I Just Started College, How Could I Become a Part-Time Papa?!
Chapter 218 - 119: I’ll Take Care of You Even if You’re Paralyzed
Chapter 218: Chapter 119: I’ll Take Care of You Even if You’re Paralyzed
"If you’re not good to your daddy in the future, just see how I’ll punish you!" Jiang Wanyi said, pointing at Mili, clearly at her wit’s end.
"Alright, that’s enough. Let’s eat first. It’s not a big deal."
"Okay."
Chen Yuan held the child, eating with one hand.
Jiang Wanyi felt a pang in her heart, but there was nothing she could do.
For some reason, she thought of what the doctor had said.
’If Chen Yuan were really my husband, I’d definitely bear him a son, so we could have one of each.’
"There’s more in the pot. I’ll go get you some," Jiang Wanyi said when she saw Chen Yuan’s bowl was empty.
"No, that’s alright. I had to force myself to eat this much."
Chen Yuan touched the child’s forehead. "It’s fine. The fever’s gone down."
Jiang Wanyi looked at the child too. "She does seem to have a bit more energy. Why don’t you put her down and let her play by herself for a while."
"Okay."
Chen Yuan placed the child in her playpen. Jiang Wanyi cleared the dishes, washed them, and came right back.
Mili was doing much better. At the very least, she could sit up by leaning against the playpen fence. Chen Yuan lay on the floor next to her, playing with her the whole time.
"Do you think... now that the fever’s gone down, she might be all better for good?"
"It’s possible. We have to look on the bright side. All kids get sick. It’s completely normal," Chen Yuan said.
"Mm."
Chen Yuan’s reassurance made Jiang Wanyi feel much better, though her face was still haggard.
She rested her cheek in one hand, her hair falling loosely around her face. She didn’t have the energy to tidy it up.
"Watch the baby, what are you looking at me for?"
"I just feel so indebted to you. I keep wanting to say thank you."
"Don’t say anything. Just watch the baby."
"I know."
Jiang Wanyi pouted and turned her attention back to the child.
Seeing Mili holding a toy and playing by herself, she felt incredibly relieved.
’When I was at my most helpless and desperate, Chen Yuan came without a second thought and helped me shoulder everything.’
’I just hope that once the fever breaks this time, she’ll be all better for good.’
But reality is often cruel. That night, she threw up again, and her temperature shot right back up afterward.
After giving her medicine, Chen Yuan carried the child to the bathtub and gave her a sponge bath to bring her temperature down.
"Why does the fever keep coming back? Should we take her to the doctor again?"
Jiang Wanyi said anxiously, looking at a listless Mili.
"We just took her this morning. There’s no need to go again," Chen Yuan said.
"Let’s wait another day or two. If she’s still like this, we can take her then."
"Okay."
Thanks to the medicine and the bath, her fever subsided and she seemed a little better again.
That night, the three of them slept in the master bedroom again, with the child between them.
Watching the child sleep peacefully, the knot of anxiety in Jiang Wanyi’s chest loosened slightly.
For some reason, she suddenly found herself in a much better mood.
’This scene really looks like a family of three lulling their child to sleep.’
’The child is happy, and so am I.’
’It seemed everyone who misunderstood my relationship with Chen Yuan praised him for being a good husband.’
’And it seemed that was actually the case.’
’If only I were still a carefree college student...’
...
「The next morning.」
When Jiang Wanyi woke up, she realized that the child and Chen Yuan were no longer beside her.
She shot up, her clothes disheveled, and ran to the guest room. There, she saw Chen Yuan holding the child, fast asleep while leaning against the headboard.
A blanket was draped over the child, and another covered Chen Yuan’s lap.
She couldn’t stop the tears from streaming down her face.
She didn’t know when Chen Yuan had left their bed, but she knew why.
’The baby must have started crying, and he, afraid of waking me, had brought her in here.’
’I don’t know how long he’d been sleeping while holding the baby, but from the way they were positioned, it was very possible he’d held her like that all night.’
As if sensing the noise at the doorway, Chen Yuan opened his eyes. He saw Jiang Wanyi standing there and put a finger to his lips, then gently laid the child down.
Mili was sleeping soundly. As he placed her on the bed, she just rolled over without waking.
As he got off the bed, he staggered and nearly fell.
His leg had fallen asleep.
Jiang Wanyi rushed forward and helped Chen Yuan steady himself.
"I’m fine. My leg just fell asleep."
He walked a few steps, grimacing, before the feeling slowly returned.
"Come over here, let me massage it for you."
Jiang Wanyi had Chen Yuan lie down on the sofa. She sat on the other end and had him rest his leg on her lap.
"Don’t. It’ll be fine in a minute."
Chen Yuan put his leg down. He couldn’t stand being waited on like this.
"Anyone who didn’t know better would think I was paralyzed and getting physical therapy at home."
"Don’t worry. If you really did become paralyzed, I’d take care of you just like this."
"In that case, I’ll try to get it sooner so you can take care of me for a few more years."
"I’m going to pinch you! Don’t ever say things like that."
Chen Yuan laced his hands behind his head, closed his eyes, and comfortably enjoyed her service.
"I’m starting to feel like a feudal lord."
"Then I’ll let you be the feudal lord for today. Why didn’t you wake me up last night?"
"You haven’t been sleeping well either. I could handle her on my own, I didn’t need you."
"Still, you shouldn’t have been by yourself. I could have at least helped."
"It was just giving her some medicine. Nothing major," Chen Yuan said.
"She was actually doing pretty well yesterday. I used a fever-reducing suppository last night, and it lasted until morning—almost ten hours. I figure she’ll be fine in another day or two."
"Holding her like that... you didn’t sleep for the rest of the night, did you?"
"She’s uncomfortable. She can’t sleep lying down, but she’s a little better if I hold her," Chen Yuan said.
"This isn’t the time to think about being tired. Her comfort is more important than anything."
Jiang Wanyi’s hand trembled. ’He’s truly putting all his energy into caring for Mili, even more than I am, her own mother.’
’And yet, I can’t do anything right. I have to rely on him for everything.’
