore formal emerald robes and the public face of a Matriarch. From the lower deck she looked distant, composed, and untouchable. Several disciples bowed. Her gaze swept past them all equally.

For a fraction of a second, her eyes lowered toward the representative rail.

Then she walked on, her steps continuous and measured, her gaze fixed forward.

Lin Tian’s expression stayed flat. In public, that distance was correct. Anything more would have been dangerous for both of them.

Later, near the array core of the ship, he saw Elder Bai.

She stood with one hand behind her back, studying a vertical column of flight runes as the blue light flowed through it. Two formation stewards waited beside her in silence. Bai’s attention was precise, almost absorbed. Only when a group of representatives passed below did her gaze dip once toward the lower deck.

She noticed Lin Tian.

The look held only for a moment, as if she were fitting him into some unspoken calculation. Then she returned to the runes.

By late afternoon, Lin Tian had walked every route open to representatives.

He marked the places that mattered. The central stair checkpoint was always manned. The barrier between lower spirit deck and core deck responded to token grade. The elder section rejected ordinary probing divine sense entirely. Quieter corners existed near the outer rail at shift-change, but quiet carried its own dangers. On a ship this crowded, secrets needed more than shadow. They needed reason.

Gao Chen appeared near the port-side rail, practicing slow sword forms with a wooden training blade. His movements were precise and measured. Lin Tian watched from a distance, his Insight Eye catching the flaws in the man’s technique. During the third thrust of his sequence, Gao Chen’s wrist rotated half a degree too far outward, leaking a fraction of his Sword Intent into the air. It was a tiny flaw, invisible to ordinary eyes, but fatal against a true master. Lin Tian memorized the exact angle and looked away.

As the afternoon faded, the spirit lamps along the corridors shifted from bright white to a warm, dim amber. The transition signaled the approach of the evening curfew. Lin Tian sat on a wooden bench near the water supply station and closed his eyes. He sent a thread of divine sense into his spatial ring, checking his inventory. Three mid-grade spirit stones, a stack of blank jade slips, and the remaining pattern masks from the Ghost Market. Everything was secure.

He opened his eyes and watched the amber light reflect off the polished floorboards. The ship’s internal arrays hummed a slightly deeper note as the main flight core adjusted for night travel, drawing more power from the earth-vein batteries stored in the lower hull.

When the sky outside the formations darkened completely, a bronze bell rang through the decks.

"Night restriction begins!"

"Representatives return to assigned rest chambers!"

Disciples moved at once. A few still lingered by the rail until stewards drove them inward. Qing appeared again at the central platform, overseeing the return with the same cold patience. One junior tried to claim he had forgotten his chamber row. She cut the excuse short with a single line and sent him back under escort.

Lin Tian returned at the first bell.

Inside rest chamber seventeen, the privacy formation closed with a soft pulse. The room was the same as before: rest platform, low table, sealed window. Through the window, cloud haze rushed by in the dark like pale smoke.

He sat once and rested the wrapped blade against the wall.

The ship had made one truth obvious. Elder Liu was on the same vessel yet separated by rank walls. Instructor Qing could stand near him but only under duty. Elder Bai could watch him but only through her own interests. All three remained close yet required a legitimate reason to approach.

On this ship, desire lacking a proper path would only create openings for enemies.

Lin Tian studied the sealed window for a moment longer. Outside, the Flying Spiritual Ship continued through the night route, steady and heavily guarded. Inside its layered decks, every important person held a fixed place, and every place carried its own boundary.

He dismissed the thought and closed his eyes.

The tournament grounds were still days away. Whatever came next would arrive in its own time.

But somewhere on the middle deck, footsteps paused outside his chamber door. They lingered for three breaths, then moved on without stopping.
