I Reincarnated in a Novel World as a Villain?
Chapter 29: Whispers Behind the Old Library
The echo of Prince Leonhardt's heavy boots leaving the disciplinary council room still left a dense, heavy tension in the air. The faculty council members, especially the representatives from the Sterling family faction, sat frozen with sour expressions, suppressing immense frustration. Their dirty plot to make me a scapegoat for the destroyed underground labyrinth incident had shattered completely thanks to the absolute intervention of the crown prince, who stepped up to shield me with an airtight alibi of a secret royal investigation.
"Today's disciplinary hearing is adjourned," Lord Vane said with a tired voice, tapping a small wooden gavel against the black oak desk. "Lady Alicia, you are dismissed. However, supervision over your extracurricular activities will be tightened for the remainder of this semester."
I dipped my head slightly with an elegant bow, maintaining a villainess posture completely untouched by such cheap threats. "Thank you for the Headmaster's wisdom. I assure you my academic performance will never disappoint the institution."
Stepping out of the grand hearing room doors, the cool corridor breeze hit my face, easing the tightness that had gripped my chest during the interrogation. My footsteps carried me calmly yet purposefully toward the western wing of the academy, where the ancient library stood majestically with rows of three-story high giant bookshelves housing historical documents and forbidden magic scrolls.
Today's incident was a decisive victory before the faculty, but I knew the enemies behind the scenes wouldn't rest. The Sterling faction was undoubtedly plotting a dirtier strategy, while the shadow faction watched every move from the darkness. My emergency alliance with the crown prince was my sole protective shield right now, but relying too heavily on him wasn't safe long-term. In this imperial political novel world, trust was a luxury item bought with lives.
Entering the quiet second-floor corridor of the old library—a restricted zone rarely visited by regular students due to thick dust and sealing spells—a dark figure suddenly stepped out from behind a massive stone pillar, blocking my path silently.
My reflexes surged; my palms heated instantly, conjuring sharp ice crystal sparks ready to fly if the figure showed murderous intent. Yet, before I could launch a counter-attack, a faint scent of pine and expensive pipe tobacco drifted in the air, accompanied by a very familiar bariton voice.
"Calm your emotions, Lady Alicia. If you intend to collapse half of this old library just out of surprise, the academy monitors might actually drag you to the underground dungeons this time," Raven said in a calm, flat tone, materializing from the shadows of the bookshelves.
I exhaled slowly, dimming the ice light in my hand while glaring sharply at the silver-haired youth. "You have a very annoying new hobby, Raven: appearing suddenly in quiet places without a sound like a wandering ghost. Isn't there anything more normal for a model student to do?"
Raven didn't answer right away. He stepped closer slowly, hands buried deep inside his uniform jacket pockets, which looked slightly darker than standard student issue. His cold grey eyes stared intently, carrying a mental burden far deeper than his teenage years. In the novel's original plot, Raven was a mysterious supporting character nursing a deep grudge against the imperial family and noble factions over past tragedies—a dark background making him extremely dangerous if left wandering alone.
"This morning's disciplinary hearing was quite interesting," Raven broke the silence, his voice echoing softly in the quiet library aisle. "Prince Leonhardt risked his own political reputation before the faculty board just to save a hated villainess. Since when did the crown's pet dog care so much about the Valerian daughter's safety?"
Hearing Raven's sharp sarcasm, I offered a thin, cynical smile. "My relationship with Prince Leonhardt is none of your business, Raven. Besides, aren't you sticking your nose into my affairs far too often lately? Don't tell me you've joined the secret academy stalker club too."
Raven stopped right in front of me, separated by only a few steps. The surrounding temperature dropped slightly, responding to hidden mana flowing through his veins—ancient dark mana he suppressed desperately to evade magic teachers.
"I'm not stalking you, Alicia. I'm just observing how destiny's path begins straying from its intended course," Raven said softly, his gaze looking far past the library walls. "You know very well the shadow faction won't stop just because you survived last night's labyrinth trap. Their master wants your pure ice mana to unlock the ancient border gate seal in the north—where the real monster army is hidden."
That information struck my consciousness like a heavy hammer. The northern border gate seal? If the shadow faction intended to open that gate using my magic power, the empire would face mass extinction within months, and the Valerian family holding northern military command would take the full blame for the defense collapse.
"How do you know about that northern gate seal plan, Raven?" I asked with a strained voice, staring at him with maximum caution. "Top-secret information like that isn't even recorded in imperial military council archives."
Raven stared back with a bitter smile reflecting deep sorrow. "Because my family were the ones once forced to act as sacrificial guards at that cursed gate, before being slaughtered by the imperial faction and the shadow organization over a dozen years ago. My grudge against them far outweighs Prince Leonhardt's political ambitions or your family's, Alicia."
Silence fell heavily across the old library aisle. Raven's shocking confession unveiled a major secret hidden beneath the original novel's plot. This gloomy supporting character wasn't just a background extra; he was a primary key or a ticking time bomb ready to detonate and destroy the entire royal system.
"So..." I took a deep breath, steadying my voice to remain cold and calculative amid overwhelming information. "You don't intend to kill me, but rather offer a hidden alliance behind Prince Leonhardt and the court faction?"
Raven nodded slowly, his eyes locking straight onto mine without a shred of doubt. "Exactly. Prince Leonhardt wants to save this rotten royal system from within, while we both know that system is beyond saving and must be crushed to its roots. Let's work together, Alicia. You use the Valerian family's influence and your ice mana, and I'll open a secret path straight to the shadow faction's main nest."
Choices loomed before me once more—a high-stakes gamble involving lives, dirty politics, and this fictional world's fate. Without hesitation, I lifted my chin high, wearing an ambitious villainess smile.
"Very well, Raven. Let's show those arrogant court rulers and shadow bastards how a true villain shatters their game."
