Chapter 145: Chapter 89: Is There Any Law Left
"Uh-huh, got it. Thanks, Auntie."
Fearing Song Jianye would get nervous, Chen Yuan quickly ended the conversation.
"We’re about to head back, so we’ll talk to you later."
"Don’t forget to take her out for a nice meal when you get back."
"I know. Hanging up."
’She’s my good friend, and she’s certainly presentable. There was no need to be secretive; of course I had to introduce her to my family.’
’Just like how Song Jianye introduced me to her aunt.’
His phone chimed. Comrade Li had transferred 500 yuan to him.
’She really went all out.’
He accepted the transfer.
"Look, I’ve found a great way to get rich," Chen Yuan said, handing her his phone.
"Your mom sent you money!"
"She told me to use this money to treat you to a meal. From now on, whenever I’m short on cash, I’ll just get you on a video call with her. We’ll never have to worry about money for food again."
Song Jianye’s big eyes darted around for a moment, and she took out her phone as well.
"I’ll video call my uncle and have him show his support, too."
"No, no, no! You can’t do that. It’s totally different."
When a guy does this, his family gives their full support. Not only will they not overthink it, but they might even give a little extra.
But it was different for a girl.
’I already seem like a bit of a troublemaker to my aunt. If I video call my uncle to ask for money, I’ll really look the part.’
"What’s so different? I need funds to hang out with friends, too. I’ll have him send over ten thousand to start."
"No way, no way. That’s not how you farm for gold. Long story short, it’s fine for me to do it, but not for you," Chen Yuan explained.
"Then what do we do if we don’t have enough money to hang out?"
"I might not be as rich as you, but I can still afford to take care of my good friend."
She cupped her chin in her hands and turned to look at Chen Yuan.
"What if you make other good friends in the future?"
"I won’t. You’re my only good friend."
"Hee hee..."
Song Jianye’s smile was brilliant, shining brightly like the morning sun breaking through clouds, like a new moon reflecting on snow. The vast, clear sky seemed to exist only as a backdrop for her smile.
The two ended their afternoon of foraging for wild vegetables. But far away in Ice City, in Chen Yuan’s home, the situation was quite different.
"This girl is really lovely."
During the video call earlier, Chen Jingshan had been lying on the other side of the sofa, looking at documents from his work group chat.
But after hearing Song Jianye’s voice, he shot up as if he’d been electrocuted. He didn’t get in the frame, though, just watched from the side.
"Did you see? They were sitting together, and their shoulders were almost at the same height. This girl can’t be short," Chen Jingshan said, very pleased.
There’s an old saying, "A tall person looks good even standing by the door with no clothes on." In the Chinese pursuit of beauty, height is always a hurdle you can’t get around.
"She certainly isn’t short," Li Fanghui said, but there was no happiness in her eyes.
"School only started a little over two months ago and he’s already got a girlfriend. My son’s really something else," Chen Jingshan said proudly.
"Not necessarily. They might just be friends."
"How could that be? He even showed her to you on a video call. It’s definitely not just a normal friendship," Chen Jingshan said.
"You know what your son’s personality is like. If she were really his girlfriend, do you think he’d admit it so openly?"
Chen Jingshan was at a loss for words. What she said seemed to make a lot of sense.
His son wasn’t the rash type. It was unlikely he’d introduce a new girlfriend to the family so soon.
"But even if they’re just good friends, he probably wouldn’t have said anything, especially since it’s a girl."
"I’m starting to suspect there’s something wrong with him," Li Fanghui said, her expression grave.
"What do you mean, wrong?"
"Earlier, he said, ’The weather is nice today, so I brought my good friend to the botanical garden.’ Doesn’t that sound stilted and weird to you?"
Chen Jingshan thought about it. He hadn’t thought much of it earlier, but now that he considered it, it did feel a little odd.
"I remember now!" Li Fanghui slapped her thigh. "When we dropped him off at school, he had a roommate whose clothes and style were... very different from everyone else’s."
Chen Jingshan was shocked, a look of panic on his face.
"He’s not... gay, is he?"
...
After they finished foraging, the two didn’t rush back.
They watched some squirrels for a while, then tried to catch fish in the artificial lake. They got lucky today and caught a few small fry, which they put in their little bucket before heading back with their tools.
Chen Yuan, for his part, had no idea that his parents now suspected he might be gay.
"What should we do with this dandelion?" Song Jianye asked on the way back.
"I tried a little just now. It’s a bit bitter, but I can handle the taste."
"There’s only one, not even enough for a single dish," Chen Yuan said.
"Let’s dry it in the sun and make it into tea for Uncle Zhang."
"Okay."
Song Jianye was cheerful the whole way back, taking lots of pictures of the dandelion in her hand and the small fish in the bucket.
The orange sunset glowed on her face, making her fair skin seem translucent. Not only were there no acne scars or anything of the sort, but you couldn’t even see her pores.
Her skin was hardly any different from Mili’s.
’My good friend is so beautiful, so presentable. Of course I had to show her to my parents.’
’Though there was definitely a risk of being misunderstood. I’ll just have to explain it to them later.’
BZZZT—
His phone vibrated. It was a message from Comrade Li.
Comrade Li: "Let me tell you, I don’t object to you finding a partner in college, but if you dare to be gay, I’ll break your legs!"
’Wait...’
Chen Yuan’s brain short-circuited.
He had even prepared a speech to explain to his parents that Song Jianye wasn’t his girlfriend.
But he never would have imagined they’d think he was gay!
Is there any justice in this world!!!
