Chapter 65: Chapter 65: Grandma, are you happy?

Her drowsy, dark eyes instantly cleared. Shu Yao sat up abruptly and looked to her side.

The faint creases on the sheet resembled distant, rolling mountain peaks, their colors indistinct—cool and starkly beautiful.

She didn’t know when Qin Shiwei had left.

He had hung the pajamas he’d changed out of on a hanger.

Shu Yao stared blankly at the closed glass door to the terrace.

A small, furry head suddenly popped up, blocking her view.

"Mommy, I’m right here~"

Xiao Juzi thought his mommy was still groggy and hadn’t seen him, so he scooted closer with a little look that pleaded for attention.

"Mommy, I remember sleeping with you, so why did I wake up in the sleep pod?"

"Uh..."

’She couldn’t possibly tell him he’d been tossed in there by his own father, the man he considered an enemy.’

She deflected, "Grandma bought that sleep pod just for you. Why don’t you go tell Grandma you slept in it last night? She’ll be so happy!"

Xiao Juzi’s big, dark eyes lit up for a second before quickly dimming again, a heart-wrenchingly pitiful look on his face.

"But... I’d rather sleep with you, Mommy!"

"If you want to make Mommy happy, then you have to make Grandma happy. When Grandma is happy, Mommy is happy." Shu Yao was afraid her little Zaizai wouldn’t be able to wrap his head around anything more complicated, so she didn’t bother with any grand reasoning.

Sometimes, a blunt approach was the most direct way to get the point across.

Shu Yao had her son switch to his human cub form, dressed him, then sent him off to find Shu Xin.

After getting out of bed, Shu Yao walked to the French doors and slid the glass open.

The light beyond the shadows of the room was blinding. The terrace was empty.

Only then was she certain the man had left.

Xiao Juzi scampered off to find Shu Xin, his little feet going PITTER-PATTER.

As it happened, Shu Xin was in Shu Chao Yu’s room.

Shu Chao Yu had just gotten home from his night shift. He had scarfed down every last bit of food in the warmer and, once full, had pulled the covers over his head to pass out.

’Was he even human?’

Shu Xin had woken up early to make breakfast for her darling grandson, but she froze when she saw the food warmer was completely empty. Only after asking the robotic butler did she discover which glutton was responsible for this fine deed.

And so, her temper flared. She stomped into Shu Chao Yu’s room and gave him a piece of her mind.

Her expression didn’t soften until Xiao Juzi appeared. Her voice became gentle and doting. "Sweetheart, why didn’t you sleep in a little longer with Mommy?"

There was still a hint of wariness on Xiao Juzi’s small, upturned face.

In his presence, Shu Xin became even more cautious.

"Grandma, I slept in the sleep pod you bought for me last night," Xiao Juzi said, looking a little nervous. He was like an elementary school student waiting for a teacher to grade his homework, his bright, dark eyes full of anticipation. "Grandma, are you happy?"

Shu Xin was floored.

’She’d thought her little Zaizai had come looking for his grand-uncle. She never imagined he was here for *her*.’

Shu Xin was so moved her eyes began to redden.

She nodded eagerly, her voice trembling as she said, "I am, I am! Grandma is so happy!"

She wanted to move closer to her grandson but forced herself to stay put.

’I can’t scare him.’

’There’s still plenty of time.’

’She was sure that one day, he would grow close to her.’

’Today was a huge step forward!’

Xiao Juzi furrowed his brow, staring at his grandmother with a peculiar expression. His eyes grew pensive for a moment. Who knew what strange and wonderful thoughts were running through that adorable little head of his.

’Oh no! I made Grandma cry!’

’Now Mommy’s going to be mad at me!’

All Xiao Juzi could think about was how angry his mommy would be.

A huge shadow suddenly appeared beside him, "swallowing" the bewildered boy in an instant!

Wrapped in his blanket, Shu Chao Yu had bundled the little guy into his arms. He nuzzled his cheek against Xiao Juzi while pulling him into a hug.

"Sweetheart~ Come sleep with your grand-uncle~"

From the bedside, Shu Xin scolded him with a laugh, "Oh, so you’re alive now, are you? Why were you playing possum when I was yelling at you just now!"
