I Can Devour Spirits

Chapter 675 - 419: Beneath the Abyss (Part 2)

Duan Rong walked in between Wang Yue and Lu Geng, gazing forward, only to see an endless darkness at the end of the corridor.

Duan Rong sighed lightly, thinking this journey would be long.

But after walking merely a few hundred meters, they reached the corridor’s end.

At the end of the corridor, they turned into a certain place.

This stone chamber was surprisingly spacious, with a high ceiling, giving an instant feeling of openness upon entering.

Most astonishingly, there was the sound of wind roaring through this space, making the torch in Lu Geng’s hand crackle loudly.

Duan Rong’s expression tightened. How could there be the sound of wind in this confined space?

He quickly noticed something, seeing a dark fissure on the floor of the narrow stone chamber, where the wind was blowing through.

In this narrow and high space, the walls were fixed with large black iron rings at regular intervals, and on each ring, a child’s arm-thick iron chain was tied.

The chains were fixed on the stone wall, yet stretched into the dark fissure where the wind was blowing.

By this time, the others had each stood in front of an iron chain, but Duan Rong still lingered at the entrance, processing the astonishing and eerie scene.

Fan Hongjiao shook the iron chain in her hand and said, "Little Junior Brother, come and grab a chain. Slide down from here and it’s the Dark Forest."

Upon hearing this, Duan Rong walked over, stood beside Fan Hongjiao, and reached out to grab a cold iron chain.

Fan Hongjiao instructed him, "Slide all the way down until your feet hit the ground."

With that, Fan Hongjiao suddenly jumped, leaping into the dark fissure, instantly swallowed by the darkness.

Then Wu Shidao and Wang Yue almost simultaneously entered the dark fissure.

Lu Geng glanced at Duan Rong without speaking, tossed the torch by Duan Rong’s feet, and then grabbed a chain, jumping into the dark fissure as well.

The torch fell at Duan Rong’s feet, wildly fluttering due to the strong wind blowing from the fissure.

Now, he was alone in the space.

Duan Rong looked at the chain he was holding and glanced at the fissure at his feet, which seemed like a giant beast’s mouth, slightly opened but unfathomable in depth.

Duan Rong took a deep breath, still clutching the chain, and jumped down.

The chain was smooth and cold in his hand, as Duan Rong slowly slid down, realizing Fan Hongjiao and the others were no longer around, obviously sliding down at a much faster pace.

His eyesight gradually adapted to the darkness, allowing him to discern objects faintly in the pitch-black environment.

He could see a nearby chain trembling intensely, knowing it was due to Fan Hongjiao’s rapid descent.

He was surrounded by dull black stone walls, seemingly in a deep underground fissure.

After adapting to the surroundings, Duan Rong’s mood stabilized; his mind focusing, he released his Divine Sense, observing the fissure extending beyond his Divine Sense’s range.

Within the scope of his Divine Sense, Duan Rong clearly sensed other chains shaking violently nearby.

Clearly, everyone else was sliding down swiftly too!

Duan Rong’s gaze sharpened as he started sliding down rapidly, his grip suddenly loosening, making his body plummet with a swoosh, struggling to breathe only after descending several meters, thus grabbing the chain sharply, causing the chain to tremble violently.

With a sudden kick, Duan Rong gasped for air, releasing his grip again, allowing himself to fall further.

After an unknown period, Duan Rong paused again, wildly clinging to the chain that shook violently against his descent, his body swaying like a leaf in a storm.

Duan Rong peered downward, seeing nothing but endless darkness beneath him, the wildly shaking chain seemingly extending into the Nine Netherworld.

Fan Hongjiao, Wu Shidao, Lu Geng, and Wang Yue had landed on a grassland emitting a mystical light, with several child-arm-thick chains hanging down from the black stone wall behind them.

Wang Yue clapped his hands and said, "How long do you think it’ll take for Little Junior Brother to come down?"

Fan Hongjiao snorted, "Definitely faster than you! The first time you came here, the three of us waited for you for three whole hours!"

Wang Yue protested, "Senior Sister, why do you always remember my embarrassing moments so vividly and criticize me every time? Little Junior Brother may look vigorous, but he might not necessarily be faster than me. We should find a place to rest. We might need to wait a while!"

"I don’t think that’s necessary," Wu Shidao interjected. "Look at how violently that chain is shaking; I reckon Little Junior Brother will be down soon."

Turning his head, Wang Yue indeed saw the chain next to the one used by Fan Hongjiao shaking violently.

Although Wang Yue was the least experienced among the four, he had been at Yunfu Peak for several years, descending into the Dark Forest countless times. He fully understood the implications of such violent shaking.

The intensity of shaking indicated Duan Rong was descending at an almost extreme speed.

Fan Hongjiao glanced at the chain and laughed, "See? What did I say? Don’t deny it, Wang Yue, you’re just a coward! Little Junior Brother is nothing like you."

Wang Yue’s face flushed red, but he couldn’t find words to retort.

As Duan Rong continued to fall, he suddenly sensed the wind brushing past his cheeks becoming slightly moist, distinctly different from the dry wind he felt earlier.

This change made Duan Rong’s heart race; could he be nearing the end?

He remembered Fan Hongjiao’s advice to keep sliding down until his feet touched the ground.

Grasping the chain, he hung himself, peering down again, where he seemed to spot a faint glow in the infinite darkness.

An overwhelming sense of joy filled his heart.

Although the glow seemed far, he could faintly perceive it.

An elation filled his being, his hands releasing as he allowed himself to fall...

Repeatedly, with time passing by, Duan Rong felt the wind on his face grow humid, replacing the dry air with a gentle touch, carrying a peculiar scent.

A unique fragrance, neither pleasant nor unpleasant, yet one he had never encountered.

Duan Rong glanced down at the distant glow again.

It now appeared closer, like a vast galaxy at the darkness’s edge.

Duan Rong suddenly let go, his body descending swiftly, as breathing became arduous, yet he maintained his form and began channeling his Cultivation Technique, holding his breath as he continued to descend.

Accelerating rapidly, his clothes flapping as though tearing apart, the once gentle humid wind now slicing painfully against his face.

Still holding his breath, Duan Rong continued to fall.

Hundreds of meters below lay the glow, and Duan Rong now descended swiftly, a mere blur, the wind roaring intensively past his ears.

In a meteoric impact-like descent, Duan Rong plunged into the glowing galaxy.

Just before hitting the ground, Duan Rong suddenly leapt, crouching mid-air with his knees and head wrapped, his Dantian’s Primordial Qi momentarily surging out like a thin film enveloping his body.

"Boom!"

With a tremendous crash, a black sphere smashed into the ground near the stone wall, scattering grass and dust everywhere.

Fan Hongjiao, Wu Shidao, Lu Geng, and Wang Yue were all shocked!

Amidst flying grass and dust, a figure leapt out—it was Duan Rong, last to arrive.

With a smile, Duan Rong faced them, seeing the dispersing grass and dust leaving a considerable crater below, evidently from his impact.

The four stared at Duan Rong in awe, while he cupped his hands, smiling, "Senior Sister Fan, and fellow Senior Brothers! Sorry to keep you waiting, Duan Rong is late!"
