I'm The Devil

Chapter 382: Brothers Under New Skies

The neutral ground was an old temple ruin half-swallowed by forest and time, far from mortal cities and divine strongholds. Moonlight filtered through broken columns, casting long shadows across cracked marble floors where grass pushed through stone. It had once belonged to no single pantheon — a forgotten place where prayers from many tongues had echoed before the world moved on. Lucifer had chosen it deliberately. Neutral. Quiet. Heavy with the weight of forgotten history.

He stood at the center, black coat blending with the night, red eyes calm. Athena waited a short distance behind him, grey gaze sharp and calculating. Medusa leaned against a pillar, snakes restless but controlled. Khaos had chosen not to appear directly — her presence lingered in the air like an unspoken warning.

Cain arrived first.

He stepped out of the shadows as if they had birthed him, crimson eyes scanning the ruins. When they landed on Lucifer, he gave a slow nod. No words. The agreement from the rooftop still hung between them.

Then came Seth.

He appeared on the opposite side of the clearing, flanked by two wary lieutenants who stopped at the treeline when Seth raised a hand. He looked like a man carved from storm clouds — dark hair streaked with silver, eyes carrying the exhaustion of endless wandering. The mark on his soul, though invisible, radiated in the space between the brothers like heat from a forge.

For a long moment, the three of them simply stood there. Cain and Seth stared at each other across twenty paces of broken stone. Centuries of blood, betrayal, and separation compressed into a single silence.

Lucifer spoke first, voice carrying easily through the ruins.

"Thank you for coming. Both of you."

Seth’s gaze shifted to him. Recognition flickered, followed by something darker. "Lucifer Morningstar. Or do they call you God now?"

"Both names fit," Lucifer replied evenly. "Tonight, I’m here as someone who knows what it means to stand between Heaven’s judgment and your own choices."

Cain crossed his arms. "My brother and I have stood in many places. None of them ended well."

Seth laughed — a short, bitter sound. "That’s one way to describe it. You murdered me in a field because God favored my offering. Then the Old Father marked you and sent me wandering. And now here we are again. Different field. Different God watching."

Lucifer stepped forward, positioning himself equidistant from both. "The Old God is not here. He stepped back long ago. I’m different. I don’t watch from afar. I don’t demand perfection before offering mercy. I offer the chance to end this cycle before Seraphina and the Celestial Court use it to burn everything down."

Cain’s eyes narrowed. "You told me on that rooftop that you listen. So listen now. My brother has spent centuries building resentment. Gathering allies. Calling in debts. He wants my head as much as the nephilim do."

Seth’s expression hardened. "And why shouldn’t I? You killed me. You took everything. The favor. The peace. The life I was building. I’ve wandered this world carrying the weight of your sin while you built empires in the dark."

"You forgave nothing," Cain shot back. "You turned survival into an accusation. Every pack you gather, every debt you call — it’s all pointed at me."

Lucifer raised a hand. The air between the brothers grew heavier, not with threat, but with a gentle but undeniable pressure that commanded attention.

"Enough." His voice was quiet, but it carried the weight of creation behind it. "I didn’t bring you here to re-litigate the first murder. That blood is old. The mark is old. The pain is real. But the future doesn’t have to be."

He looked at Seth. "You’ve survived. You’ve built something despite the curse. That strength matters. But if you let it fuel endless war with your brother, Seraphina wins without lifting a finger. She wants both of you broken and bleeding in public. A spectacle to prove the old order still holds power."

Seth’s jaw worked. "And what do you offer instead? Absolution? A pat on the head from the new God?"

"I offer a choice," Lucifer said. "Stand together against the Court. Or stand apart and let them pick you off one by one. I won’t force you. I’m not the Old God. I don’t mark people for failing to be perfect. But I will protect what’s mine — and whether you like it or not, both of you carry pieces of the story I now oversee."

Cain glanced at Lucifer, then at his brother. Something shifted in his crimson gaze — not softness, but the first crack in centuries of iron resolve. "Mabel told me what Seraphina wants. She wants her to watch everything burn. Our legacy. Our children. Everything we built after the Flood."

Seth’s expression flickered at Mabel’s name. Old pain. Old love. Old regret. "She was my friend once too. Before you took her."

"She chose," Cain said quietly. "Just as I chose. Just as you chose to survive."

Lucifer let the silence stretch this time, watching both men grapple with truths they had carried alone for too long.

Athena stepped forward. Her voice was clear and measured. "The Celestial Court is mobilizing. Seraphina has gathered nephilim who survived the old wars. They see Lucifer’s ascension as chaos. They believe punishing the original sins — Cain’s mark, the Flood’s survivors — will restore order. They are wrong. But they are dangerous."

Medusa added, her tone edged with memory, "I once carried a curse I didn’t deserve. Lucifer took that curse and made it power. He doesn’t erase pain. He reshapes it. You two could be more than the first wound this world suffered."

Seth stared at the ground for a long moment. When he looked up, his eyes were raw. "I’ve hated you for so long, brother. It became easier than remembering the field. Easier than wondering what we could have been if jealousy hadn’t won that day."

Cain’s shoulders sagged almost imperceptibly. "And I’ve carried the mark so long I forgot it wasn’t the only thing defining me."

Lucifer watched them. The red in his eyes softened, not with weakness, but with recognition. "The Old God demanded sacrifice without understanding cost. I understand cost. I paid it myself. So here is my offer — not as judgment, but as God who was once the rebel: Work with me. Pool your knowledge. Your forces. Your pain. Face Seraphina together. Not as enemies, but as the first sons who survived what should have destroyed them."

The wind moved through the ruins, carrying the scent of earth and ancient stone.

Seth exhaled slowly. "If we do this... if I agree... what happens after the Court is dealt with?"

Lucifer smiled faintly. "Then you decide what kind of future you want. I won’t chain you. I won’t mark you. Hell has room for those who need rest. Heaven has room for those who want peace. Or you build something new on Earth. The choice is yours."

Cain looked at his brother. For the first time in millennia, the gaze wasn’t pure accusation. "We were brothers once. Before the offerings. Before the field."

Seth met his eyes. "We were."

The silence that followed wasn’t peaceful. It was heavy. Fragile. But real.

Cain extended his hand first. "One war. Together. Then we see what remains."

Seth stared at the offered hand for a long heartbeat. Then he took it. The grip was firm. Not warm. Not forgiving. But a beginning.

Lucifer watched them, the weight of multiversal authority resting lightly on his shoulders.

"Good," he said quietly. "Now we prepare. Seraphina is coming. And when she does, she will find more than two broken brothers waiting for her."

As the moon climbed higher, the three of them — God, First Murderer, and First Survivor — began to speak of strategy. Old wounds remained. But for the first time, they were no longer the only thing binding them.

Far away, in realms unseen, Seraphina felt the shift. The board was moving.

And the new God had just placed His pieces.
