Chapter 229: Kinetic-Nova Bracer

  • Next Chapter

The stealth transport hummed through the night sky. The cargo hold was small and functional, with two rows of jump seats bolted to the walls and a single overhead light flickering whenever the transport hit turbulence. The cockpit was sealed, the flight running on autopilot, leaving the hold to the three of them.

Cora and Sera sat in the rear seats. Their eyes were closed, not asleep but resting, though even at rest, two Rank 2 assassins stayed alert enough to notice a threat from fifty meters away. The woman who had helped murder their master was dead now. They could deal with everything else in the morning.

Holden sat near the front with the Diamond Chest in his lap.

The System had rewarded him with the Diamond Chest after Serith’s defeat. Its prismatic surface caught the flickering light and split it into shifting colors that crawled across the walls, changing from red to orange, green, and violet.

Holden pressed his thumb against the seal, and six petals opened around the top. White light burst from inside, pure and blinding, filling the cargo hold like lightning had gone off in the darkness.

Inside the chest was a bracer. A simple forearm guard meant to protect the arm and wrist from incoming attacks.

Except there was nothing simple about this one.

The metal was dark, the same light-swallowing color as the Eclipse-Sun Sword, but unlike the sword’s shifting darkness, this surface remained perfectly still. It reflected nothing, swallowing every bit of light that touched it. Three runes ran along the length of the bracer, glowing amber, crimson, and white.

[Item Acquired: Rank 4 Kinetic-Nova Bracer]

[Type: Passive Energy Storage and Release]

[Rank: 4]

[Passive: Kinetic Absorption. The bracer automatically absorbs the kinetic energy of any physical blow that contacts the wearer’s forearm. Absorbed energy is stored inside the bracer. Storage Capacity: Unlimited.]

[Active: Nova Release. The wearer can release all stored kinetic energy in a single shockwave. The power of the shockwave increases with the amount of stored energy. At full capacity, the shockwave is equivalent to a Rank 4 explosive detonation.]

[Passive: Impact Negation. While energy is stored inside the bracer, the wearer’s forearm is immune to kinetic damage. The bracer absorbs the force completely, leaving the arm unharmed.]

Holden lifted the bracer from the chest. It was heavy due to the dense Rank 4 energy packed inside the metal.

He slid it onto his left forearm. The bracer tightened on its own, the enchanted silk inside bonding to his skin while the dark metal settled against his Aether-Steel arm as though it had been made for him.

[Kinetic-Nova Bracer Equipped!]

[Left Forearm.]

[Passive: Kinetic Absorption Active.]

[Passive: Impact Negation Active.]

[Stored Energy: 0%]

[Active: Nova Release Available.]

Holden flexed his left hand. The bracer moved with him without any resistance. He took a moment to check his equipment. The Kinetic-Nova Bracer covered his left forearm, the Blood-Amber Ring sat on his right index finger, and the Sovereign’s Pendant rested against his neck.

"Good bracer," Holden muttered as he opened his System interface.

[Current KP: 1,750,290]

[Multiplier: 10,000x]

[KP Booster: 2x Active]

[Fighter Rank: Rank 3 (7-Star, Hidden)]

He stared at the number for a moment. It was the largest balance he’d ever held, built through weeks of relentless farming, battlefield operations, and Syndicate kills.

Then he opened the breakthrough menu.

[Direct Breakthrough: Rank 3, 7-Star to 8-Star]

[Cost: 700,000 KP]

[Confirm? Y/N]

Seven hundred thousand.

He had more than enough, and the purchase would leave him with 1,050,290 KP. That was still a healthy balance, enough to keep fighting and deal with whatever came next. The real question was whether his foundation could handle another breakthrough.

The push from 6-Star to 7-Star had been violent, fueled by rage and Nightmare Mode farming. It had damaged his energy center badly enough to leave little cracks in his foundation. Three days of rest had repaired most of it, and his processor estimated his foundation stability at ninety-two percent.

That meant the risk was low.

But it wasn’t zero.

The names remaining on Vespera’s list were all Rank 4 cultivators. Holden was still only Rank 3 7-Star.

The gap was too wide.

He had defeated Vandiba by dropping a building on him and taken down Serith by resisting her psychic control, but the remaining targets would not all make things that easy. Some would be combat specialists. Others could be artificers, tacticians, or cultivators with abilities he hadn’t seen before.

He needed more strength.

The foundation would have to take the risk. The war wasn’t going to wait for him.

"Confirm."

The System took the points.

[700,000 KP Deducted.]

[Breakthrough Initiating.]

The energy hit him, and this time it felt completely different.

His previous breakthrough had been explosive, cracking walls and shaking buildings. This one pulled everything inward. Power rushed toward his center, compressing tighter and tighter until it felt like an ocean being forced into a single point.

There was no sharp pain. Only pressure.

His Aether-Steel body responded first. The metal within his bones became denser, stronger, changing into something even he couldn’t fully describe. His meridians thickened instead of expanding, allowing them to carry far more power without taking up extra space. His muscles didn’t grow larger either. Every fiber simply became more efficient, capable of producing more force without needing more mass.

From the outside, almost nothing changed.

Inside, everything had.

The Star Core Elixir’s recovery effect surged through him, helping stabilize the new power while the Ember-Silk Cloak pulled away the excess heat. The Blood-Amber Ring pulsed against his finger. The Kinetic-Nova Bracer vibrated around his forearm, reacting to the sudden increase in energy. Even the Sovereign’s Pendant flared as his equipment adjusted to the new power flooding through his body.

Then his aura spread.

It settled over the cargo hold like a deep, heavy weight. The metal walls groaned under the pressure.

Cora and Sera’s eyes snapped open. Their hands moved to their swords on instinct, though neither actually drew.

The air had become thick enough to make breathing difficult.

"Master Voss," Cora said, her voice tight. "Your energy..."

"I know," Holden replied. "It’ll pass."

A few seconds later, the pressure reached its peak and faded.

The results appeared in front of him.

[Rank 3, 8-Star Achieved!]

[Breakthrough Complete!]

[Aether-Steel Density: Increased 45%]

[Energy Capacity: Increased 70%]

[Physical Force Output: Increased 50%]

[Movement Speed: Increased 25%]

[Foundation Stability: 96%]

[Multiplier: 10,000x]

[KP Booster: 2x Active]

[Fighter Rank: Rank 3 (8-Star,)]

One more star would take him to 9-Star. After that, only Rank 4 stood between him and the level where Vespera’s killers could no longer look down on him.

For the first time, the top of the mountain didn’t seem impossibly far away.

Holden sat quietly and felt the difference. He was denser, stronger, and heavier in a way that had nothing to do with size. His arms and legs looked the same, but every movement carried more force. The old 7-Star version of himself already felt weaker by comparison.

The transport began its descent.

Through the small window, the Capital came into view. Lights filled the streets, and the familiar skyline rose in the distance. Somewhere in the district sat the villa, a quiet building that had become home to his sister, his team, and the growing collection of loot he’d gathered during a war most people didn’t even know existed.

The transport touched down on the private strip behind the villa. The engines wound down, and the cargo door opened.

Holden stepped onto the landing strip. Every light in the villa was on, warm yellow spilling through the windows and across the garden.

The front door opened, and Lyra came out first.

She ran straight toward him, he hair flying behind her. She wore a simple shirt and pants, without armor or weapons. The moment she’d heard the transport engines, her body had moved before her mind could catch up.

Lyra reached him and wrapped both arms around his neck, burying her face against his shoulder. She held on tightly, like someone who had spent days refusing to imagine what it would feel like if he didn’t come home.

"You’re back," she said against his shoulder, her voice muffled. "You’re really back."

"I’m back."

Holden wrapped both arms around her and held her close. The new bracer covered his left forearm, but he kept the metal away from her as he held her gently. For a few seconds, the battlefield, the Syndicate, and Vespera’s killers all felt far away.

Emric and Renna came out next.

Emric still had his shield strapped to his arm even at home. He looked at Holden with the calm expression of someone who had spent the last few days planning for every possible disaster and was simply glad that the one thing he couldn’t plan for had come home safely.

"Welcome back," Emric said. "The Fortress held. Zero breaches. I set up a rotating watch with three-hour shifts and two alert levels. The northwest wall took the worst damage. Structural integrity is down to seventy-eight percent, and I’ve already drafted a repair proposal."

"Emric," Holden said.

"Yes?"

"Hi."

Emric blinked in confusion.

"Hello."

Renna appeared right behind him, bow in hand instead of resting across her back. She’d apparently carried it around the villa for three days, ready to shoot anything that looked even slightly suspicious.

Her eyes were bright with relief, and when Renna was relieved, she had only one volume.

"YOU’RE BACK! Finally! I was going crazy! Emric wouldn’t let me come after you because I’d be, and I quote, a liability. I’m not a liability! I’m an asset! A very well-armed asset with sharp arrows!"

"She’s not wrong about the arrows," Emric said. "She also reorganized my notebook by color, which wasn’t helpful."

"The colors were helpful! Blue for defense, red for offense, green for supplies!"

"I use a numerical system."

"Numbers are boring, Emric!"

Holden laughed.

It was the kind that came out when he was around people who knew him before the killing started.

Lyra pulled back and studied his face. Her eyes moved over him as if checking for injuries she couldn’t see.

"Are you okay?" she asked.

It was the same question she’d asked him every day since he’d left.

"Better than ever" Holden said.

Not perfect.

But better.

Lyra smiled, and the relief in her eyes was impossible to miss.

Behind her, Cora and Sera stepped out of the transport and stopped at the bottom of the ramp. Their eyes moved across the garden, taking in the people standing around Holden.

The silver-haired girl beside him.

The shield-bearing boy with glasses.

The loud archer.

Cora looked at Emric and Renna, remembering the people she’d once dismissed as deadweight. They were the same people who had held a fortress while she and her sister hunted Rank 4 cultivators across the continent.

"We finished it," Cora said. "Master Voss led us well."

"Two targets eliminated," Sera added. "Five remain."

Emric looked at them carefully. These were the two assassins who had once demanded his badge and challenged the team. Now they had knelt before Holden and sworn their loyalty as Vespera’s final blades.

"Twelve dead," Emric said. "Forty-three wounded. Three major assaults repelled. The northwest wall took the heaviest damage, but the formation held."

"Twelve dead," Cora repeated. "Acceptable losses for a position that size."

"They were people," Renna said.

Her voice wasn’t angry. Just firm.

"They were soldiers," Sera replied. "Soldiers die in wars. Master Voss’s orders held that wall, and the wall holding is what matters."

Renna looked at her, then at Cora, before glancing toward Holden. He watched the exchange quietly, measuring the distance between the two groups.

"They’re both right," Holden said. "The losses were real, and the wall held. One doesn’t erase the other."

His eyes moved across the group.

"Emric. Renna. Lyra. These are Cora and Sera, Vespera’s Blades. They serve with me now."

Emric nodded. "Understood. I’ll add them to the tactical roster."

Holden looked at Renna.

"Don’t shoot them."

Renna smiled.

"No promises."

"Cora. Sera."

Both women turned toward him.

"They’re your equals. Not subordinates and not rivals. Treat them that way."

Cora studied Emric for a moment. Her eyes settled on the shield strapped to his arm and the notebook tucked into his pocket. This was the boy who had once held a collapsing ceiling long enough for everyone else to escape.

She gave him a small nod.

"The wall held," Cora said. "Well done."

Emric pushed his glasses higher.

"Without General Balthazar, the odds of the wall holding were about thirty-one percent. We improved on those."

Sera turned toward Renna. Her eyes dropped to the bow and the spotless arrows.

"Eighty-seven arrows," she said. "Impressive accuracy for a fight that long."

Renna blinked.

"Did you just compliment me? You complimented me? The girl who pinned you to a wall?"

"The pins were well placed," Sera said. "Good angle. Good force."

"Thank you! I think. I’m not sure if that’s a compliment or a threat."

"It’s both," Cora said.

Renna stared at the Twins for a second before bursting into laughter.

"I like them," she said. "They’re terrifying. I like terrifying."

Holden looked at the group standing together beneath the night sky.

The shield-bearer.

The archer.

The frost warrior.

The two assassins.

For months, they had been separate pieces of his life. Team Soup had fought beside him through battles, while Cora and Sera carried Vespera’s legacy. Now, for the first time, the two sides stood together.

His team.

His family.

His blades.

The lines between them were finally disappearing.

Holden smiled.

It was the real smile Lyra had been waiting for since the mess hall, the same one Maeve would recognize the next time they spoke. The smile of someone who had been dragged through darkness and still managed to come home himself.

"Let’s go inside," he said. "I’ve got loot to catalog and five more names to cross off."
