The scented candle from Su Yue’s colleague smelled quite pleasant when lit.

Lin Li had a candlelit dinner at Su Yue’s home. He helped with the dishes, then left.

The silver van drove out of the Ping’an Garden District, speeding toward home.

In a greenbelt somewhere in the Ping’an Garden District, two small stray cats stared, unblinking, at a van parked in a space.

After Lin Li parked the van and got out, his gaze swept over the greenbelt to his side. He immediately spotted two small stray cats sitting on the grass, watching him.

’These two little guys...,’ Lin Li thought. It seemed to him that these two small strays were often watching him just like this.

Lin Li pulled his gaze away from the two small stray cats and turned to leave. Just then, the Little Black Cat said to its companion, "Let’s go!"

The Little White Cat nodded. The two strays then dashed toward a large, leafy tree by the complex’s wall, nimbly scaled it, and leaped over to the other side.

The elevator doors opened, and a bright, childish voice immediately drifted into his ears.

Lin Li stepped out of the elevator and looked toward the source of the voice.

He saw Zhou Tongtong sitting on the steps. Her hair was tied in a bun, she wore a cute little dress, and her small hands were propping up her chin as she hummed a nursery rhyme.

"Two tigers, two tigers, run so fast, run so fast. One has no ears, and one has no tail. How strange, how strange..."

"Zhou Tongtong, what are you doing...?" Lin Li asked, looking quizzically at the little girl humming a nursery rhyme on the steps.

"Lin Li!!!" Zhou Tongtong heard the familiar voice and looked up, letting out a delighted cry.

"Are you locked out?" Lin Li ventured.

"Yeah," Zhou Tongtong nodded. "I forgot to bring my key when I went out."

"Where’s your mom?"

"Mom went out to run some errands."

"I see! Well, why don’t you come wait at my place?" Lin Li said, ushering Zhou Tongtong toward his apartment as he pulled the key from his pocket and opened the door.

Zhou Tongtong had been sitting outside for about twenty minutes and had already sung her way through several nursery rhymes.

Hearing Lin Li invite her to his place, she immediately picked up the small metal basin she had set beside her and followed him inside.

It was getting dark out, and the apartment was dim. Lin Li walked in and immediately flicked on the lights.

Seeing Zhou Tongtong sit down on the living room sofa, Lin Li pulled a pack of small cookies from a bag on the coffee table and handed it to her.

"Have a little something to tide you over," he said. "I’ll call your mom and ask when she’ll be back."

"Thank you, Lin Li," Zhou Tongtong said politely, reaching out to take the cookies.

Who wouldn’t love a kid as cute and polite as her? Lin Li smiled. He picked up the remote, turned on the television, and found a cartoon channel.

As she nibbled on her cookies, Zhou Tongtong’s attention was quickly captured by the cartoon on the screen.

Lin Li then pulled his phone from his pocket, opened his contacts, found Xia Qing’s number, and dialed.

BEEP...

A few seconds after he dialed, Xia Qing picked up.

"Hello."

"Xia Qing, you’re not home?"

"That’s right. I went out to run some errands this afternoon. I’m at the market buying groceries now, but I’ll be heading back soon. What’s up?"

Lin Li glanced to his side. The little girl must have heard him get through to her mom, as she was now looking at him.

"Oh, you’re buying groceries and will be back soon... Well, I just got home and saw Zhou Tongtong locked out of your apartment," Lin Li said.

"Tongtong is locked out?" Xia Qing’s face showed her surprise. She was holding a bag of freshly bought vegetables.

"Yes, she forgot her key when she went out. She’s at my place now, watching some cartoons until you get back."

"Thank you. I’m sorry for the trouble."

"It’s no problem."

After a brief exchange with Xia Qing, Lin Li hung up.

At the market, Xia Qing put her phone away and hurried toward the fishmonger in the distance.

If she hadn’t had to make a trip to the police station to handle a matter, she would have already been home with her groceries by now.

"Your mom’s at the market buying groceries. She’ll be back soon," Lin Li said to Zhou Tongtong, placing his phone on the coffee table.

"Okay." Zhou Tongtong nodded, then reached into the bag for another cookie, popping it into her mouth and eating it with a CRUNCH, CRUNCH.

"I’ll go get you a drink," Lin Li said with a smile, getting up and heading for the kitchen.

"Lin Li, you don’t have to get me a drink. I’m fine with some water," Zhou Tongtong said, her eyes on the pitcher of water on the coffee table.

"It’s no trouble," Lin Li said.

"Mom will be making dinner soon after she gets back from the market. If I have a drink now, I won’t be able to eat," Zhou Tongtong explained.

"Oh, I see! Okay then, I’ll get you some water." Lin Li grabbed a small disposable paper cup and poured a little water into it for Zhou Tongtong.

"Thank you." Zhou Tongtong took the cup and began to take small sips. The cookies were delicious, but they were also making her thirsty.
