Chapter 345: Chapter 234: Another Accident
"Brothers, kill the wolves, and we’ll divide the meat! Take ’em down!"
Seeing the Wolf Pack charging closer, Zhao Wendong roared again and was the first to pull the trigger. Instantly, a cacophony of gunfire erupted.
BANG! BANG! PING! CRACKLE...
A chaotic medley of gunfire rang out, sounding the death knell for the Wolf Pack.
YELP! YELP! YELP~
Painful cries rang out unceasingly. The charging Wolf Pack immediately suffered a devastating blow. The White Wolf in the rear let out another howl, its voice filled with grim resolve. After howling, it led three large male wolves at its side in a charge toward Zhao Wendong and his men!
Hearing the White Wolf’s cry, the Wolf Pack charged even faster. Wolves kept leaping into the air, only to be sent flying by a gunshot. However, some had already started to break through the militia’s line. The militiamen, without time to reload, pulled out hunting knives, axes, and other melee weapons to battle the wolves that had gotten into their midst.
Zhao Wendong kept his Type 56 carbine aimed at the White Wolf and the males beside it. Once they drew near, he unleashed a torrent of firepower, instantly felling two of the males. The White Wolf’s gaze was locked on Zhao Wendong, and once again, Zhao Wendong heard its thoughts.
’This damned human has always been against us. I have to kill him this time.’
’Heh, you want to kill me? Bring it on!’
Watching the White Wolf draw closer, Zhao Wendong calmly pulled out a fresh magazine and began to reload. Just then, a gray wolf broke through the barrage of gunfire and lunged at him from the slope. With its great, gaping maw, it sought to eliminate Zhao Wendong, the greatest threat to its Wolf King.
"WOOF WOOF WOOF!"
Dahuang, Dahei, and Erhei charged forward to intercept it, knocking the wolf to the ground in mid-air. The gray wolf was vicious. It sank its teeth into Dahei’s neck, only to let out a piercing shriek. Its entire muzzle had been shredded by the spikes on Dahei’s collar.
The morale of the three Gouzi instantly soared. They surrounded the wild wolf and savaged it, some aiming for the neck, others for the groin. Zhao Wendong finished reloading and scanned his surroundings. He was relieved to see the militiamen holding their ground, calm amidst the chaos. The few wild wolves that had broken through had been swiftly cut down on the spot.
’This isn’t working. There are too many humans. I’ll get my revenge later.’
The White Wolf’s thoughts reached him again. Hearing that it was planning to flee, Zhao Wendong couldn’t afford to hesitate. He raised his gun and fired furiously at the White Wolf King.
BANG! BANG! BANG—!
The White Wolf King had already turned, weaving back and forth to escape the battlefield. The wolf beside it was struck by Zhao Wendong’s bullets and collapsed with a pained cry. Seeing the White Wolf King trying to escape, Zhao Wendong grew anxious. This wolf was the soul of this Wolf Pack, the very source of the wolf scourge. If they didn’t kill this White Wolf, it would quickly rally another pack and terrorize the region again.
"Dammit, chase it!"
"Dahuang, don’t let it get away!"
Zhao Wendong roared and took off after the White Wolf, with several men close behind. Hearing the command, Dahuang barked at Dahei and Erhei. The three dogs let go of the wild wolf they had mauled to within an inch of its life and followed Zhao Wendong. They soon overtook him, sprinting furiously after the White Wolf.
A few minutes later, the area was littered with wolf carcasses. In a very uncharacteristic move, the White Wolf had fled on its own without issuing a retreat command. The men who stayed behind didn’t know the full situation; the moment Zhao Wendong had yelled to give chase, the Zhao Brothers at his side had followed him, along with a few other militiamen. Li Dawei had taken command of the remaining group.
"Anyone injured, get patched up now! Gather all the wolf carcasses and secure them. Then, we’ll follow the tracks and catch up to Brother Dong and his group!"
Seeing that a few men appeared to be injured, Li Dawei quickly organized them. He wasn’t worried about Zhao Wendong’s safety. With only a single White Wolf left and eight or nine men pursuing it, they were in no danger.
A moment later, a militiaman suddenly shouted, "Quick, come over and look!"
Everyone gathered around. There, in the valley, were several heavily pregnant she-wolves. They stood guard before a stone cave, baring their teeth and growling menacingly at the militiamen.
"This is their den. Kill all these she-wolves before they can give birth!"
Li Dawei said decisively.
"Right!"
The men raised their guns. A volley of shots rang out, and the entire wolf den was wiped out, root and stem.
Another ten minutes or so passed. The militiamen, finished with processing the wolf carcasses, began to excitedly follow the footprints left by Zhao Wendong’s group, each man carrying a wolf on his back. At the same time, Zhao Wendong and his men were following Xiaojin, who was tracking the White Wolf.
"Fuck, this White Wolf can really run!"
Zhao Wenjun cursed, panting so hard he could barely speak. Zhao Wendong wasn’t worried about the extra running; his main concern was the safety of Dahuang and the others. He had no idea if San Gou were a match for the White Wolf.
Having run for a long time, the White Wolf realized it was burning through its stamina too quickly. It knew it wouldn’t be able to escape the humans’ pursuit if this kept up. So, it hid behind a mound of earth up ahead, preparing to first take care of the three Gouzi that were relentlessly chasing it.
Erhei was charging ahead blindly when it suddenly heard an urgent bark from Dahuang. It slammed on the brakes and spun around. In that exact instant, the White Wolf lunged. Had it turned a moment slower, the White Wolf King would have surely pounced on it.
Seeing its strike miss, the White Wolf King bared its fangs at Dahuang and the others with a threatening growl. Not to be outdone, Dahuang bared its teeth right back. The ancestor of the Chinese Rural Dog is the wolf. In this moment, the best of the wild and the most outstanding of the domesticated began a historic duel.
