I Reincarnated in a Novel World as a Villain?
Chapter 30: Shadows Behind the Library Wings
The creak of old wooden floorboards beneath Raven's boots broke the silence of the library's second floor, filled with the scent of old paper dust and dry ink. The closing sentence he dropped still hung in the chilling air, establishing a dangerous yet promising negotiation space among the three-story tall looming dark bookshelves.
I narrowed my eyes, staring straight into his grey pupils reflecting a faint blue glow from the ice magic at my fingertips. "You're asking me to betray the crown prince who just saved my name at this morning's disciplinary council, Raven," I said with a low, cold tone, testing how far the youth's stance went. "Cliché motives like family revenge aren't enough to convince me to jump off a cliff alongside a shadow fugitive."
Raven showed no sign of intimidation. He crossed his arms over his chest, leaning his shoulder casually against an ancient academy-crested stone pillar. "Prince Leonhardt isn't saving you out of the goodness of his heart, Alicia. He's saving you because you're currently the most valuable pawn on his chessboard. Once his position in court stabilizes and Sterling faction threats subside, he won't hesitate to discard anyone deemed an anomaly to throne stability."
Those words struck right at the weakest point of my fragile alliance with the prince. In this ruthless imperial political world, no allies or enemies were eternal—only interests. Leonhardt was a male lead burdened with the moral duty of saving the kingdom, while I was an alien soul from Earth wanting only to survive without becoming a historical sacrifice.
"Then what makes your offer different?" I snapped sharply, lifting my chin to maintain an arrogant villainess posture. "You're hiding ancient dark mana and aiming to crush the entire system down to its roots. That's not just political resistance, Raven. That's high-level terrorism."
Raven smiled crookedly, a rare faint smirk crossing his face. "Terrorism or revolution, it's just a matter of who wins the war at the story's end, Alicia. The shadow faction cares nothing for the empire's remaining citizens; their master only wants to open the northern gate to free an ancient entity sleeping there. If that seal breaks, the palace where Leonhardt stands will collapse first before touching your family."
I fell silent, pondering every argument he offered. My brain worked a hundred times faster, restructuring the entire original novel plot I used as a future guide. In the original storyline, Raven died as a pitiful supporting victim in the second half for fighting the shadow faction alone without adequate political backing. Now, with my presence—a villainess possessing pure ice mana and controlling the Valerian military house name—that destiny could be entirely diverted.
"Fine," I finally spoke after seconds of silence, lowering the ice light in my hand slowly. "I accept this secret alliance. But remember my condition: I won't become anyone's chess piece, including yours. We move as equal partners."
Raven stared intently, measuring the seriousness behind my sharp gaze. A moment later, he nodded slowly. "A fair deal, Lady Alicia. As a first step, tonight we divide tasks. I'll sneak into the ministerial council underground archives to steal a copy of the northern gate seal map hidden by the Sterling faction."
"And what's my part?" I asked promptly.
"Keeping the charade of your relationship with Prince Leonhardt running smoothly on the surface," Raven said, turning to step back into the bookshelf shadows. "Because court suspicion is our best shield to hide our actual movements."
Before his body dissolved completely into the shadows, Raven glanced back with a final warning. "Be careful, Alicia. A shadow faction spy has successfully infiltrated the crown prince's personal guard unit."
That sentence snapped my consciousness alert. The crown prince's personal guard? That meant threats didn't just come from outside the academy, but sat right in the inner circle protecting me.
As Raven's footsteps vanished completely, I took a deep breath, steadying the churning emotions in my chest. The game had just begun, and the stakes were no longer exam grades or social standing, but the survival of this entire fictional world.
