Chapter 228: For the Vanguard
Serith crawled across the floor. Not toward the door or the window, but away from Holden and the Twins waiting in the doorway. Away from everything. Her arms hung uselessly at her sides, fingers scraping against the floor as her knees pushed her forward in a slow, desperate shuffle.
She didn’t get far. Her back struck the base of the velvet couch, the same couch she’d been sitting on when Holden walked in and the same one he’d thrown her against minutes ago. She was trapped between the couch and the wall, her black dress bunched around her legs and hair hanging across her face.
Slowly, she looked up at Holden. His eyes stared down at her with something worse than anger.
Disgust.
"Wait," she said.
Her voice sounded nothing like the smooth, hypnotic tone that had made it a weapon for decades. What remained was small and weak, the voice of a woman who had just realized her power was gone and that the man standing over her wasn’t the kind to offer second chances.
"Wait," she said again. "Please. I can give you anything. This casino, the whole operation, the floating city. It’s worth billions. Credits, Aether Crystals, weapons, information. I know things that could bring entire governments down. It can all be yours."
She tried to raise her hands, but they wouldn’t respond. The paralysis still held her nerves, leaving only a few useless twitches in her fingers.
"All you have to do is let me walk," she pleaded. "I’ll disappear. You’ll never see me again. I’ll leave the casino, leave the continent, go somewhere no one can find me. Just let me go."
Holden looked at the Rank 4 cultivator who had enslaved three thousand people and built an empire on stolen minds. Now she was begging for her life with the same mouth she’d used to blow pink poison into his face.
"No."
The word was final.
"Please." Serith’s voice cracked. "I’m begging you. Whatever you want, just name it. I can get it for you."
"You don’t have anything I want."
"Everyone wants something. Everyone has a price. What’s yours? Power? Land? Titles? Women? Men? I can provide anything. I have contacts across the continent, allies in governments. I have..."
"You targeted the wrong academy, Serith."
The words struck her harder than a blow. Her eyes widened as recognition finally replaced the desperation on her face.
"You’re not a gambler," she whispered. "You’re not an heir. You’re Academy."
"Vanguard Academy. Instructor Vespera’s personal disciple."
The color drained from her face. Whatever composure remained crumbled instantly. She knew the name. More importantly, she knew exactly what it meant.
"Vespera," she whispered. "We killed Vespera."
"You helped kill her. You and your Syndicate opened the door. You set the stage. You engineered the war that took her life."
"She was going to expose us," Serith said quickly. "She found the Syndicate. She was building a case. If she’d gone public, everything we’d built would have collapsed. Decades of work, decades of planning. We had to stop her."
"So you killed her."
"We didn’t kill her directly. The Abyss took her. We opened the rift and created the conditions, but she walked into the Epicenter herself. She chose to fight."
"She chose to fight because you made the fight necessary."
Serith opened her mouth, then closed it again. No excuse came. The justifications had finally run dry, leaving only a woman on the floor staring up at the consequences of what she’d done.
Holden stepped back and dismissed his sword, the Eclipse-Sun Sword disappearing into his Inventory. Then he leaned against the wall beside the door and crossed his arms, his gaze moving from Cora to Sera.
"This kill belongs to you."
The Twins said nothing. They only looked at each other for half a second, a glance carrying twenty years of shared loss and purpose. Then they turned back to Serith.
She scrambled backward, but her useless arms couldn’t push her away. Her heels slipped across the floor as she tried to create distance. Her eyes grew wide, the pupils almost swallowing the color around them.
"No. Please. I’m begging you. I have money, I have power, I have anything you want. Anything! Please!"
"You killed our master," Cora said.
Her voice was steady. Not loud or angry.
"You created the war," she continued. "You sent the monsters."
"You helped open the door," Sera added. Her voice carried the same calm weight. "You took the only person who ever cared about us and left us with nothing."
Serith was crying now. Her face had gone red, tears and mucus running freely as she struggled to breathe. She stared up at the two women Vespera had raised, the two people who had come to collect the debt left by their master’s death.
"I’ll give you anything," she sobbed. "Anything. I’ll serve you. I’ll be your slave. I’ll do whatever you want. Just don’t..."
"For the Vanguard," Cora said.
"For the Vanguard," Sera echoed.
They spoke together, the same words at the same moment.
The short swords moved together.
Two blades swept in from opposite sides, striking the same point on either side of Serith’s neck. The swords crossed behind her head like closing scissors.
With her Rank 4 aura gone, there was nothing left to protect her.
Serith’s body went still.
The light faded from her wide violet eyes, and she slumped forward onto the marble floor.
The Twins stood over her with their swords extended. They held the position for a few seconds, confirming the kill, then lowered their weapons together.
Inside Holden’s mind, the System chimed.
[Lady Serith (Rank 4, 2-Star) Defeated!]
[Raid Coordination Bonus! Tactical Leadership Award!]
[+20,000 KP! 2x KP Booster Active! KP Doubled!]
[+40,000 KP!]
The System had rewarded the successful coordination, the careful planning that had brought down a Rank 4 cultivator without a single civilian casualty.
The Twins turned toward him. Then they bowed, lowering themselves until their foreheads touched the floor.
It was the same bow they’d given him in the barracks, but this one carried something more than loyalty.
Gratitude.
"Thank you, Master Voss," Cora said.
"He wouldn’t let us kill Lord Vandiba," Sera said. "That kill was his. But he gave us this one."
"Vespera would have wanted us to finish it," Cora said.
"And now we have," Sera replied.
Holden looked at them. Two women who had once been orphans, assassins, rivals, and weapons. Now they stood as the ones carrying Vespera’s will forward.
He gave them a slow nod.
"Clean your blades. We have work to do."
Holden turned away from the body and looked around the penthouse. Gold-leaf walls surrounded the ruined furniture, while the crystal chandelier still swayed overhead. The bar remained fully stocked, untouched by the chaos. Then his eyes settled on a large painting hanging between two gold-leaf panels.
It was an ornate oil painting of mountains and a lake, the kind of decoration bought by someone with more money than taste. But Holden had noticed something else when he’d first entered the room. The wall behind the painting was cooler than the rest of the room.
There was empty space behind it.
A hidden vault.
He walked over, lifted the painting from the wall, and set it aside. A circular vault door had been built into the wall, forged from dark enchanted steel. Instead of numbers, the lock was covered in a sequence of glowing runes.
The enchantment had been tied to Serith’s energy, but with its owner dead, the binding had already broken. The runes no longer mattered. The door itself was still locked.
Holden placed a hand against the mechanism and pushed.
Aether-Steel fingers backed by Rank 3 strength crushed the lock. Metal bent, runes cracked, and the heavy door swung open.
The vault was only ten feet by ten feet, with shelves covering the walls and crates stacked across the floor. Its contents, however, were a fortune. Blue-white Aether Crystals filled shelf after shelf, military grade and high purity. Holden counted four hundred and twelve, each worth around fifty thousand credits on the open market.
The lower shelves held bundles of physical credit notes, worth tens of millions. There were also rare pills, skill manuals, enchanted jewelry, forged identity papers, encrypted data drives, and twenty-three Rank 3 energy cores. It was enough valuable equipment to fill an academy’s armory.
Holden opened his System Inventory and began clearing the room.
The vault was empty six minutes later.
What had taken Serith years to collect was gone in minutes.
[Aether Crystals (Military Grade) Acquired! x412]
[Illegal Credits Acquired: 23,400,000]
[Rare Pills Acquired: x47]
[Skill Manuals Acquired: x12]
[Encrypted Data Drives Acquired: x8]
[Rank 3 Energy Cores Acquired: x23]
[Black Market Documents Acquired: x1,200+]
Holden reached into his Inventory and pulled out Vespera’s journal, the leather-bound book with its sharp handwriting and map marked by seven red circles. He turned to the second page.
2. Lady Serith. Rank 4, 2-Star. Mind manipulation and illusion. Location: The Gilded Lily, Lake Sereth.
He took out the same pen and drew a line through Lady Serith’s name.
Two names crossed off.
Five remained.
Holden closed the journal and looked toward the Twins. They stood by the door with their swords sheathed, their faces calm now that the mission was over.
Far below them, three thousand people were waking from a nightmare. The psychic fog had lifted. Enslaved staff were free, the brainwashed guards lay unconscious, and the woman who had controlled them all was dead.
The Gilded Lily was finished. Not as a building, but as an empire built on control and misery. The casino would be seized, the freed civilians evacuated, and the evidence handed over to the Vanguard.
Holden wouldn’t be around for any of that.
Five names remained on Vespera’s list, and the hunt was only beginning.
He tucked the journal into his Inventory and walked toward the door.
"Let’s move," he said. "We have a flight to catch."
