I'm The Devil
Chapter 383: Shadows of the First Order
In the gleaming spires of the Celestial Court’s hidden realm — a place suspended between what mortals called Heaven and the void beyond — Seraphina sat upon the central throne. The marble seat, once shared in council by elders like Aurelius, now bore only her presence. The old guard had faded or fallen in the long silence after the Flood. She had risen as the unchallenged voice of the nephilim, the last fierce guardian of the old order.
The grand chamber’s tapestries still depicted cosmic histories, but newer banners hung beside them — symbols of pre-Flood victories and warnings against corruption. Below the throne, a mix of veteran nephilim and a younger generation stood in disciplined ranks. The elders carried the weight of ancient grudges. The new blood — born in the safer enclaves after the old wars — burned with inherited righteousness but trembled with something deeper.
Fear.
A young nephilim named Elara, barely two centuries old, stepped forward with a scrying orb that still flickered with residual images from the mortal realm. The devastation in the City of Wonders played out in miniature: ruined streets, craters, blood on asphalt.
"These two brothers — Cain and Seth — are the immediate cause," Elara reported, voice steady but eyes darting. "Their clash last night killed dozens of mortals and exposed our world further. But... there is more."
Seraphina leaned forward, her golden armor catching the ethereal light. Her face was beautiful in the way a blade was beautiful — sharp, unforgiving. "Speak plainly."
Elara swallowed. "Lucifer was present. Not in direct combat, but he met with Cain on a rooftop the night before. Then mediated between Cain and Seth in the ruins. The brothers... they shook hands. They spoke of alliance."
A ripple of unease spread through the hall. An elder nephilim, his wings scarred from battles long past, muttered, "The Devil plays at peacemaker now."
"He is no longer the Devil," Seraphina corrected, voice cold. "He is God. That is the problem."
The fear was palpable now. Even among the new generation — those who had only heard the stories — Lucifer’s name carried terror. Their fathers, the Watchers who had descended in the days before the Flood, had feared him. As the Devil, Lucifer had walked Hell and challenged Heaven itself. He had reshaped curses, toppled pantheons, and turned beings like Medusa into weapons of his will. Now he sat on the ultimate throne.
One of the younger nephilim, a broad-shouldered warrior named Torin, spoke up, voice tight. "The stories say even our fathers avoided direct confrontation with him when he was merely the Morningstar. He commanded legions of the fallen. Michael — Michael — once stood as his equal in battle. Now Michael serves him. With a snap of his fingers, the God of the multiverse could erase this entire realm. Why would he allow Cain and Seth to unite under his watch?"
Seraphina’s eyes flashed. "Because he is corruption incarnate. The Old God stepped back because humanity needed testing. Lucifer seized the throne because he thrives in chaos. He preaches redemption while gathering the worst of creation — fallen gods, cursed bloodlines, monsters who should have been purged. He turned Athena, once our distant ally in wisdom, into his wife. He empowered the Gorgon. And now he seeks to shield the First Murderer and his brother from justice."
She stood, armor gleaming as she descended the steps. Her presence filled the chamber.
"I do not deny the fear," she said, meeting the eyes of the younger nephilim. "You were raised on tales of the Devil who made angels tremble. Now that Devil wears the crown of God and commands hosts that once opposed him. Michael walks at his side. The old laws are twisted. Mercy is given to those who deserve only judgment."
Elara’s hands trembled slightly on the orb. "Then... how do we fight him?"
Seraphina placed a hand on the young woman’s shoulder. "We do not fight him directly. Not yet. We strike at the fractures he is trying to mend. Cain and Seth are the key. Their hatred is ancient and deep. If we can provoke them back into open war — or eliminate one and blame the other — Lucifer’s precious ’new order’ cracks. The multiverse will see that his mercy is weakness."
A veteran nephilim stepped forward. "And if he intervenes personally?"
Seraphina’s smile was thin and sharp. "Then we remind the realms what the Celestial Court was created for. We are the children of Watchers and humans — the bridge and the enforcers. We carry the fire of the old laws. Even a God who was once the Rebel can be challenged if His corruption threatens all existence."
She turned to the assembled court, voice rising with righteous fire.
"Prepare the legions. Watch the brothers. Celeste’s scrying will guide us. We move within days. Not against Lucifer directly — not until the moment is perfect — but against everything he seeks to protect. Let the First Sons bleed again. Let the world remember that some sins cannot be redeemed."
The younger nephilim exchanged uneasy glances, but they bowed. The fear remained — stories of Lucifer as Devil were terrifying enough. As God, with Michael at his command and the full host of Heaven and Hell at his fingertips, he was something closer to apocalypse. Yet Seraphina’s conviction held them.
As the council dispersed to prepare, Seraphina remained on the throne, staring into the scrying orb. Images of Cain’s smirk and Seth’s reluctant handshake flickered across it.
"You think you can rewrite the story, Morningstar," she whispered. "But some Chapters must end in blood. I will make sure of it."
Far away, in the ruins and on distant rooftops, Lucifer felt the shift — a cold gaze pressing against the fabric of reality. He smiled faintly, red eyes narrowing.
The game had truly begun.
