Chapter 61: Chapter 61: Sending Something Over to Apologize
Shu Xin also couldn’t stop praising her daughter’s cooking, but she had a small appetite. Half a bowl of fish noodle soup and a few bites of pan-fried crispy fish were enough to leave her stuffed.
Shu Chao Yu had a huge appetite. From the moment the meal started, his mouth hadn’t stopped moving, munching away like some kind of rodent.
"Sis," Shu Chao Yu said, his face flush with excitement, "with skills like these, Yaoyao could totally open a brick-and-mortar store!"
Hearing this, Shu Xin had mixed feelings.
"That would be exhausting." How could she bear to let the daughter she had only just found toil so hard? She gave Shu Chao Yu a light swat and warned him sternly, "Don’t you go putting ideas in her head!"
Shu Chao Yu crunched on the crispy fish. "I know. Ultimately, it’s her decision."
Shu Xin shot him a mock glare, clearly disagreeing with her brother’s sentiment.
Shu Chao Yu sighed to himself.
His sister had been coddled her whole life, never knowing true hardship. The greatest suffering she had ever endured was being separated from her own child, followed by an unhappy marriage. Now that mother and daughter were finally reunited, she naturally wanted to make up for the dozen-plus years she’d lost and let her daughter live a life of comfort.
’But she doesn’t understand,’ he thought. ’People who have been through real adversity don’t want to just waste away in a cozy little nest.’
Seeing her brother ignore her, Shu Xin gave him a petulant shove and snatched the jar of snacks he was hugging.
"Sis!" Shu Chao Yu whined. 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚
"Stop eating!" she said, her expression stern. Still, she couldn’t resist shoving a handful of crispy fish into her brother’s mouth. "Set some aside to give to the neighbors."
Shu Chao Yu was baffled. "You mean our mysterious new neighbors who just moved in? If anyone’s giving gifts, shouldn’t it be them giving something to us?"
’Established residents welcoming the newcomers? That’s not how it works.’
"I’m not talking to you anymore!" Shu Xin hugged the jar of snacks and went to find Shu Yao, who was putting Xiao Juzi to bed. When she reached the bedroom door, she saw that her adorable little grandson was already sound asleep, so she didn’t knock.
She beckoned to Shu Yao, who was sitting by the bed.
"Mom, why aren’t you resting yet?"
"That day, you..." Shu Xin began gently, but after only a few words, her expression instantly soured. "It was that man, Lin!"
The mere mention of Lin Yaodong was enough to sour her mood.
"What about him?" Shu Yao asked, confused.
Shu Xin said, quite displeased, "We have new neighbors who just moved in. The day that shameless bastard Lin showed up, he caused a ruckus next door. I was thinking we should take something over to them as an apology."
Even though they weren’t the ones making the noise, the incident was ultimately related to them.
They were neighbors now, and they would be seeing each other constantly. It wouldn’t do to get off on the wrong foot over a small matter.
Shu Yao nodded. "Okay, I’ll go with you."
Shu Xin had already decided: they would give them a portion of the fish soup and pan-fried crispy fish her daughter had made during her livestream today.
’It might not look like much, but it was a delicacy you couldn’t just buy anywhere!’
The mother and daughter took the food and went next door.
By now, dusk had fallen. The house next door was brightly lit, which meant the owner was home.
Shu Xin rang the doorbell.
A robotic butler answered the door.
"Good evening, ladies." The robotic butler’s voice was surprisingly warm.
Shu Xin asked politely, "Excuse me, is the owner of the house in?"
Robotic butler: "The master is busy with official matters. Is there anything I can assist you with?"
’The owner isn’t here?’
Shu Xin looked at her daughter. "Maybe we should come back another day?"
’Another day?’ Shu Yao glanced down at the food in her hands.
’If they brought this back, her uncle would definitely devour it in a few bites.’
Apparently, Shu Xin had thought of that too.
